9mm Bullets Found in Philly Elementary School

An elementary school student found nearly 3 dozen bullets on the floor of her West Philadelphia classroom.

Nearly a week later, police don't know who they belong to or how they got there.

The 5th grader found the bag of 9mm bullets on the floor of her classroom at James Rhoads Elementary school at 50th and Parrish streets on Oct. 13, according to a spokeswoman for the school district.

After seeing what was in the bag, the student told her teacher and the school then notified police.

"It's scary. It's scary," said Crysta Reese whose daughter is a 5th grader at the school. "Wherever those bullets are coming from, it makes you wonder if there's a gun. You just don't know."

A spokesman told NBC10 students have brought guns and other dangerous items to the school in the past. While police are investigating the latest incident, school administrators are asking parents to have conversations with their children about gun safety.

"Where there is a bullet there's a gun," said Philadelphia School District spokesman Fernando Gallard. "So when bullets are easy to access, there might be a gun that is easy to access."

Delco Boys' Good Deed Helps Neighbor in Need

A good deed by a group of kids in Delaware County over the weekend didn't go unnoticed, and praise for the boys is spreading on social media.

On Sunday, five boys from Ridley Park decided to take it upon themselves to clean up an elderly neighbor's yard.

Brothers Andrew and Matthew Connolly joined Declan and Aiden Kiely and friend John Hosbach on Sunday afternoon, picking up their rakes and getting to work clearing fallen leaves from the man's front yard. Joe Connolly, father to two of the boys, said the man whose yard they raked, whom he estimated to be about 90, is "like another grandfather" to kids in the neighborhood. He recently suffered an injury during a fall and has been in a rehab facility for some time, Joe said.

"It was really kind of cool as a parent to see it," Joe said. "I asked my son, 'What made you do that?' He said, 'He couldn't do it himself.'"

Andrew and Matthew are 11 and 8, respectively; Declan and Aiden are 9 and 7, and John is 11. Joe said he and other parents were proud to watch the boys come together to help the neighbor, who also recently lost his wife.

Joe's wife, Fran, snapped a photo of the boys and Joe shared it on Facebook. By Monday, the photo was picked up by the Ridley Good News Campaign page and garnered more than 400 "likes" and dozens of comments.

"It was an absolutely amazing feeling to know that your kids are actually doing the right thing without being prompted," Joe Connolly said. He said his kids play sports, but their achievements in those -- although proud moments -- were nothing like seeing them care for their neighbor.

"This tops it all," the father said.

Man Pleads Guilty to Rapes that Terrorized Neighborhood

A man pleaded guilty on Monday to attacking and raping four young girls between the ages of 12 and 17 in a Philadelphia neighborhood in 2013, the Philadelphia District Attorney's Office announced.

Antuane Brown, 25, pleaded no contest to the four brutal rapes, which happened in the city's Germantown section over the course of about three months.

In the first attack, which happened March 19, 2013, prosecutors said Brown donned a mask and snatched a 12-year-old girl as she waited for a bus to school in the morning on Price Street, according to the DA's Office. He then forced the girl into an alley, where he raped and sodomized her before stealing her school ID and threatening to kill her family if she called the police.

Several weeks later, Brown struck again, the DA's office said, accosting a 17-year-old girl on Chelten Avenue the night of April 23, 2013. He forced the teen into an alley at gunpoint, raped and sodomized her, and threatened to kill her, according to the DA's office. He stole her ID card as well, officials said.

On May 19, 2013, in the third attack, according to the DA's office, Brown rode a bicycle up to a 15-year-old girl on Wister Street at night and forced her into an alley at gunpoint, then raped her.

Less than a month after that, on June 2, 2013, prosecutors say he struck again, attacking a 17-year-old girl on Chelten Avenue, shoving a gun into her stomach and forcing her into a field behind a rec center. He raped and sodomized that victim as well, authorities said, and threatened to killer her if she told the police.

All four victims reported their assaults to the police, who later found surveillance video showing the May attack and released it to the public. Numerous tips eventually led investigators to Brown on June 5, 2013, and he was arrested a linked by DNA to the crimes, prosecutors said. All four of the rapes were committed within a half-mile of Brown's home, prosecutors said.

