A night of fun and dancing raised more than $150,000 for The Comprehensive Sickle Cell Center at The Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia.

The 15th annual “Blue Tag Gala” raised more than $150,000 to support patient care and cutting-edge research at CHOP’s Comprehensive Sickle Cell Center.

The event, which was held on October 17 at the Hyatt at the Bellevue, featured dinner and dancing and more than 60 silent auction items. NBC10’s Jacqueline London was the emcee for the Gala.

“The Comprehensive Sickle Cell Center at CHOP is one of the most advanced care and research centers for sickle cell disease in the nation,” said Madeline Bell, president and CEO at The Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia. “Since 2000, the Blue Tag Gala has raised more than $1 million to fund groundbreaking research and clinical support for children diagnosed with the disease. Today, we thank the hundreds who attended this year’s event and helped to make it a resounding success.”

Sickle cell disease is one of the most common hereditary blood disorders in the U.S. The disease is characterized by chronic anemia, pain and complications that can lead to stroke and organ damage.

The Blue Tag Gala is the largest recurring fundraiser for The Comprehensive Sickle Cell Center at CHOP. With sufficient philanthropic support, CHOP is just two years away from the first clinical trial of in utero stem cell transplantation, which would revolutionize treatment for sickle cell disease and other immunodeficiency disorders.

Happy Ending for Homeless Family

A Philadelphia homeless family who inspired a community to give back is one step closer to having a permanent roof over their heads.

On Friday, keys to a three-bedroom home were presented to Michael Jones and his fiancée Angelique.

Their story began October 16 when their two-year-old son Jeremiah was found wandering barefoot in LOVE Park.

Shortly after Jeremiah was found, his parents called police to report that he was missing, investigators said. The parents said they had been kicked out of a home where they were staying and spent the night sleeping in a cardboard box near LOVE Park's visitor's center.

"That night, we couldn't find nobody to take the kids, so I had to improvise," Jones said.

Jeremiah wandered off after his parents fell asleep and they were still sleeping when the child was found, police said.

Jeremiah, as well as his four-year-old sister, were both placed in DHS custody.

After hearing about their story, Chosen 300, an inter-denominational ministry which has distributed more than 150,000 meals a year to the homeless in Center City, West Philadelphia and Pottstown, stepped in to help the family. They were able to raise $12,000.

The funds will be used to pay rent and utilities for the family for one year.

On Friday night, Brian Jenkins, executive director of Chosen 300, presented the keys to Jones and his fiancée. In addition, students at The Mathematics, Civics & Sciences Charter School raised $1,000 for the family that will be used to buy appliances.

The family is expected to move into their new home sometime this coming week.

On Tuesday, a judge granted the boy’s parents visitation rights. Jenkins said the staff of Chosen 300 will be working with the couple to establish an effective case management plan that includes family restoration.

Groups Honor Babies Killed by Abortion Doctor

Pro-life advocates gathered in Philadelphia Saturday to honor the newborn babies who were killed by a convicted abortion doctor in a case that garnered national attention.

A memorial service was held at the Laurel Hill Cemetery on Ridge Avenue where the newborn victims of convicted abortion doctor Kermit Gosnell were buried. The groups, which included the Pro-Life Leadership Coalition, conducted a religious service at the cemetery.

In May, 2013 Gosnell was convicted of first-degree murder in the deaths of three babies who police said were born alive before having their necks cut with scissors. Gosnell was also found guilty of involuntary manslaughter in the overdose death of a 41-year-old woman who was a former patient.

Prosecutors said Gosnell delivered the babies alive at his West Philadelphia clinic during abortion procedures and then killed them by snipping their spinal cords with scissors. His former patient, Karnamaya Mongar, died in 2009 after she was given a lethal dose of pain killers and anesthesia during an abortion procedure.

The investigation against Gosnell began in 2010 after FBI and DEA agents raided his clinic on 3801 Lancaster Avenue following a tip that a prescription pill mill was operating inside.

When they arrived, officials say they found blood-stained rooms, filthy and old equipment and untrained staff members. Aborted fetuses were stored in a basement freezer in plastic food containers and bags next to employee lunches. Severed feet from aborted babies were found preserved in jars around the clinic. Philadelphia district Attorney Seth Williams referred to the clinic as a “house of horrors” in a 2011 grand jury report.

Gosnell is currently serving a life sentence for the deaths of the three babies and Mongar. He is also serving an additional 30 years for trafficking narcotics out of his clinic, which is now closed.

Nearly eight years after his murder, police continue to search for a group of men who beat a New Jersey college student to death.

On October 27, 2007, four to five men attacked Donald Farrell III, a 19-year-old sophomore and lacrosse player at Rowan University, during the school’s homecoming weekend.

[[300603281, C]]

The group approached Farrell near the Triad apartments at the school’s Glassboro, New Jersey, campus and began to punch and kick him. While police initially believed robbery was the motive, they now suspect it was a random attack. Farrell died the day after the assault from a ruptured artery in his neck.

Police said one of the suspects in the attack was captured on surveillance video from a nearby Glassboro convenience store wearing a red-and-gray Coogie hooded sweatshirt and a Yankees baseball cap. The hoodie is in limited production and sold in North Jersey and New York retailers. Rowan’s opponent during the 2007 homecoming football game was Montclair State University, which is located in North Jersey.

Police also said the suspect went by the nickname "Smoke." At the time of the murder, he was described as a 5-foot-7 black male between the ages of 20 and 24 with medium complexion, rounded facial features, braided hair, thin mustache and light goatee.

Police are still offering a $100,000 reward to anyone with information leading to an arrest and conviction in Farrell’s death.

In 2011, students in an investigative journalism class at Rowan University spent a semester studying the case, researching interviews and documents. Their findings were compiled in the Donnie Project, a website with extensive information on Farrell's murder.
