A 50-year-old pilot was killed Saturday morning when the small plane he was flying malfunctioned and crashed near a northern New Jersey school, police said.

The Cessna plane went down in a wooded area behind the Kiddie Academy minutes after it took off from Essex County Airport, police said. A nearby resident heard four explosions moments before flames and smoke consumed the plane.

The man piloting the plane was heading to Teterboro Airport to pick up a passenger, West Caldwell Police Captain Gerard Paris said. But shortly after takeoff the plane began to malfunction and crashed behind the school.

Officials have not released the name of the New Jersey man who died in the crash.

The flaming wreckage of the plane could be seen near the intersection of Passaic and Fairfield avenues in West Caldwell. Detours were set up as a brush fire burned nearby.

Officials from the Federal Aviation Administration and the National Transportation Safety Board were expected to investigate the crash. Debris will be left in the area for 24 hours as the investigation continues, police said.

Essex County Airport is about a mile from the crash site. Earlier in the day, a witness said firefighters were putting sheets over a body near the wreckage.

Saturday, NBC10 and Telemundo62 partnered with animal shelters throughout the Philadelphia region for Clear the Shelters day, an initiative by NBC-owned stations to help find homes for the hundreds of dogs and cats waiting to be adopted.

People lined up before the doors opened as NBC10 invited viewers to be part of this historic event by visiting one of the more-than-two-dozen participating shelters covering most area counties. In addition, NBC10 livestreamed from the Pennsylvania SPCA on Erie Avenue in Philadelphia's Juniata neighborhood through Saturday afternoon.

Before some shelters opened, people were already lined up ready to adopt pets including long lines at the Delco SPCA and ACCT Philly.  By midday, hundreds of pets in our area, and thousands nationwide, had found homes. Some shelters even reporting unprecedented adoption totals.

Here's the full list of participating shelters from all three states that have waived or reduced spayed and neuter fees.

Police on Sunday morning were searching for a man who they say stole a van in North Philadelphia's Hunting Park section while two men with mental disabilities were sitting inside it.

Police say the thief stole the van, which was parked on Hunting Park Avenue near 13th Street while the driver ran into his home to check on an electrical problem, late Saturday night and drove off with it. Two men with mental disabilities, ages 56 and 57, were sitting inside the back of the van at the time.

Police responded after they received a report of the van theft. When they arrived in the neighborhood, they found the two men unharmed on 9th Street near Erie Avenue, about five blocks away from where the van was stolen. The van and the suspect, however, were nowhere to be found.

Later on Sunday, police released a description of the suspect provided by a passerby. The witness described him as being about 6 feet tall and said he wore a red-and-white plaid garment over his lower body.