"These four young girls and their families have gone through unimaginable pain and suffering because of what Antuane Brown did to them, and today’s plea of no contest makes sure he is punished for his crimes,” said Philadelphia District Attorney Seth Williams. “I’d like to thank the brave young women and their families for their help in building this case, the public who offered their tips and the Philadelphia Police Department for working with my office to find, arrest and prosecute the defendant."

Brown faces a maximum potential sentence of 320 years in prison at his Feb. 12 sentencing.

Giants Jersey Placed on Rocky Statue

Both Eagles and Giants fans have always been known for their trash talk, especially before matchups between the NFC East rivals. The day before the Monday night football game between the two teams, a few fans decided to continue that tradition by placing a jersey on the statue of a Philly icon – a fictional icon, but an icon nonetheless.

Several photos of a blue Giants jersey on the Rocky statue at the Philadelphia Museum of Art made the rounds on social media Monday.

The number 5 jersey is that of former Giants punter Steve Weatherford, who was released by the team in September. Perhaps eager to be back in the spotlight for a brief moment, Weatherford reposted the photo on his Instagram page.

While Weatherford insisted he wasn’t the one who put up the jersey, he engaged in some trash talking of his own on Twitter after he caught the wrath of some Eagles fans.

Off-Duty EMT Provides CPR to Woman in Cardiac Arrest

Pure chance saved the life of a 69-year-old woman when she went into cardiac arrest while driving outside Deer Park Tavern in Newark, Delaware Wednesday. As luck would have it, off-duty EMT David Baquet had just stopped inside the restaurant for a late lunch in between classes.

The woman went into cardiac arrest and became unresponsive while driving down Main Street with her husband. When restaurant-goers were asked by a Deer Park employee if they knew CPR, Baquet stepped up and helped the woman out of her car before starting CPR.

"It all happened really quickly and I didn't realize how shocked I was till I stood up and saw everyone that had responded to the scene," Baquet told NBC10.

The patient regained a pulse and was transported to the emergency room in serious, but stable condition.

“The Chain of Survival begins with the bystander recognizing that a patient has gone into cardiac arrest,” Abigail Haas, a spokeswoman for New Castle County paramedics told the Newark Post. “That first link of the chain is vitally important to the patient surviving a cardiac arrest, as they are the person that first recognizes the patient’s heart has stopped, first calls for help and initiates chest compressions. Bystander CPR buys the patient time.”

Baquet just started his second year with the University of Delaware Emergency Care Unit (UDECU), which consists of about 50 student volunteers. Every volunteer receives in-depth, high quality EMT training from outside agencies like Delaware State Fire School, according to the UDECU website.

"I couldn't be more thankful to have had the amazing support and training from the members in these organizations," Baquet said, adding he hopes the victim has a quick recovery.  "Hopefully I'll get to meet her one day under better circumstances."

Videos of Homecoming King & Queen Go Viral

Taylor Dunn couldn’t hold back the tears Friday night when she heard Nick McGee’s name.

“I cried,” the senior at Central Bucks High School South told NBC10. “I couldn’t stop crying. I think everyone on the field was crying.”

Dunn was standing next to her childhood friend Nick McGee, 18, after escorting him to the field during a football game at Central Bucks in Warrington Friday night. Nick, along with Lily Bowman, were among the nominees for the school's homecoming king and queen. The teens, who both have down syndrome, are popular students at the school who have received a great deal of support from classmates and staff. Despite this, Nick wasn't sure if he would win.

“I was real nervous and excited though,” Nick told NBC10.

Nick’s sister Lauren recorded as the winners were announced. The speaker then called out Lily and Nicks’ names. In a moment of pure joy, Nick raised his hands in victory, raced to the stands and jumped up and down as cheers erupted from the crowd.

“He won and he ran right over to the stands,” said Nick’s mom Kim McGee. “He loved the cheering section because he’s always part of them every week so he ran right over to them. It was very exciting and everybody was in tears.”

Kim remembers the first thing Nick said to her after he won.

“I’m King mom!”

The clip of Nick’s reaction quickly went viral after it was posted on social media over the weekend. Another video showed Lily hugging fellow student Kyle Monsalud, who escorted her to the field, after her name was called.

