South Jersey Town Offers Free Rides After Night Out

A South Jersey town is launching a new program that is aimed to prevent DUI-related deaths.

The program is called “Evesham Operation Saving Lives.”

Starting this Friday, Evesham Township is rolling out a free trolley service and a new app.

“If you’re an Evesham resident and you’re in one of our businesses that sells alcohol or you’re in one of our restaurants or bars, we are going to bring you home for free. We are going to transport you home,” Evesham Township Mayor Randy Brown said.

The goal of the program is to eliminate DUI/DWI offenses by “providing an alternative to safely get home,” Evesham Township Police Chief Christopher Chew said.

The app lets restaurants and patrons know when the next trolley is due to arrive.

Evesham Township has not had a DUI-related death since 2009. However, there has been a spike in DUI arrests.

“I firmly believe this commitment will have a significant impact in decreasing the amount of DWI/DUI crashes and fatalities that occur each year,” Chief Chew said.

The program is fully funded by state grants and donations from various community based civic organizations.

Renters Beware: Make Sure Your Pope Room's Legit

With the Papal visit less than a month away, the NBC10 Investigators discovered some people trying to take advantage of others looking for a place to stay. Investigator reporter Harry Hairston found some convincing ads for places to stay. But they weren't all legitimate.

Our investigative producer responded to an online ad for a hotel room at the Quality Inn near Philadelphia International Airport. A woman named Angela agreed to meet him there, after he reassured her he was not a police officer. The posting advertised one room for one night and SEPTA Papal passes for $400. When Harry Hairston told her it was against the hotel's policy to sell a room, Angela jumped into a waiting car and sped off.

It's against the hotel's policy to sell a room and by the way, the rooms that are still available for that weekend are going for half the price.

In Huntingdon Valley, Bucks County we found an ad for a 5-bedroom home for $1,500 during the pope's visit. But the home is not for rent. It's a foreclosure. Someone grabbed the picture posted on a realty site and used it in the pope rental ad.

Another man agreed to show us a 3-bedroom home in Philadelphia available for $2,500 during the pope's visit. Then he canceled, texting to say it had already been rented. When we called to ask him about it, he insisted on recording our conversation. We agreed, and told him we'd also record the conversation. He hung up.

If you want to rent a room or home for the Papal visit, experts say the best course of action is to work directly with a hotel or real estate agent. If you discover you've been taken advantage of, contact law enforcement.

A New York-based company that distributes to stores in Pennsylvania, New Jersey and 12 other states is recalling nearly 10,000 cases of frozen corn over concerns about possible Listeria contamination.

The frozen cut corn, made by Bonduelle USA Inc. of Brockport, was distributed in poly bags that said Wylwood Super Sweet Whole Kernel Corn, Market Basket Cut Corn, Bountiful Harvest Whole Kernel Cut Corn and West Creek Frozen Vegetables.

Listeria monocytogens, which can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, frail or elderly people, or people with weakened immune systems, was found in a package of the corn during routine testing at a retail store in Tennessee.

Day Care Teachers Encouraged Kids to Brawl: Prosecutors

Two former employees at a New Jersey day care are accused of encouraging children in their care to fight on camera, then sharing the videos on Snapchat while referencing “Fight Club.”

Erica Kenny, 22, and Chanese White, 28, were both issued summonses for fourth-degree child abuse, while Kenny was also charged with child endangerment.

Both were ticketed after authorities learned they may have instigated fights between children at the Lightbridge Academy in Cranford on at least one occasion in August.

Kenny also allegedly recorded the scuffles between the 4- to 6-year-old children with her cellphone, then shared the footage with friends on Snapchat.

Kenny and White have been fired, the day care said Tuesday. Jaclyn Falzarano, the vice president of operations at Lightbridge Academy, told NBC 4 New York: "We are completely appalled. As a mom, I know those feelings."

She said the day care is retraining its employees and is working with the state and other authorities to reexamine its screening process.

Prosecutors say that video from Kenny’s phone shows at least a dozen kids shoving one another to the ground and attempting to throw punches.

A voice similar in timbre and tone to Kenny’s can be heard referencing “Fight Club” as she encourages them to brawl. At one point, the adult even quotes the book and movie.

None of the children involved in the fight appeared to have suffered serious injuries. Prosecutors believe it only happened once.

Attorney information for the women wasn’t immediately available. Kenny did not comment to NBC 4 New York when reached at her home, and White, was not home.

The accusations surprised White's neighbors.

"When I see them, they look like good people trying to get a start in life, but with kids, that's serious," said James Smith, a pastor.

Police say they’re continuing to investigate the fights at the day care and are asking anyone with information to call the Essex County Prosecutor’s Office at 908-527-4696.

