November Forecast: Warm and Dry

A WARM PATTERN OVERALL

The near-record El Nino is still going strong in the Tropical Pacific. Ocean temperatures are WAAAY above “normal” over thousands of miles.

There is also a huge area of warm ocean off the West Coast of the U.S. Patterns like this usually lead to North America getting flooded with warm air. Weather patterns tend to move west to east. So, there’s just too much warmth in the Pacific for us to be unaffected by it.

WARM UPPER-AIR PATTERN, TOO

Of course, if the weather pattern is right, that warmth could be blocked by a particular upper-air pattern. That’s just not happening this November. In fact, the winds in the upper atmosphere would favor warm weather here no matter what was going on in the Pacific. Here is the predicted map for Nov. 11.

These show wind patterns about 18,000 feet up. The closer the lines are together, the stronger the wind. And the wind blows along those lines. For example, look at the line that goes through Philadelphia and trace it westward. It’s coming from Northern Mexico! Trace it back some more and you can see that it’s coming from the Pacific Ocean. That’s where all that warmth is. A pattern like this in an El Nino year is sure to bring warm air this way. It won’t be warm every day, of course, but unless this pattern changes dramatically, there will be a lot more warm days than cool ones.

THE NOVEMBER OUTLOOK

The overall outlook is WARM and DRY. I expect temperatures to average 4 to 6 degrees above “normal” (or long-term average). As for precipitation, let’s say ½ to 1 inch below normal. And, oh yes, no measurable snow.

THE GRAPHICS

Here is the graphic we used on NBC10 showing how dramatically the weather changes in an average November. We start the month with highs near 60 and end it near 50 degrees. And the sun rises about ½ hour later, while the sun sets 22 minutes sooner. We lose a LOT of daylight!

And here’s the graphic we used showing a calendar of above and below normal temperatures. Overall, it’s a very mild pattern, with a cold front about once a week that drops temperatures-briefly.

Still working on my entire winter forecast, which will be out before the middle of the month. New data is being found each day. The near-record El Nino is an important factor, but not the only one.

Woman Pays for Trip With Dead Victim's Money: Police

A nursing home worker was arrested after she allegedly stole from elderly residents and even used it to fund a vacation after one of the victims died, according to police.

Syreeta Nicole Jones, 30, of Philadelphia, was arrested and charged with identity theft, forgery, securing a document by deception and other related offenses.

The investigation began May 27 when police responded to the Elm Terrace Gardens nursing home in Lansdale, Pennsylvania, for a report of a theft. Police discovered someone had stolen a personal check from a resident, who became aware upon receiving a call from the depositing bank, police said.

The stolen check was written in the amount of $2,450 and made payable to 39-year-old Eugene Hudnell, of Philadelphia, who police later discovered Hudnell was an associate of Jones. Police also said Jones, who worked as a certified nursing assistant at the home, had access to the victim’s room.

Police linked Jones to the theft of another nursing home resident, who died in September. On Oct. 19, the second victim's estate contacted Lansdale police and reported four suspicious transactions made to the victim’s credit card after he or she passed away. Police said Jones had access to this victim's room as well.

Investigators determined two purchases were made to a wireless phone company under Jones’ cellphone account. Another transaction was made to a ticket agency for a vacation to Florida, booked to Jones and a male companion, according to police.

The total amount charged to the second victim’s credit card was more than $1,500, police said.

Police obtained an arrest warrant for Jones in October and arrested her Sunday when she arrived at Philadelphia International Airport following her Florida vacation. She was housed at the Montgomery County Correctional Facility after failing to post $50,000 bail and is scheduled for a preliminary hearing on Nov. 13. Court records don't list an attorney for Jones.

Police continue to search for Hudnell, who faces forgery, identity theft and securing document by deception charges.

Loved Ones Remember Slain Philly Teen

Loved ones gathered to remember a 16-year-old boy who died after two men fired more than a dozen shots at him and his friend as they rode their bicycles down a North Philadelphia street.

A vigil was held for Saleem West between North Marston Street and West Susquehanna Avenue Monday night. Friends and family held balloons and flowers in honor of the teen boy described as a good kid who loved basketball.

