Hart Angry Over Philly Thefts

Kevin Hart is famous for making people laugh, but a thief’s undoing of his recent charitable donation to students in the School District of Philadelphia is no laughing matter.

On Tuesday, when Hart learned that someone had stolen four of the 500 Sony Vaio computers that he donated to Philadelphia schools and Department of Parks and Recreation centers in low-income neighborhoods last month, he took to Twitter to express his frustration with the theft.

“I was just informed that some of the computers that I donated to the Philadelphia Public School System were stolen,” Hart said in a Tweet. “This is a message to all of the kids at the schools that were affected...ignorance like this only motivates me to do more.”

The beloved Philly-bred actor and comedian visited students at four city schools with Mayor Michael Nutter in November. In addition to his donation of 500 computers, during the visit Hart contributed $250,000 to the city’s struggling school district.

According to detectives in the Southwest Division, four $1,000 computers were stolen from the Cobbs Creek Recreation Center on Dec. 13.

Southwest detectives say two other recreation center thefts were reported on the same day. A Dell desktop computer and a 40-inch Panasonic flat screen TV were reportedly stolen from the Christy Recreation Center at 728 S. 55th Street. Similarly, at the 48th Street Playground at 1414 S. 47th Street, thieves stole a Dell desktop computer and a 40-inch flat screen TV, but they also got away with a buffer machine, a yellow compressor and a trash can.

Detectives say there were no signs of forced entry at any of the robberies, indicating that the thefts were likely committed by someone with access to the centers.

Despite the setback, Hart, a George Washington High School grad and proud Philly native says the theft has only prompted him to come back to do even more for the city’s students.

“I love y’all and I will be back shortly,” Hart tweeted to his young fans. “But I'm coming bigger and better this time. I put on for my city.”

Detectives say the investigation is ongoing. Anyone with any information about the stolen computers is encouraged to contact the Southwest Detective Division at 215-686-3183/84.

Nearly six months are a man was cut down and a teenager hurt as they stood on a porch a man is accused in the shooting.

Philadelphia Police announced the arrest Wednesday of Joshua Raheem, 21, of Baltimore Avenue.

After turning himself in Monday, Raheem was charged with murder, two counts of attempted murder, two counts of assault, two counts of reckless endangerment and various weapons charges for his alleged role as the triggerman in the triple shooting.

Gunshots rang out the night of June 6 along the 4900 block of W Thompson Street in West Philadelphia.

Police say a gunman fired off about one dozen rounds at a group of people gathered on the front porch of a row home.

"You have a male just walking up on this corner casually, knowing he has three people trapped on that porch, there's nowhere for them to go other than the house and just opens fire on them," said police Lt. John Walker at the time.

John Carrington, 21, who lived on the block died a short time later. A 15-year-old boy was shot in the back while a 22 year-old man was hit in the leg.

Investigators reviewed surveillance video from a nearby store during their investigation and eventually they determined Raheem as a suspect.

"This person is brazen. Obviously it's probably going to come down to some stupid argument that happened at some point. It's just uncalled for violence and these people just need to resolve their conflicts in other ways," said Walker.

Phillies great Darren "Dutch" Daulton had cause to celebrate this past weekend. Daulton married his longtime girlfriend Amanda in a private ceremony in Florida on Saturday.

WATCH: Emotional Ovation For Dutch

Daulton has been fighting brain cancer since his diagnosis this summer. He underwent brain surgery in July for Glioblastoma, otherwise known as "GBM" according to Tony Perri, president of the Darren Daulton Foundation. His upbeat spirit has been an inspiration to his fans.

A family friend told NBC10 sports reporter John Clark that Dutch felt Amanda had done so much for him, was there for him during the tough times (and good times) and that he just wanted to marry her.

The newlywed couple seized the moment by holding hands and raising them to celebrate with those who attended the nuptials, which included former teammate Tommy Greene, John Kruk and Pat Burrell.

Daulton spent 14 seasons with the Philadelphia Phillies before being traded to the Marlins during the 1997 season. He won a World Series with the Marlins before calling it a career.

He now chairs the Darren Daulton Foundation, which helps in the development of youth sports programs and homelessness organizations.

Daulton resides in Clearwater.

Center City Hotel Project

The developer for a proposed W Hotel at 1441 Chestnut St. in Philadelphia is on the cusp of receiving tax increment financing for the $280.4 million project.

