Polls Open Tuesday for Philly Special Election

North Philadelphia voters can take to the polls this week for a special election to fill the seat of a state representative who resigned after a corruption investigation earlier this year.

Democrat Donna Bullock, an attorney and special assistant to City Council President Darrell Clarke, is up against Republican Adam Lang, a computer engineer, and write-in candidate Judith Robinson, a lifelong North Philadelphia resident and real-estate broker for the 195th Legislative District seat.

Whoever wins the special election, which will take place Tuesday, will finish out former state Rep. Michelle Brownlee’s term and will be up for re-election in the spring. Brownlee resigned after pleading guilty to a cash-for-favors scheme in which she and five other elected officials were charged. Polls will be open from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m.

The 195th Legislative District covers swaths of North Philadelphia including Strawberry Mansion and Spring Garden.

Special elections will also take place in Northeast Philadelphia's 174th District and West and Southwest Philadelphia's 191st District, which also includes parts of Darby Township on Tuesday.

In the 174th, Democrat Ed Neilson takes on Republican Timothy Dailey for John Sabatina Jr.'s seat after Sabatina resigned to take a state senate seat, and in the 191st, Democrat Joanna McClinton takes on Republican Charles A. Wilkins Jr. and Tracey Gordon for the seat vacated by Ronald Waters when he pleaded guilty to conflict-of-interest charges.

Cowboys Banner Flies Over Eagles Practice

The NFL season is still about a month away but the rivalry between the Philadelphia Eagles and the Dallas Cowboys is still as bitter as ever thanks to a banner that flew over Lincoln Financial Field during the team’s open practice Sunday.

Moments after the National Anthem was performed in front of 43,000 fans, a small plane with a banner that said, “We Still Dem Boyz #SacksComing” flew over the Linc, drawing boos from the crowd.

The stunt, partially funded by Cowboys Defensive End Greg Hardy, was in response to a GoFundMe campaign from an Eagles fan to fly a “We Have Demarco” banner over the Cowboys training camp.

While the donated money for the banner went towards a children’s hospital some found it to be disrespectful, considering the fact it flew above the stadium immediately after the National Anthem. It was also during Military Day at the Linc in which over 30 members of the United States armed services lined up on the field before practice.

Reactions from Eagles players ranged from annoyance to indifference to amusement.

“It kind of made you feel a certain way, especially since we’re honoring the military, for that to happen,” said Eagles nose tackle Bennie Logan. “But it is what it is.”

Eagles linebacker Brandon Graham was more concerned about Hardy’s finances.

“All I hope is Greg Hardy has some money after football,” Graham said while laughing. “That’s all I care about.”

As for payback, Logan insisted any retaliation would be done on the football field.

“Every time we play them it’s payback,” Logan said. “You know the hatred that we have between us.”

The Eagles are scheduled to play the Cowboys on September 20 at the Linc.

Residents Protest Proposed Opening of Gun Shop

Dozens of outraged residents gathered in the Poplar section of Philadelphia Sunday afternoon to protest a shooting range’s proposed plan to expand into a gun store.

The rally took place at 4 p.m. near the Gun Range on the 500 block of North Percy Street between 9th and 10th streets. The Gun Range, formerly Colosimo’s Target Range, is the city’s oldest indoor shooting range. The neighbors, community and faith leaders are opposing the range’s efforts to gain a zoning variance at an upcoming meeting in order to be able to sell guns to retail customers.

The protesters told NBC10 the proposed gun store is too close to home and churches. They also said they’re concerned about illegal guns flowing into the streets and into the hands of criminals. The previous Colosimo’s gun shop was shut down by federal officials in 2009 after investigators determined it was selling guns to straw purchasers.

“If you’re gonna start something where you’re selling a lethal product and the whole neighborhood all around you is opposed to it, go someplace else,” said Bryan Miller, the organizer of the rally.

Yuri Zalzman, the owner of the Gun Range, told NBC10 he’s had conversations with the protesters but they’ve been unable to reach a compromise.

“People are here to express themselves,” Zalzman said. “They’re supported by the First Amendment. My customers express themselves using the Second Amendment. And I love this country.”

Zalzman said he’s not backing down and has every right to expand his business.

The protesters told NBC10 they plan on attending the Zoning Board Hearing which is set to take place Wednesday at noon.

Area DJ to Donate to Family of Pilot Killed in Crash

A Philadelphia DJ who suggested a fatal plane crash in California was connected to a GoFundMe campaign he created to fly a banner over the Dallas Cowboys training camp plans to donate money to the victim's family, even after it was determined the pilot was not the same pilot contracted to fly the banner.

Eric Emanuele also known as the Mighty ERock, sent the following statement to NBC10:

On July 31st I began a GoFundMe campaign to have a banner towing airplane fly over Dallas Cowboys Training Camp. A third party aerial advertising company was contracted to conduct the flight. The flight was scheduled to take place on August 9th over Oxnard, CA at 2:30 (PT). At 4:45pm (ET) on August the 9th I was informed the flight could not take place due to a plane crash at the airport. It is still to be determined whether or not the plane involved in the accident was the same plane contracted for the flight over Oxnard, or if the accident prevented our flight from happening. Regardless of the circumstances ANY loss of life is tragic. I am working with the aerial advertising company to ensure money raised from the original flight will go directly to the family of the pilot.

My family and I want to send our condolences to the family of the pilot. Until more details are released I have no further comment.