1 Dies After Police Chase in NJ

One suspect is dead and five others have been cuffed after police chased a stolen car that had been linked to a series of crimes including a shooting Tuesday morning, authorities say.

The majority of the six alleged carjackers were juveniles, the Essex County prosecutor says. The age of the suspect who died wasn't immediately clear.

Authorities say that a mother dropping off her two children at school in a silver Jaguar sedan was carjacked in Newark at about 9:30 a.m. The group of carjackers went on a crime spree throughout the morning, including two shootings and a robbery, the prosecutor's office said.

Police began pursuing the Jaguar and were able to stop the car at one point, smashing one side of the vehicle as it was near Hawthorne Avenue and Demarest Street. That's when the people inside the vehicle bailed out. One of the suspects was struck by a responding police car and died at the scene, authorities said.

The other suspects fled, and tactical teams were called in to search several homes and abandoned buildings in the area.

They took three people into custody after the chase, and police dogs indicated that two others were inside an abandoned building in the area, authorities say.

Hostage negotiators were brought in. A short time later, Chopper 4 footage captured the two suspects running out of the building with their hands up. They went to the ground once they were on the street and were taken into custody.

Dozens of police officers could be seen in the area Tuesday morning, some armed with assault rifles and tactical gear. At least 115 officers responded to the scene.

"This could have gotten crazy. This could have been far worse than this, there could have been subsequent robberies," said Newark Police Director Eugene Venable.

Two handguns were recovered by police from the stolen car, one of which had been used in the earlier robbery and shooting, authorities said.

Police are looking for the man they say forcibly kissed a 15-year-old boy when the teen answered a knock on the door to his New Jersey home last month.

The man allegedly knocked on the door of the home in Wayne on Aug. 18, according to police. When the teen answered the door, the man began kissing the boy and forced his way inside.

Once there, authorities say the suspect tried to take the teen’s clothes off, but the boy was able to fight him off.

The suspect, in his 40s or 50s, then left the home in a beige pickup truck, possibly a late-model Chevrolet Silverado with an extended cab.

Anyone with information about the man is asked to call the Wayne Police Department at 973-633-3528.

Police found three bodies inside an unlicensed funeral home in West Philadelphia Monday afternoon, according to investigators.

On Tuesday, the funeral directed was arrested and charged with three counts of abuse of a corpse, said Philadelphia Police.

State investigators received a tip reporting Hawkins Funeral Service on the 5300 block of Vine Street was operating illegally. Police responded to the building where they found three bodies. Investigators told NBC10 the bodies were not properly refrigerated with one of them embalmed in a coffin in an non-ventilated room and two of them decomposing. Investigators also discovered two unmarked, non-medical bags of human organs inside the building.

Investigators said the funeral director, Blair Hawkins, 52, tried to prevent an inspector from examining prep rooms.

Hawkins, the director of the funeral home is licensed, but the building, which is the former location of the Gaither and Kimble Funeral homes, is not, according to investigators.

"You have a responsibility to care for the dead as you are supposed to," said Philadelphia Police Lt. John Walker. "You shouldn't cut corners in situations like this where you're using a building that you clearly know has been out of business for some time."

Hawkins, on Monday, told NBC10 the entire ordeal is a misunderstanding.

"The bodies, we have paperwork," Hawkins said. "They're gonna be cremated. They're authorized. We don't refrigerate bodies that are being cremated."

Investigators told NBC10 one of the bodies may not even belong to the funeral home. Hawkins insists, however, the bodies were properly taken care of.

"I have proper paperwork and authorizations," he said.

Police Arrest Neighbor Who Leaned Into 6-Year-Old's Window

Residents of a South Jersey apartment complex helped bring a child luring suspect to justice.

Washington Township Police credited residents of the Washington Way apartments along Barnsboro Road in Blackwood with assisting them in arresting Gregory Scott -- who lives in the apartment complex.

A mother returned to her apartment of the L Building on Aug. 26 to find a man leaning into her 6-year-old daughter's first-floor window. The girl told investigators that the man in her window told her he was a doctor and a friend of her father's who she could call “Joe,” said Washington Township Police.

Police said before being scared off, the creeper took a cellphone photo of the girl and made a disturbing promise, the girl's mother exclusively told NBC10's George Spencer.

"He said that as long as you don't tell, I can come back every night," said the girl’s mother who asked not to be identified.

The man, luckily, never did return.

Police arrested Scott, 27, Tuesday afternoon and charged him with burglary and child luring. He remained in county jail Tuesday night, unable to post $40,000 bail.

The luring left the woman and her daughter shaken.

"I think she's just very confused because someone tried to make her feel like he was a friend," said the mother. "But we try to make her understand that he was a bad person."

No one answered the door at Scott's apartment -- which is just steps away from the victim's home -- Tuesday evening.
