14-Year-Old Boy Shot in the Head

UPDATE: The teen died from his injuries Tuesday. NEW DETAILS HERE

A 14-year-old boy is fighting for his life after he was shot in the head in North Philadelphia Monday night.

The teen was in front of the Philadelphia Housing Authority police building, which was empty at the time, on the 1200 block of 10th Street at 8:40 p.m., when an unidentified gunman opened fire. The teen was struck once in the head. He was taken to Hahnemann University Hospital where he is currently in extremely critical condition.

"Presently he's inside the emergency room being worked on by doctors," said Philadelphia Police Chief Inspector Scott Small. "He's got a gunshot wound to his forehead and he's never regained consciousness. He is in very critical condition. It's unknown whether or not he's going to survive."

Police told NBC10 a BB gun that looked like a handgun fell out of the teen's clothes when he arrived at the hospital. They don't believe the BB gun was the weapon that wounded him however and instead suspect the teen was shot by a revolver. They continue to search for the weapon.

No arrests have been made and investigators say there were no witnesses. Police are currently reviewing surveillance video from a few blocks away.

Petition Calls for Removal of Philly Columbus Monuments

For some, Columbus Day is a time to celebrate their culture and heritage, while for others it’s simply a day off from work. Yet there is also a large number of people who don’t believe it’s a holiday worth celebrating at all. That group is speaking out through an online petition demanding that the city of Philadelphia take down a statue and monument honoring Christopher Columbus.

"It’s just beyond imagination that a human being could be so horrific and inhumane toward other people and then be celebrated," said Michael Coard, a local professor and activist.

Coard told NBC10 it’s unacceptable to celebrate Columbus knowing he played a role in wiping out indigenous people.

"We have this holiday, we have these resolutions, we have streets and monuments," Coard said. "It’s outrageous and must be changed."

The petition is a letter to Mayor Michael Nutter asking that he remove the Columbus obelisk located at the intersection of Columbus Boulevard and Dock Street, as well as a statue of Columbus located at Marconi Plaza at the intersection of Broad Street and Oregon Avenue.

"More and more people inside and outside of the Philadelphia area are recognizing that Christopher Columbus raped, enslaved, murdered and stole from countless indigenous peoples and ruined their lives," the petition says. "We should not be commemorating him or erasing all of what we now know to be historical atrocities with a monument that speaks so highly of him."

While the petition asks Nutter to take action, the Columbus monument is on property owned by the Delaware River Waterfront Corporation, which means the corporation would make any decision.

"Tell Mayor Nutter to contact the respective owners about this, because as a leader he can help Philly do better, and because it matters," the petition says.

Philadelphia’s Columbus Day Parade was once again well attended this year as crowds celebrated their Italian-American roots. Haider Khan, a tourist visiting from Pakistan, told NBC10 he doesn’t believe the statue or monument should be taken down.

"All these monuments are historical heritage and they should be preserved for the future generations," Khan said.

The petition had over 250 supporters as of 11 p.m. Monday.

Montco Battles Prescription Drug 'Epidemic'

Ahead of a drug take-back this weekend, families of loved ones lost to prescription drug abuse told their stories in Montgomery County Tuesday morning.

Families gathered at the East Norriton Police station to talk about the take-back program, which will include 10 MedReturn boxes sponsored by the Pennsylvania American Water Company and a large-scale take-back at numerous county locations on Saturday.

County District Attorney Risa Vetri Ferman and Commissioner Josh Shapiro also spoke at the event.

“Drug addiction and overdose is a comprehensive problem that demands a comprehensive response,” said Ferman.

Part of the prescriptions pill problem is that 27 percent of teenagers falsely believe that prescriptions are safer than street drugs leading to 3 million new teenage prescription drug abusers each year, said officials.

PAWC hopes to spread the take-back boxes statewide, putting in 250 total. the hope is that people who want to flush away medications will instead choose a drop-off box.

“Experience shows that the most effective and cost-efficient way to ensure high-quality water at the tap is to keep our source waters clean,” said PAWC President Kathy Pape. “We support this partnership because it helps spread an important message to the public: ‘Don’t flush medications down the toilet, where they would eventually end up in our waterways.’"

County officials also lauded its Nalaxone (aka Narcan) program that can be used to reverse a drug overdose. About 330 police cars in the county will now carry the antidote that has saved 16 lives since April.

