Philly LDS Temple Taking Shape

After four years of construction, the LDS temple in Philadelphia is starting to take shape.

"It is hard to put it into words how magnificent this temple is and is going to be," Elder D. Todd Christofferson, a member of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints told KSL-TV.

That is how Elder Christofferson felt last week as he toured the site of the church's new temple while he was in town to speak at the Catholic-sponsored World Meeting of Families.

"It is true to the sense of history and architecture of Philadelphia," Elder Christofferson said. "I think, in time, it will really become a landmark in this city because it is so beautiful and uniquely suited to what Philadelphia is and has meant to the history of the United States over the years."

The temple is being built in the heart of downtown, and it is right across the way from the Catholic cathedral and the Catholic Diocese has been supportive of the project.

"It is nice to have that symbolize the friendship and the mutual goals and the things we feel we can do together in support of families and a humanitarian vein," said Elder Christofferson.

This small visitors' center welcomes those curious about the temple.

Service missionaries who staff it also found a way to build bridges with the union construction workers.

"The only thing we could think of was cookies, and so why not have a Cookie Wednesday," said Sister Pam Carr, a service missionary in the visitors' center.

Early on, there were few takers for the cookies.

"It was kind of brutal at first. They wondered why someone was bringing them cookies, and we just explained the people here in Philadelphia are so excited for this temple, and they just want to thank you," said Sister Carr.

But in time, the cookies started to disappear. Now volunteers bake 300 every week.

"We have probably given out 15,000 cookies in two years, and we still have a year to go. I'll tell you their favorite is triple chocolate chip," said Sister Carr.

Sister Carr said the cookies have helped everyone involved in the project better understand each other.

"I think we are able to talk about their lives, too," she said. "They have become more than construction workers, they have become our friends."

That's why Cookie Wednesday will continue until the temple is dedicated next fall.

Temple Professor is Also a Rapper

Last month, Aaron Smith noticed his students were in a slump, so the college professor decided to try a few rhymes to wake them up.

A professor of African American Studies at Temple University in Philadelphia, Smith rapped to the tune of Big Sean’s “One Man Can Change the World,” but changed the lyrics to express experiences that the students were going through, with a special spin: "Owls Were Meant to Soar."

Owls are the university's mascot.

Smith, who also goes by "Ben", posted the video on his Facebook page.

“I just wanted them to know that people have been down the same roads as them, and we know it’s not always easy,” Smith told NBC10.

Since he rapped that day in class, Smith said that students have come to his office hours increasingly more to talk about life and their coursework.

“I’m not just another teacher,” Smith said he’s been rapping since he was 18, and had planned to pursue a career in the music industry until he took a class at Temple with Molefi Kete Asante, professor and chair of the African American Studies department, that changed his life forever.

Smith said Asante always had a positive, optimistic message for his students, which inspired Smith to become a teacher and do the same.

“I feel like I’m doing what I’m supposed to do."

Investigators are hoping the public can help identify a suspect in the sexual assault of a Temple University student this week.

The 20-year-old victim was sexually assaulted at gunpoint at 11:35 p.m. Monday along the 1400 block of N. Carlisle Street, police said.

After the assault, the man fled and the victim ran to a nearby emergency call box.

Philadelphia Police's Special Victims Unit released surveillance photos of the man Friday afternoon. Cameras captured him exiting the Broad Street Subway at Cecil B. Moore Avenue shortly before the assault happened. The station is near the scene.

The man is said to be in his mid-20's standing 6-feet tall with a thin build and dark completion. He had a goatee and was wearing blue jeans, black boots, a green and gray puff jacket, black hoodie and black hat.

10 Qs With Bobby Hill, Local Boy Who Sang for the Pope

Usually at the age of 14 you’re in high school, joining math clubs, or playing sports. Well not for Bobby Hill of the Keystone State Boychoir. This 14 year old sang for Pope Francis during his visit to Philadelphia. After a last minute decision by choir director Stephen Fisher, Hill took the leap in front of thousands and sang Andrew Lloyd Webber's “Pie Jesu.” Lloyd Webber has said it's difficult to find a soprano with the ability to sing the notes purely and totally straight, but Hill NAILED IT!

After his introduction to the world, I had a chance to interview Bobby Hill at the NBC10 studios.

What was your initial feeling when you were asked to perform for the pope?
I was a little nervous, more excited, but I got a little more nervous after I found out I had to do it a cappella.
How are you dealing with all the fame that came so quickly?
I’m just staying with my family.
Who are some of your favorite music artists?
I listen to classical and pop.
What was the reaction from some of your classmates and family members after your performance?
I actually haven’t been to school yet. I did get a lot of text messages from friends and family saying I did a good job.
How has this new found fame affected your school work and personal life?
A lot I would say, we met with the president and he said I could take off a few days. Not the president of the United States, the president at my school.
The song you sang “Pie Jesu” by Lloyd Webber -is known as difficult. How did you deal with the pressure under such short notice?
I don’t think I had a lot of time to actually think about it. Oh and he [Andrew Lloyd Webber] posted about me on his Facebook.
What was the first thing you did after you arrived home from the festivities?
I was kind of over the moon and I went home, talked to some of my friends, and then went to sleep.
Have you had any surprising phone calls from celebrities, or public figures?
Not yet. I ran into people and they realized who I was. Like The Roots crew when I was down at the Jimmy Fallon set. Anderson Cooper met me at the Mass. I also met Charlize Theron and John Stamos.
Your only 14 years old, and what you did for the pope most people will never do in a lifetime. What do you see yourself doing 5 years from now?
I’d like to have a career in music, singing all types of music.
Word around Philadelphia is that you want to sing for President Obama next?
Yes! President Obama I would like would like to sing for you and bring the choir to the White House.

Philly Cops Join #GirlCopsAreAwesome Movement

The women of the Philadelphia Police Department took to Facebook to join the #GirlCopsAreAwesome movement.

The movement, and hashtag, started after a four-year-old girl from Washington State got a police officer uniform for Halloween.

The girl, Kinley, saw that the picture on the costume was of a boy, and got upset, thinking this meant she couldn’t be a police officer, according to the Philadelphia Police Department’s Facebook page.

Her mom posted a Facebook status about the experience, which prompted hundreds of female officers across the nation to send Kinley pictures of themselves with the hashtag #GirlCopsAreAwesome.

Officers also sent Kinley patches and memorabilia from their stations.

The Philadelphia Police Department posted a picture of their women officers and said if Kinley ever found herself on this side of the country, they’d be honored if she considered joining their team.