The newly crowned king and queen attended the homecoming dance Saturday. Nick's classmates cheered as he danced to his favorite song, "Gangam Style."

“My song is Gangam Style that I dance to a lot,” Nick said. “The cheer was, ‘we will win.’ I always do it every single football game I ever went to.”

Kim told NBC10 she’s touched not only by how popular the video of her son winning has become but also the amazing support he’s received from his classmates and community.

“Just everyone was reaching out, excited,” Kim said. “It just shows how great a community we live in. Nick’s been part of the school since kindergarten so it’s been awesome to see how they responded.”

Kim also praised Taylor for the continued support she’s given Nick.

“Taylor is amazing,” Kim said. “She just represents her class and exactly how they feel. Nick ran for president of the school and she was his campaign manager. They’ve been friends since kindergarten.”

Taylor, who is also on the homecoming court, is proud of her longtime friend for his latest accomplishment.

“It was not a surprise at all,” she said. “Nick is one of the leaders of our student section. Everyone loves him. Lily is the same way. They just always put a smile on other students’ faces. They’re friends with everyone so it was not a surprise that they won.”

Nick thanked all his friends and supporters. He also talked about his dream of working with the Philadelphia Phillies after he graduates, having worked with the team in the past.

“I also dance at the Phillies games at the dugout,” he said. “My idol is Ryan Howard. I met him too. He told me, ‘Keep rocking it Mr. King!’”

Doctor Died of Cocaine, Alcohol Intoxication: M.E.

The 38-year-old Long Island doctor found in the vestibule of a Manhattan apartment building earlier this month died accidentally from acute cocaine and alcohol intoxication, the medical examiner's office has ruled.

The finding confirms what investigators suspected after Dr. Kiersten Cerveny was found dead on Oct. 5. Law enforcement sources told NBC 4 New York the day after her death that she had been using cocaine inside an apartment there with a boyfriend and another man before they left her in a lobby to be picked up by EMS.

Law enforcement sources said that Cerveny became ill after consuming cocaine inside an apartment of a five-story walk-up building on West 16th Street. The two men she was with tried to carry her to a cab downstairs, but she collapsed, the sources said.

The men called 911, and when EMS arrived, the man believed to be her boyfriend fled back upstairs, the sources said.

Emergency medical technicians attempted to resuscitate Cerveny, a married mother of three who lived in Manhasset, as they loaded her into the ambulance and took her to the Lenox Health emergency room in Greenwich Village. She died at the hospital.

Investigators initially said they were looking for an unidentified man who was thought to have spotted the unconscious Cerveny in the vestibule and flagged down an ambulance before fleeing. Police said Monday the man now believed to be Cerveny's boyfriend was questioned, but neither he nor the other man is expected to face charges.

Cerveny's father told the Daily News that she had told her husband she was headed out from their home in Manhasset to spend the night in the city with a friend.

Cerveny had been drinking at a Lower East Side nightspot before arriving by cab with a man at the apartment building around 4:30 a.m. Sunday, police said. Investigators recovered security video that showed the man and another person carrying her into the entryway about four hours later.

Cerveny, who was originally from Washington Township in Gloucester County, New Jersey, had been an assistant professor of clinical dermatology at Weill Cornell Medical College, according to a Dec. 12, 2009, announcement of her marriage to Andrew Cerveny Jr., also a dermatologist, in The New York Times. She graduated magna cum laude from Duke University and earned her medical degree at Tulane University.

She met her husband in 2004 while both were residents at the Medical Center of Louisiana at New Orleans.

"It's just mind-boggling,'' said Thomas Nicotri, one of Cerveny's professors during her residency in New Orleans and who had seen her and her husband at dinner two months ago. "They looked healthy and happy. It seemed like they were on top of the world. They had everything.''

Cerveny's achievements included winning the 1995 America's Junior Miss competition as a teenager from Blackwood, New Jersey. The prize was a $30,000 scholarship she used to attend Duke.

Cerveny's work as a doctor also drew praise on the social media app Yelp. Posts there called her "a beautiful soul," "friendly, helpful, awesome" and a "doctor with a great bedside manner, very kind and encouraging."