In 2013, a national study revealed that Pennsylvania ranked 14th in the nation in overdose deaths, said the county. And, the majority of overdoses came from prescription drugs rather than heroin and cocaine.

Tracy Morgan Returns to Stand-Up

Tracy Morgan has made his return to stand-up comedy more than a year after he was seriously injured in a deadly bus crash.

Morgan, who suffered a traumatic brain injury that left him in a coma for eight days, performed two shows in Manhattan Monday night.

The 46-year-old comedian tweeted about his performance at Greenwich Village’s Comedy Cellar to his more than 3 million followers, saying he was “picking up the pieces.”

Fellow comedian Judah Friedlander, who appeared on NBC’s “30 Rock” with Morgan, was listed on the Comedy Cellar’s official bill, but he didn’t know about Morgan’s surprise appearance, according to Refinery 29.

Morgan also did a set at The Stand Comedy Club in the Gramercy area.

Morgan is still recovering from injuries sustained in the June 7, 2014 accident when a Wal-Mart truck on the New Jersey Turnpike slammed into the back of a limousine-bus carrying the former "30 Rock" star and others who were returning from a comedy show in Delaware. Morgan suffered a traumatic brain injury, a broken leg, and broken ribs in the crash.

Comedian James "Jimmy Mack" McNair of Peekskill, a mentor of Morgan's, was killed. Three other passengers in the limo suffered serious injuries.

The National Transportation Safety Board determined the truck driver, Kevin Roper, of Jonesboro, Georgia, had been awake for 28 hours before the crash. Roper faces several criminal charges, including death by auto, in state court. He has pleaded not guilty. He wasn't a defendant in Morgan's federal lawsuit.

Meanwhile, Walmart has settled a $10 million lawsuit with McNair’s children and has reached a confidential settlement with Morgan.

Morgan will make a televised comeback to “Saturday Night Live” as host this week.

According to The Reporter News, Christopher Orion Rhoads broke into the Trinity Lutheran Church on October 5 and vandalized property by smashing vases, ripping books and even spreading spaghetti sauce all over the floor and furniture.

The man allegedly stole a Duraflame-type log from a nearby Acme and used that to break glass to gain entry into the church.

The Reporter News reports that a subsequent search of Rhoads' house turned up a dark hooded sweatshirt that read “Bad Apple," which matched the description of the man in the church.

The Hamilton Animal Shelter will hold the grand opening of its new extension on Wednesday.

Township Mayor Kelly Yaede announced her plans for the extension in early 2014, saying that the extension would allow the facility to double its previous capacity for stray animals.

The expansion adds 16 more dog kennels and 25 more rooms for stray cats. The expansion also provided a larger medical area and quarantine areas, two new adoption rooms, and a grooming area, according to a press release.

Also according to the press release, the expansion was a “cost-effective” way to deal with stray animals, since it was $500,000 less than the cost of construction of a new facility.

Authorities say they're searching for the estranged boyfriend of a woman found killed alongside her 4-year-old son inside their Jersey City home last week.

The Hudson County prosecutor said 26-year-old Jose Ronald Santos-Alvarez, a restaurant worker, is a suspect in the homicides of Monika Potoczniak and their son Christopher.

They were found unconscious in their Lincoln Street home last Wednesday and transported to a local hospital, where they were pronounced dead. The mother had been strangled and the boy suffocated, the prosecutor's office said.

Neighbors were in shock after seeing police bring out the dead mother and son. One woman who lives across the street with her 14-year-old son said she hadn't been able to sleep "because it was so scary and disturbing."

An arrest warrant has been issued for Santos-Alvarez, who is charged with two counts of murder. Authorities said he should be considered dangerous and anyone who sees him should immediately contact police or the Hudson County prosecutor's office 201-915-1345.

Taran Killam recently took on the role of Trump on "SNL." Darrell Hammond, who serves as "Saturday Night Live's" announcer now, previously played Trump.

Where's 'The Money?' Gunmen Kill Philly Homeowner

0

A man was shot and killed despite his wife’s emotional plea during a home invasion in Philadelphia late Monday night.

The incident happened about 11:15 p.m. Monday inside a home in the 1100 block of S. Ruby Street in the city’s Kingsessing neighborhood.

Investigators say the three armed, masked suspects, possibly in their teens, entered the home through an unlocked door and confronted Tony Harris and his wife. The suspects led the female into the kitchen at gunpoint.

