Here we snow again?

For the fourth time in just nine days, our area is expected to be hit by a winter weather event.

NBC10 Meteorologist Tedd Florendo says snow should develop as early as 1 a.m. on Tuesday with the most intense snow set to hit shortly after 4 a.m. The snow should accumulate mainly during the morning rush hour and end between midday to late afternoon.

Philly/I-95

1 a.m. - 3 a.m. - Chance of snow, 24 degrees

4 a.m. - 11 a.m. - Widespread snow, 30 degrees

12 p.m. - 4 p.m. - Snow/Rain/Clearing, 35 degrees

North & Western Suburbs

1 a.m. - 3 a.m. - Chance of snow, 21 degrees

4 a.m. - 12 p.m. - Snow likely, 25 degrees

12 p.m. - 4 p.m. - Snow/Slow clearing, 34 degrees

South Jersey/Delaware

1 a.m. - 3 a.m. - Slight chance of snow, 24 degrees

4 a.m. - 8 a.m. - Areas of snow, 28 degrees

9 a.m. to 4 p.m. - Snow/Rain/Clearing, 36 degrees

4 a.m. - 5 p.m. - Snow likely, 26 degrees

6 p.m. - 10 p.m. - Snow/Slow clearing, 28 degrees

Another period of snow is expected to hit the area late Tuesday night around 10 p.m. but should be gone by Wednesday before 5 a.m. with little accumulation.

This storm should drop the most moisture to the north with two to four inches expected in the Lehigh Valley and the Poconos. One to two inches are expected in Philly, the I-95 corridor and the surrounding suburbs while there will be even lesser amounts in Delaware and the Jersey Shore.

This storm comes after snowstorms last Sunday, Tuesday and Saturday that have already left more snow on the ground than all of last winter.

But we're finally in for a bit of a break after the storm moves out, with clearing and dry conditions as well as warmer temperatures as the week progresses. By the weekend we should see rain and temperatures in the mid to upper 50's.

Frat Cuts Ties With Baruch College

The Pi Delta Psi fraternity has severed ties with a chapter at Baruch College after a pledge there died following a hazing ritual during a trip to the Poconos last weekend, according to a statement issued Monday by the national organization's president.

In the wake of the Dec. 9 death of 19-year-old Chun Hsien "Michael" Deng, national president Andy Meng said the fraternity is ending its affiliation with the Baruch chapter and revoking the memberships of its brothers for violating Pi Delta Psi's values and anti-hazing policy.

“Baruch Colony has violated the values and rules of our organization, including our strict no hazing policy,” Meng said. “As such, they shall no longer be recognized as having any association with Pi Delta Psi.”

Deng, of Queens, was taken to the hospital after participating in the ritual in which he and other pledges were blindfolded, weighted down with backpacks full of sand and knocked over repeatedly while trying to walk toward their pledge educator.

Deng had scratches on his left hip and buttocks, a cut on his left wrist and bruising on his knees, a police affidavit said. He also had massive head trauma and was placed on life support. He had no drugs or alcohol in his system.

He died the next day of head injury due to blunt force trauma, the coroner ruled.

According to the affidavit, three students who first brought Deng to the hospital initially told police that the group was wrestling in the snow when the 19-year-old fell backwards and hit his head. The group said they brought him inside and laid him by the fire, but he did not wake up.

In later interviews, the story emerged that Deng was actually injured during a fraternity ritual.

The Monroe County district attorney said last week that charges would likely be filed in the death, but the investigation has not been completed.

Baruch said Friday that it was still reviewing what happened, but was suspending the fraternity pending that review. Disciplinary action against the students is also being determined

Arrest Made After Store Shootout

An armed robbery suspect is in custody after a shootout with a store owner Saturday.

Darvin Cannon faces several charges including attempted homicide and armed robbery after the 20-year-old man exchanged gunfire with the owner of Galle's Indian Fields Market, according to the City of Bridgeton Police Dept.

According to police, Cannon entered the store on the 400 block of Indian Ave. around 7:10 p.m. with a handgun and demanded money from 25-year-old Briana Hernon, who was working at the time.

Cannon then came across owner Domenic Galle, 58, and the two fired shots before the suspect fled on foot.

"I just feel blessed to be alive and I'm glad no one was seriously injured," Galle said.

Investigators say a few minutes after the exchange, someone dropped Cannon off at Inspira Hospital in Bridgeton.

He was treated for a non-life threatening gunshot wound to his head before police arrested him, according to Bridgeton Police Capt. Michael Gaimari.

"There have been a rash of recent armed robberies in commercial establishments in the past three weeks in the city and in the surrounding townships," he said. "And we were fearful an incident such as this was going to happen."

A shot grazed Galle's arm, but appeared to only hit his shirt, according to police. The clerk was uninjured, but taken to the hops ital for observation. No customers were in the store at the time.

"It is fortunate no one lost their life," Gaimari added.

Police say the store owner's handgun is legally registered.