Man Knocks Woman Unconscious at Park: Police

A man was arrested after police say he was caught on video knocking a woman unconscious at a crowded park in Atlantic City over the weekend.

Police say Iben Hunter, 25, of Atlantic City, assaulted a 44-year-old woman at Brown Park on Martin Luther King Boulevard and Baltic Avenue Saturday. A video, which was posted on Facebook, shows Hunter standing in front of the 44-year-old woman who is sitting down, police said. Hunter then punches the woman in the face, knocking her unconscious, according to investigators.

The woman was taken to the hospital where she is currently in critical condition. While she was conscious, police say she was unable to complete a full interview with investigators. Police also say the Facebook video of the incident aided them in their investigation.

Hunter was arrested Monday and charged with aggravated assault. He was remanded to the Atlantic County Justice Facility on $100,000 bail.

Eagles Defeat Giants in Monday Night Matchup

$
0
0

Two weeks ago, the Eagles were a total disaster. Two weeks ago, fans were calling for Chip Kelly’s head. Two weeks ago, the Eagles’ season looked like it was over.

Now, they’re in first place.

The Eagles crushed the injury-plagued Giants, 27-7, at Lincoln Financial Field on Monday Night Football.

With the win, the Eagles improved their record to 3-3 and overtook first place in the NFC East. Although the Giants are also 3-3, the win on Monday night gave the Eagles the advantage in head-to-head play.

The Eagles’ offense again got off to a slow start but eventually got on the board in the first half to tie the game at 7-7. Nolan Carroll’s pick-six gave the Eagles a 14-7 lead and they never trailed again.

The Giants’ touchdown on their first drive of the game ended up being their only points on the night. The Eagles' defense settled in to have a fantastic game.

The Eagles outgained the Giants 425-251 on the night.

Turning point
The Giants were up 7-0 in the first quarter and were driving to take a two-score lead. That’s when Eli Manning tried to pass the ball to tight end Larry Donnell and Eagles linebacker DeMeco Ryans simply ripped it away from him for the interception.

The play came at a point when the Eagles just couldn’t stop the Giants and turned the tide. The Eagles scored to tie the game at 7-7 on the ensuing possession.

Key stat
The Eagles forced three turnovers for the third time this season after having four such games all of last season. They haven’t lost a three-takeaway game since 2010, now 18 straight games.

Offensive stud
DeMarco Murray really got it going on a third-quarter scoring drive, when he carried the ball five times for 41 yards and capped the drive with a 12-yard touchdown that put the Eagles up 24-7. He finished with over 100 yards for the first time as an Eagle.

Riley Cooper wasn’t catching the ball all over the field but he continues to somehow be a deep threat. He caught a couple of long balls, including a 32-yard touchdown pass in the first half.

Offensive dud
Sam Bradford did enough for the Eagles to get a win but wasn’t very sharp against a porous Giants pass defense. He threw three interceptions. It was his first three-interception game since his first NFL start — Sept. 12, 2010.

Defensive stud
Ryans had a really strong first half. He not only had the game-changing interception but he also recovered a fumble after Malcolm Jenkins forced the ball to pop out.

Carroll’s first-half pick-six was the first of his career and was his first interception since 2013. That gave the Eagles a 14-7 lead.

The Eagles’ defensive line as a whole was unstoppable for the Giants’ offensive line on Monday night. Manning, who has been getting the ball out very quickly this season, was sacked four times.

Defensive dud

Hard to find one for the Eagles. They played a really solid game after the first Giants drive went for a touchdown.

Injuries
Ryans hurt his hamstring in the first half and did not return. Wideouts Cooper and Josh Huff got hurt early in the third quarter but both returned. Darren Sproles left the game in the third quarter to be evaluated for a head injury but returned.

Up next
The Eagles are back on the road next week to take on the undefeated Panthers (5-0) in Carolina on Sunday night. The bye week follows before the Eagles have another Sunday Night Football game, this time in Dallas.

Next week, the Giants host the Cowboys for a 4:25 p.m. kickoff on Sunday afternoon before traveling to face the Saints the following week.

Someone shot a man in the head along a Philadelphia street overnight.