"Oh my God it hurts so bad," said Taryn Perkins, a family friend. "He's so young at 16. He's not a bad kid. He wasn't."

West and his 15-year-old friend were riding down the 2200 block of West Sedgley Avenue around 4:45 p.m. Sunday when they came upon four men sitting in a parked silver Buick with tinted windows.

Capt. Nicholas Brown of the 22nd District said the boys had an interaction with the men earlier in the afternoon and when they realized the same car was in their path, they tried to turn around. Just then, Brown said, two men jumped out of the Buick, began chasing them and opened fire.

The men unloaded 17 shots at the boys, according to Brown. One bullet hit Saleem in the back. He was rushed to Temple University Hospital where he died a short time later.

The men fled the scene and are still on the loose. The surviving teen told police he had never seen them before Sunday. Both boys grew up together in the neighborhood, Brown said.

A motive has yet to be determined, but Brown said investigators haven't ruled out road rage.

"That is an awful lot of shots to fire at two kids, especially if this was possibly road rage," he said.

Pastor Elbert Jordan was inside his nearby church with congregants when the shooting happened. He said violence in the neighborhood has gotten worse recently. Police stats show there have been more than two dozen shootings in the neighborhood over the past few weeks.

Jordan also said he wouldn't be surprised if road rage was at play.

"When people see straight road, they just ride like they're crazy so there is a lot of road rage, there is a lot of that down here," he said.

A $20,000 reward is being offered for information leading to an arrest. If you have any information please call Philadelphia Police.

Philadelphia Police found the 21-year-old man suffering from a gunshot wound to the chest lying on a lawn about 50-feet away from the front door of his home at the Korman Rushwood Apartments on Keswick Road around 8:30 Monday night.

"(Witnesses) saw two people flee from the scene of the shooting," said Philadelphia Police Chief Inspector Scott Small.

Witnesses told police they saw a slim man in a white shirt, standing around 5-foot, 6-inches tall; and a woman wearing a black shirt and blue jeans running away from the scene. No one heard an argument before the shooting, said police.

Concerns Over Placement of Electronics in Certain BMWs

$

Drivers, lawsuits and three independent mechanics say a problem with the placement of electronics in certain BMW models could jeopardize driver safety.

Complaints point to the trunk where some BMW model’s place the car’s electronics. Complaints filed with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) and lawsuits filed in New York and California assert water can leak into the trunk causing smoke, fire or electrical failure.

In court filings BMW denies there is a defect or that the alleged defect is a safety hazard.
“We cannot comment on active litigation,” BMW of North America spokesman Kenn Sparks said in an email to the NBC 10 Investigators.

Federal lawsuits name BMW X5’s, X3’s and 5 Series sold between 1999 and 2010 as the class vehicles.
“The vehicles become inoperable and pose a serious safety risk,” according to court filings.

“NHTSA is aware of consumer complaints related to the issue you’ve described,” the government agency behind vehicle recalls said in a statement. “While we cannot comment on matters that the agency may consider as potential subjects for investigation, we carefully monitor consumer complaints and other sources of data to identify potential defect trends and take action if appropriate in carrying out our mission to protect the traveling public.”

There have not been any documented deaths of injuries directly tied to this alleged problem.

Sylvester Stallone is returning to the Philadelphia steps he made legendary to promote his upcoming installment of the "Rocky" franchise.

Friday morning’s news conference at 11 on top of the iconic Philadelphia Art Museum steps will echoed the scene from Rocky III where the “Rocky” statue in Stallone’s likeness was unveiled. Organizers didn’t mention any appearance by Mr. T this time around.

Joining Stallone at Friday’s event promoting Creed will be co-stars Michael B. Jordan and Tessa Thompson as well as writer/director Ryan Coogler, producer Irwin Winkler and Philadelphia Mayor Michael Nutter.

Stallone’s character of Rocky put the steps on the map in 1976 when he climbed the steps during his iconic training montage in the Academy Award-winning Rocky. The steps have played a role in "Rocky" lore and Philadelphia tourism ever since. A Rocky statue evens sits to the side of the steps where tourists like to take photos with it.

Creed -- the seventh installment of the "Rocky" franchise -- comes out the day before Thanksgiving.