Investigators are trying to determine if Cannon was involved in any other recent burglaries.  But the suspect's mother says this seems out of character for her son.

"I think he was pushed to do it," said Rhonda Cannon.

Alleged Brick Robber Arrested

A man from the neighborhood is accused in a series of recent smash-and-grab burglaries at some of Center City’s most popular restaurants and convenience stores.

Philadelphia Police announced Monday that they had arrested Keith McClary, 56, and charged him in four burglaries dating back to October.

McClary who lives on the 700 block of S Martin Street is accused of using a brick to smash the window of a business before rooting through the cash register. Some of the spots he allegedly hit were the Palm Tree Gourmet on Pine Street, Gavin’s Café on Pine Street, Omega Pizza on South street and Honey’s Sit & Eat on South Street.

Police on patrol stopped McClary as he walked along S 19th Street near Rittenhouse Square on Saturday because he matched the description of the man seen on surveillance video released last week.

Keith McClary is accused in a string of recent smash-and-grab thefts. After the arrest, police say they found a black leather jacket similar to the one worn by the suspect during the thefts in McClary’s home.

The alleged spree may have started back in October but it intensified in recent weeks, according to reports.

At 4:10 a.m. on Dec. 9, McClary allegedly broke into Gavin's Cafe. In this case, police say he threw a brick through a side glass door and made off with $190 from a cash register.

That same morning, three other restaurants in a 5 block radius -- Resurrection Ale House, Honey's Sit & Eat and Dmitri's -- were burglarized by a man who threw either a brick or planter through glass front doors, police said. Only at one of the spots, Dmitri's, was he able to swipe cash. According to a police source, McClary admitted to burglarizing Honey's Sit & Eat. They did not say whether he was responsible for the Resurrection Ale House or Dmitri's burglaries however.

Finally, police say McClary robbed Omega Pizza,  located at 22nd and South Streets, back on Dec. 8. Investigators say he thew a brick through a window instead of the door during that incident.

Police also say McClary may be responsible for a robbery at the Pac-a-Deli convenience store at 12th and Walnut Streets around 4 a.m. on Oct. 2. This has not yet been confirmed however.

Valley Forge Office Complex

The redevelopment and rebranding of what is now Crosspoint at Valley Forge is nearing the finish line.

MIM-Hayden Real Estate Funds of Conshohocken, Pa., and the Davis Cos. of Boston started in mid-2012 on a roughly $30 million total gut and re-construction of the two office buildings at 530 and 580 E. Swedesford Road in Wayne, Pa. The buildings were nearly empty, the facade a really unattractive red faux brick and the interior dated.

The project not only included tearing the structures down to the steel but connecting the two, four-story buildings to create room for a new fitness center, conference center and café. Read more about this story on PBJ.com

Philly Trails With Minority Lawyers

Philadelphia still trails the nation when it comes to representation of minority lawyers at local firms but exceeds the national average when it comes to women lawyers, according to the National Association of Law Placement’s annual diversity data.

Nationally, NALP noted that women and minority partners continued to make small gains in their representation at law firms during 2013, and the percentage of minority associates has rebounded for the third year in a row after falling in the wake of the recession.

But it said the percentage of women associates has eroded every year since 2010, with the net result being very small net gains in the representation of women and minority lawyers overall.

“This is a significant historical shift, and represents a divergence in the previously parallel stories of women and minorities in large law firms,” NALP Executive James Leipold said. Read more about this story on PBJ.com

A judge accepted a former UNLV basketball player and Philly native's guilty pleas to reduced petty theft and trespass charges and allowed him to pay restitution for expensive Nike sneakers, $500 cash and almost $900 worth of video games from a friend's apartment last May.

Savon Goodman, 20, didn't appear in court Monday while his defense attorney, Bill Terry, outlined the plea deal to close Goodman's misdemeanor conspiracy and felony burglary and grand larceny case.

Terry says the agreement requires the 20-year-old Goodman to pay $1,370 in restitution, serve 200 hours of community service and stay out of trouble for a year.

Goodman quit the Runnin' Rebels in October after coach Dave Rice announced in August that the 6-foot-6 sophomore forward from Constitution High School in Center City Philadelphia would sit out the 2013-14 season.

Last season, Goodman averaged 3.6 points and 2.4 rebounds while playing about 9 minutes a game for UNLV.

Terry says Goodman has since moved home to the Philadelphia area.

A 23-year-old man faces charges including heroin possession following an arrest involving a K9 unit Saturday morning.

A K9 officer had to pull Kyree Curtis of the 400 block of N. Bancroft Parkway in Wilmington from the stolen Chevrolet Malibu he sat in near the intersection of West 30th and North Harrison streets in Wilmington, according to police.

Officers spotted the suspect driving the stolen vehicle westbound on West 30th Street around 2:37 a.m.

When police ordered Curtis to exit the car, he refused and locked the door, according to reports.

Police say the suspect unlocked the door as they prepared to make a forced entry, but then Curtis tried to put the car back in drive causing the officer to deploy his K9 partner.