The Aviat Inc. A-1 single engine plane, towing a banner, crashed at about 12:30 p.m. (PT) on a runway at the county-owned airport in the 900 block of West Alondra Boulevard, about two miles southwest of Compton's central business district. The pilot was the only person aboard the plane, according to the Federal Aviation Administration. The pilot had just picked up a banner at the airport before the fatal crash, the agency said.

Emanuele, a local DJ, vlogger and Eagles season ticket holder, had created a GoFundMe campaign for a banner which read "We Got Demarco," which was meant to be flown over the Cowboys training camp in Oxnard, California. It was part of a series of pranks between the Eagles and Cowboys. During the Eagles' open practice at Lincoln Financial Field Sunday, a banner, partially funded by Cowboys Defensive End Greg Hardy, which read  “We Still Dem Boyz #SacksComing," flew over the stadium.

After the plane crash was reported, Emanuele made several posts on his Twitter account and GoFundMe page suggesting but not explicitly stating he was the one who hired the pilot. Several posters on the GoFundMe page also sent in donations to the unidentified pilot's family.

NBC4's Kate Larsen later confirmed however that the pilot killed in the crash was not the same pilot contracted to fly the Eagles banner.

Officials continue to investigate.

If Donald Trump's comments about Fox News Anchor Megyn Kelly are hurting his standing in the Republican primary, it's not showing in the numbers.

According to the latest NBC News Online Poll conducted by SurveyMonkey, Trump is at the top of the list of GOP candidates that Republican primary voters would cast a ballot for if the primary were being held right now.

None of that stopped Trump from coming in at the top of the poll with 23 percent. Sen. Ted Cruz was next on the list with 13 percent.

The overnight poll was conducted for 24 hours from Friday evening into Saturday. During that period, Donald Trump stayed in the headlines due to his negative comments about Kelly and was dis-invited from a major conservative gathering in Atlanta.

The body of victims killed in a crash near the Roosevelt Boulevard wound up about 50 yards from where the SUV crashed early Monday.

The sport utility vehicle slammed into a cell phone tower and overturned as it went down Adams Avenue in the city’s Lawncrest section around 2:30 a.m., said Philadelphia Police.

The force of impact ejected both a man and the woman from the Jeep, said police. Their bodies landed up to 50 yards away and medics announced them dead on the scene.

The crash caused the closure of the southbound lanes of the Boulevard (US Route 1) from Adams to Whitaker avenues as well as Adams Avenue from Whitaker to the Boulevard for hours Monday morning. The roads reopened in time for the morning rush.

After the crash, family members of the victims -- who police didn't immediately identify -- rushed to the scene of the mangled wreckage, one woman screamed for her brother.

No word yet on an exact cause of the crash.

Car Crashes Into Elderly Widower’s Home, Catches Fire

An elderly widower’s house caught fire after a car slammed in it about one week after the homeowner buried his wife.

A woman lost control of her car as she traveled along Benton Avenue in the city’s Rhawnhurst section around 11:30 p.m. Sunday then slammed into a home along Bustleton Avenue, said Philadelphia Police.

The crash sent most of the sedan into the single-story brick home and also caused the home to catch fire.

“We all came out and we saw the car almost fully inside the home of my next door neighbor and smoke coming out from all over,” said Jay Ramschandran. “It was bad smoke coming out… it was the most horrible thing.”

A passing motorist helped pull the driver from the wreckage, said police. She escaped with bumps and bruises that required fossilization. Accident investigators suspected the driver was possibly drunk.

The home’s 84-year-old owner -- who was asleep in a back bedroom -- escaped from the home without any major injuries but was hospitalized as a precaution, said police.

The man was forced from his home just days after burying his wife after she lost a 5-year battle with cancer.

“I feel so bad for him, he lost his wife last week and his home this week,” said Ramschandran. “He lost everything.”

The victim stayed with his daughter due to the damage to his home.

Target to Move Away From Gender-Based Signs

$

Say goodbye to “girls’ building sets” and “boys’ bedding.”

Target announced Friday that it is eliminating gender-based signs in some of its departments, a change prompted by social media backlash over separate aisles distinguishing toys for girls and boys.

“Over the past year, guests have raised important questions about a handful of signs in our stores that offer product suggestions based on gender,” the company said in a blog post on its corporate website. “Right now, our teams are working across the store to identify areas where we can phase out gender-based signage to help strike a better balance.”

The change comes after an Ohio mom called out Target’s gender designation in its toy department. Abi Bechtel tweeted a picture of a toy aisle sign that distinguished “Girls’ Building Sets” from regular “Building Sets.” Public reaction to the post was swift.

The Minneapolis-based retail giant said that in the past shoppers have said that signage by brand, age or gender helped them "find things faster." But the company said shopping preferences change and suggested products by gender in some departments is “unnecessary.”

"We heard you, and we agree," Target said.

Signs in the kids' bedding area will address children as a group instead of featuring suggestions for boys or girls. Target also said it will remove pink, blue, yellow and green paper on the walls of its toy shelves that indicate a gender. The new changes, which will also be applied to the Home and Entertainment departments, is expected to be phased out over the next few months.

“We never want guests or their families to feel frustrated or limited by the way things are presented,” Target's statement read.

Although some have criticized Target for the removal of gender-based signs, many are applauding the company for moving away from such gender stereotypes.