The gunmen demanded "the money" while putting guns to the head of both victims in the living room, said Philadelphia Police homicide Unit Capt. James Clark.

The female, according to police, told the suspects that the family was “poor” and didn’t have any money. A struggle ensued.

One gunman then shot 50-year-old Harris once in the head. He later died at Penn Presbyterian Medical Center.

After shooting the victim, the suspects ran out of the home. Originally it was reported that the left behind a rifle, but Clark later said no gun was left.

"We believe they're young, in the area of the 17 to 19 years of age range," said Clark.

The couple’s three young children - a 5-year-old, 2-year-old and 10-month-old -- were inside the home at the time, but they were not injured.

A short time later, police found an overturned Chevy Malibu at 51st and Locust Streets, which is a short distance from the home invasion scene. Investigators say a bloody handgun was found in the car, which was unoccupied. Investigators looked at the Malibu as possibly the getaway car used in the home invasion.

Clark didn't confirm if the car was involved.

It wasn't clear why the attackers thought there was a large sum of money in the home, said Clark.

"We don't believe they got away with anything," said Clark.

A Facebook post featuring the man's wife with a large sum of money could have been a motive for the incident but Clark said at this point it wasn't clear.

Clark also said that Harris' job as an personal electronic repairman could also have been motive but that nothing was definite.

Anyone with information is urged to contact police.

Dad Can't Pick Up Kids in Lawn Mower: School

A Pennsylvania dad is no longer allowed to use his lawn mower to pick his daughters up from school due to safety concerns from school officials.

Christopher Malloy of Montgomery County said he picked his daughter up from Fort Washington Elementary School in his lawn mower with a cart and wagon attached.

"He was very excited about it and he said most of the people there were really happy," said Christopher's wife, Melissa Malloy. "They thought it was really cute but there was one person who said, 'You have to go! This is dangerous!'"

Melissa told NBC10 the principal of the school sent them an email soon after.

"[The letter said] for me to let my husband know they wanted to stick to traditional methods of pickup in car line," she said.

The school superintendent later told NBC10 Malloy was driving the lawn mower during a busy time of day when there was a lot of traffic and they were "concerned about student safety."

While they were disappointed, the Malloy family told NBC10 they would no longer use the special ride to pick up their kids.

Cocaine Shipping Plot Bust

Authorities in New Jersey say that they've seized more than 11 pounds of cocaine after learning that someone tried to ship drugs using U.S. mail.

Joel Osman Matos-Santiago, 33, Victor M. Santana-Ricardo, 27, and Jessica Rodriguez, 25, were all arrested after police in Somerset County learned about a pair of packages possibly containing drugs being shipped from New Brunswick to a home in Franklin on Oct. 8.

Authorities say that when the two packages were intercepted at a post office in Franklin, police dogs indicated that they contained drugs.

The package was then delivered to the house, where authorities allege that Matos-Santiago and Santana-Ricardo were waiting outside. Matos-Santiago left, and Santana-Ricardo told police that he was told to leave the package on the steps and that he was Rodriguez's wife.

Matos-Santiago came back a little while later and put the packages in his car and sped off, authorities say. Police tried to stop the vehicle, but the driver allegedly tried to elude capture. Matos-Santiago's car eventually hit a police car on Park Street, and the man was placed under arrest.

Police later searched the vehicle and opened up the packages, finding the cocaine. Authorities say the drugs could have sold for as much as $500,000 on the streets.

Matos-Santiago faces drug possession, drug conspiracy and eluding police charges. Santana-Ricardo and Rodriguez both face drug possession and drug conspiracy charges.

The teen driver who fled the scene after hitting a Temple University student learned his fate Tuesday.

Rashan Roberts, 18, was sentenced to 11 ½ to 23 months in prison as well as five years probation.

Roberts waived his preliminary hearing back in May and admitted in court in July to running over 22-year-old Rachel Hall and then fleeing the scene back on April 29.

Roberts only had his learner's permit when he struck Hall, who was riding her bicycle near Temple University. He was charged with leaving the scene of an accident.

Roberts surrendered to police May 6 after his parents contacted authorities and told them their son was driving the 2012 Mitsubishi Galant that struck Hall.

Hall, a star Temple lacrosse player, was critically injured and continues to recover in a rehab facility.

Family and friends have set up a website to accept donations to help with her care.

Note: NBC10 received initial reports saying Roberts was sentenced to 11 ½ to 23 years in prison. That has since been corrected.