The suspect did not sustain any injuries.

Officers discovered 10 bags of heroin inside the stolen car, which Curtis was driving without a valid license.

Police Hunt for Hit & Run Driver

The family of Nina Sheilds-Miller is standing by her side as she continues to fight for her life.

"My heart right now is heavy," said Miller's sister-in-law, Viola Miller-Riley. "I'm trying to fight back the tears because no one should lay in a state like this."

Miller, 62, was crossing the street near the intersection of Broad Street and Glenwood Avenue around 9:30 a.m. on Monday when police say she was struck by a dark-colored Chrysler or Dodge SUV. The vehicle then fled westbound on the 1400 block of Glenwood, according to police.

Friends and family say Miller was walking to a shopping plaza only steps from her home during the hit-and-run.

"We heard a thump and when we came to the window, we saw someone laying in the street," said Miller's neighbor Chris Davis. "We had no idea it was her."

Miller suffered major injuries to her entire body, including a compound fracture to her lower left leg. She is now in critical condition and under heavy sedation at the hospital. All her family can do now is wait by her side and hope for the best.

"I've been up there calling, 'Nina, Nina open your eyes,'" said her sister-in-law Lenise Miller. "If you can hear me, wiggle your toes."

Police say they collected surveillance video of the crash from a nearby Pathmark. They also say they have the passenger side mirror of the SUV that broke off during the accident.

As they continue to investigate, Miller's family has a message for the hit-and-run driver.

"If you know that you did this, if you have a conscience, we ask that you come forth and turn yourself into the police," said Miller-Riley. "Just call, that's all we ask for."

If you have any information on this incident, please call Philadelphia Police.

Photos of Philly's Homeless

0
0

Sunny Miller, 38, is putting the spotlight on Philadelphia’s homeless community, and he’s doing it with the lens of his camera.

“I always wanted to photograph people—homeless people in particular—but I never really knew how to go about that,” photographer Sunny Miller said.

Late last year, Miller had a brief exchange with a young homeless man who had asked him for change. A conversation between the two led Miller to take a photo of the man, and that photo sparked the idea for a series that is now prompting donations from all over the country to men and women living on the streets of Philadelphia.

“I began to ask questions, to hear his story. I learned that his parents had died in a fire and that he later lost his job,” Miller said.

“It sparked the beginning of a curiosity, I just felt like I was no different than him, he was just in a different situation that I am.  I wanted to find a way where I could come back and give him a photo of what I took of him, and also give him something small he might need like socks or something.”

So, Miller began taking photos of Philadelphia’s homeless and publishing them on his Instagram page. Alongside his captivating photos, Miller would post simple messages like, “Tito could use some help. 36 pants, socks, anything helps. Please contact me if you would like to donate.” He would then meet donors in person or have them ship items directly to him at which point he would deliver the donated items to the person in need.

The idea spread quickly through social media, and soon, Miller was receiving donations from people in states across the country.

Asma Drame-Coly, 33, is one of many people who have donated to Miller’s project. Drame-Coly said she was compelled to donate after seeing Miller’s photos featured in a Main Line Today story.

“Sunny's photos caught my eye. What I loved about his photos was that there was a story behind every face. An image is worth a thousand words, but I liked the fact that Sunny would stop and actually talk to these individuals to learn about them,” Drame-Coly said.

“More than receiving material goods or money, it matters just as much for people in distress to have someone stop and listen to them, and acknowledge them as individuals. I feel like, while Sunny is helping with donations, he is taking the time to find out about the people he meets.  I think every action makes a difference.”

In addition to carving time out of his busy schedule as a professional photographer, Miller says one of the biggest challenges of the project is getting back in touch with a homeless person when donations arrive.

“A lot of times it’s difficult to find them again. Sometimes they’ll have a cell phone but they’re off and on. The first guy I photographed, I’ve never seen him again,” he said. “If I can’t find them I just give it to somebody else. There’s always somebody that I can at least give something to.”

Aside from a few volunteers who have occasionally donated their time to the project, Miller has been doing all of the outreach and deliveries on his own.

He’s hopeful that some local organization dedicated to homeless efforts will catch on to the idea and help to support it. Whether that happens or not, Miller says he intends to keep his project going.

“I think it’s something that I just want to continue to do until there’s no need to do it,” he said. “As long as people want to help out and they’re moved by it, I guess I’ll keep on doing it.”

Coyote Spotted Near Homes

Residents called authorities after spotting a coyote acting aggressively in broad daylight Monday.

A neighbor along Quaker Road in Princeton called police around 12: 25 p.m. about a coyote that was growling at residents and acting aggressively, according to police.  The caller also told investigators that the animal appeared disoriented.

Officials located the coyote in a wooded area just off Quaker Road.  Authorities euthanized the animal after confirming its unusual behavior, according to reports.

Coyote sightings are common in this part of central New Jersey, but the time of day and displayed aggression made this an atypical occurrence, according to a police spokesman.