Doctors pronounced the unidentified 28-year-old man dead after police rushed him to Einstein Medical Center after they found the man on the 6700 block of N 11th Street in East Oak Lane just after 2:30 a.m. Tuesday.

Besides being shot in the head, the man was also shot at least multiple times in the torso, said Philadelphia Police Chief Inspector Scott Small.

Police believe the shooter was very close to the victim when he pulled the trigger.

"We found five spent shell casings all within inches of where the victim's body was found on the street," said Small.

No word yet on possible suspects in the case, which Small said happened in a quiet neighborhood.

Victim Recounts Harrowing Home Invasion

Three victims terrorized in a violent overnight home invasion in Philadelphia struggled to make sense of why they were targeted Tuesday as police continued to search for a second masked attacker in the crime.

Two of the victims, a couple, spoke with NBC10's Katy Zachry after leaving the hospital following their ordeal.

Police said two masked men armed with a hammer and a knife burst into the home near F Street and Allegheny Avenue in Kensington shortly after 2 a.m. and awoke the couple and a female friend staying at the house. They tied up the friend and the man in the house and forced the other woman to drive them to an ATM, where she withdrew the $100 she had for them.

"I'm scared," the woman forced to the ATM said. "They told us that they were gonna kill us after they got what they wanted."

The man suffered stab wounds to his hands trying to fight the men off.

"He got stabbed in the hands a little bit, a lot of blood," the woman said.

She said she does not know why she, her boyfriend and her friend were targeted.

While the attackers forced her to the ATM, the other woman escaped from the chair she was tied to and began banging on houses on the block screaming for help, the victim recounted.

"She ran down the street. She was banging on everybody's doors," the woman said.

When police arrived, they spotted the two suspects struggling with the victim on the street. They were able to chase down one man, who was armed with a hammer, but said the second got away.

The man arrested is 28 and from Philadelphia, police said. They are still searching for the second attacker and investigating to determine why the robbers chose that home.

Tipsters should contact East Detectives at 215-686-3243 or the police tip line at 215-686-8477, or text a tip to PPD TIP (773847).

Cosby's Face Covered on D.C. Mural

$

0

Someone defaced a famous D.C. mural of Bill Cosby, replacing the comedian’s face with that of North Korean leader Kim Jong Un -- but the defacement didn't last long.

The mural at Ben’s Chili Bowl's flagship location on U Street NW shows Cosby and President Barack Obama, two people permitted to eat there for free, the restaurant boasts, as well as other D.C. legends musician Chuck Brown and radio host Donnie Simpson. The news that Kim's face was placed over Cosby's was first reported by the news website Borderstan.

Street artist Smearleader took credit for the defacement on Instagram, writing, "Instead of looking at a sexual predator, people can celebrate in jubilation that the great leader is now on the their Wall."

"What I would like for people to take away from this particular event is that it is an embarrassment to residents of D.C. old and new that [Cosby's] face is still up on the wall mural," Smearleader told News4.

Shortly before 5 p.m. Monday, Kevin Irvine, who said he was friends with the mural artist went to the scene and removed the label of Kim's face, restoring the mural to display Cosby again, News4's Shomari Stone reported.

When asked what he would tell someone who'd say that Cosby doesn't belong on the mural, the man responded, "Oh, that's impossible. Anybody who would say that is just insane. Regardless of Bill's -- I'm not sure what he did -- but he's a very respected man."

Ben's had declined to take the mural down after dozens of women came forward with accusations Cosby drugged them and sexually assaulted them.

The comedian, who has never been charged with a crime, is a longtime supporter of the restaurant and appeared at the opening of its Arlington location in March 2014.

"You've seen Bill Cosby wherever we stood," owner Vida Ali told News4 last year. "He's been a big supporter of us for a long time. He's been a family friend, and that's still the case."

Asked what the biggest issue with Cosby is, Smearleader told News4, "'The Cosby Show' is debatable, but definitely the drugging and sexually taking advantage of women."

Smearleader is known for putting stickers of the North Korean leader on street signs. The street artist told News4 that he ate at Ben's about 10 years ago.

"Employees were nice and courteous, so this isn't a knock on them," Smearleader told News4. "They're just trying to do their job."
