Elderly Mom Fights Back Against Home Invaders

A Philadelphia grocery store owner can be heard screaming for help after an armed masked man pushed her into her Northeast Philadelphia home late Wednesday night and her elderly mother wasn't going to allow here daughter to be attacked without fighting back.

The home invasion along the 6400 block of Dorcas Street in Lawncrest occurred around 9:30 p.m. when corner store owner Grimilda Vidaca entered through the side door of her home. Surveillance cameras – installed by Vidaca’s family after a home invasion less than a week ago – captured the armed masked man in a dark-colored hoodie forcing her into the home.

“The first guy that came in with her had her to the ground with a gun in his hand,” Digna Mercedes Silverio, Vidaca’s 76-year-old mother, told NBC10’s Keith Jones in Spanish.

Mercedes Silverio fought back – you can even see her hands attempt to choke the intruder before he knocked her to the ground and dragged back into the home.

The second man – also wearing a mask – who entered the home kept the women on the kitchen floor while the other guy ransacked the home,” said Philadelphia Police. The men eventually left out the front door without swiping anything, said the family.

Vidaca suffered minor bruising, said police. But, the attack left Mercedes Silverio with seven stitches in her head and a bruised shoulder.

"That's her, she's tough, actually she's on vacation, she doesn't live out here,” said Vidaca.

Vidaca’s son Kelvin Jimenez said he was angry and that he believed his mother was targeted because she owns a store. “It's a coward act. It's two women," he said.

Mercedes Silverio doesn’t regret fighting back.

"Whatever they are doing – they have something against my daughter – they should avoid it because they're going to have to kill me first,” she said.

The attackers may not get a chance to strike again because Jimenez said the family plans to move.

Police asked anyone who recognizes the home invaders to contact police.

Vice President Joe Biden said Thursday night he "will not hesitate" to run for president next year — but only if his family is up to it.

"I'll be straightforward with you: The most relevant factor in my decision is whether my family and I have the emotional energy to run," Biden said during an appearance at a synagogue in Atlanta.

Biden's son Beau, the former attorney general of Delaware, died of brain cancer in May at age 46.

Biden said that while other issues were a concern — particularly whether he could build a strong campaign and raise money — the only question that matters is, "Can my family undertake an arduous commitment they would be proud to undertake under ordinary circumstances?"

Katz Cause of Death Revealed Next Week

The National Transportation Safety Board is expected next week to determine — officially — what caused the deaths of seven passengers, including Philly philanthropist Lewis Katz, when the jet they were in crashed.

Katz, his two pilots, a flight attendant and three fellow passengers were killed when Katz' business jet, Gulfstream G-IV, overran a runway at Hanscom Field in Bedford, Mass.

The plane came to rest in a ravine and burst into flames. No one survived the May 31, 2014 flight which was headed to Atlantic City, N.J.

In a preliminary report, NTSB investigators pointed to the plane's gust lock system as a probable factor in the cause of the crash. It's designed to keep parked airplanes steady. The lock was still engaged when the pilots tried to take off which means they didn't have full use of all the parts needed to lift the plane off the ground.

Pilots would have discovered the system was locked during routine systems checks before takeoff, but documents released in April indicate the pilots rarely performed those checks.

After the crash, Gulfstream reported a problem with a fail-safe system allows planes to reach high speeds on the runway even if they're unable to take off. That discovery led to a design change.

The company contends pilot error caused the crash.

For Mary Grace Carson, choosing to work at the Jersey Shore this summer brought some “silver linings.”

Thursday morning, Oscar-nominated actor Bradley Cooper stopped in at Bob’s Grill in Ocean City, which caught Carson and other restaurant workers by surprise.

"It was so cool, he was really polite and took pictures with all the girls," she told the Atlantic City Press.
Carson, who lives in Montgomery County, said Cooper came in with his mom and ordered a Philly cheesesteak.

Restaurant manager Russell Hendricks told NBC10 Cooper and his family have frequented Bob’s since he was five years old.

“It was a pleasant surprise,” said Hendricks. “For the girls, it was kind of a slow week. He was a really cool guy, very amenable to whatever they asked."

Cooper was also spotted at Richman’s Ice Cream in Brigantine the previous night, and took pictures with staff and customers.

The Philadelphia-born actor grew up in Jenkintown, graduated from Germantown Academy and attended Villanova University before transferring to Georgetown University.