A bill was introduced by Darrell Clarke, Philadelphia City Council president, and Councilman Bill Greenlee, to designate the site at 1441 Chestnut as a “Headquarter Hotel Tax Increment Financing District” and deem the parcel as blight. The property sits across from City Hall and next to the Ritz Carlton.

If that bill passes, the project would receive $33 million in tax incremental financing (TIF), according to the bill. The tax incremental financing would go into effect Jan. 1, 2014, when construction of the project is expected to begin, and run for 20 years.

In addition, the project is seeking to receive a total of $75 million in tax-payer subsidies. The developer would put up $205.4 million.

Family Missing Holiday Cards

One local family missing their personalized Christmas cards could get a holiday wish come true.

A Philadelphia man discovered a FedEx box, which was filled with the cards, discarded in the alley next to his Malvern Avenue home in Overbrook.

Victor Fiorillo says he initially thought the box was trash.  On closer inspection, he found the cards from Shutterfly Inc. inside.

The image of a happy looking family is topped with the message, "Onward and Upward in 2014" and the names, Roberto and Lizz.

"I posted it on the neighborhood message board and Craigslist with a photo," Fiorillo said.

The package, he says, was likely stolen from a porch and tossed later when the thief realized what was stolen.

All that remains of the address label on the box is the zip code, which is for Overbrook.

So far no one has contacted Fiorillo about the missing cards, but he is hoping someone will recognize the family so he can reunite them with the package.

"If I ordered these online and didn't' get them I'd be upset," he said.

A teenage girl left her would-be rapist needing more medical attention than she did after she fought back during a sexual assault inside a city motel.

The girl grabbed a box cutter to fight back during what Philadelphia police called a “potential rape” inside a room at the North American Motor Lodge along City Avenue in the Wynnefield Heights section of the city around 11 p.m. Wednesday.

The bloodied suspect actually hinted police to the investigation after he called them to report an assault.

“We found him bleeding… got him to the hospital and that’s when we found out the story,” said Philadelphia Police Sgt. Michael Lauder.

The unidentified man was slashed on his neck and throat and was taken to Temple University Hospital in stable condition.

After fighting back against the attack, the 17-year-old ran off and flagged down police at 46th Street and Sherwood Road -- about two blocks away. She left the box cutter at that scene, according to police.

The girl was taken to the Special Victims Unit to be interviewed.

A second young woman was also at the scene and police hoped to find out what role she played in the incident.

Firefighters pulled a man from a house fire early this morning but it was too late.

The man died after fire tore through a home along the 1100 block of Artwin Road in Talleyville, Del. – a short distance north of Wilmington.

The blaze broke out just after 4 a.m. Thursday and when firefighters arrived heavy flames could be seen coming from the back of the home, according to New Castle County Fire Marshal Mike Chionchio.

Firefighter battled back flames and pulled a man from the fire but he died at the scene from smoke inhalation and burns, according to Talleyville Fire Company officials.

The victims identity is pending a coroner's report, according to officials.

There were reports that a second person was rescued from the home but this report proved unfounded.

As SkyForce10 hovered overhead you could see the smoking remains of the brick home as investigators tried to figure out what happened.

The cause of the blaze remains under investigation. About $300,000 in damage was done to the home, said Chionchio.

A New Jersey surgeon with a passion for flying small aircrafts was killed after his plane crashed outside of a Virginia home.

Investigators say Gregory Voit, 52, of Northfield, New Jersey, was flying a single-engine Beechcraft. The six-seater aircraft had taken off from the Woodbine Airport in New Jersey Wednesday morning and was to land at the Charlottesville Albemarle Airport in Virginia.

Around 11 a.m., police say Voit somehow lost control of the aircraft. The plane crash landed in the front yard of a home in Albemarle County, Virginia. Investigators say it struck several trees before finally coming to a rest about 100 feet from the home.

Voit was pronounced dead at the scene. No one else was inside the plane at the time and the house was not struck or damaged. No one else was hurt.

Officials continue to investigate the cause of the crash. Both the FAA and NTSB have been notified.

Voit was a surgeon at the Shore Medical Center specializing in General Orthopedic Surgery, Sports Medicine and Hand Surgery. He is survived by a wife and four children.
