Masked Gunman Kills 1, Hurts 2 Others

A man is dead and two others hospitalized after a masked gunman opened fire on a Kensington street Friday afternoon, police said.

Gunfire erupted along the 3000 block of B Street just before 4:30 p.m. leaving three men sitting in a 2005 Toyota injured, Philadelphia Police Chief Inspector Scott Small said.

A 22-year-old man was hit once in the head and chest, another 22-year-old man was hit once in the back and a 25-year-old man was struck four times injuring his chest, right arm and hand and chest, Small said.

Police believe the car's driver was not hit in the shooting and took the victims to nearby Episcopal Hospital for help. They were later transferred to Temple University Hospital's trauma center. The driver fled the scene.

Witnesses told police the gunman wore a mask and left the scene on foot. Ballistic evidence shows they let off at least five rounds. Small said the street was filled with adults and kids when the shooting happened.

"We're still lucky that no one was struck by a stray bullet or that any young children that are out here playing on a regular basis weren't struck by any gunfire," Small said.

Detectives interviewed witnesses and are collecting surveillance video from nearby homes and businesses.

Dolphin Stranded in NJ River Dies

A dolphin that was stranded in a New Jersey river died Saturday.

The dolphin was first spotted Wednesday in the South River near Old Matawan Road in Old Bridge, New Jersey. Hundreds of spectators gathered to watch the dolphin swim in the river, located roughly 10 miles from the ocean.

On Thursday workers from the Raritan Riverkeeper organization went into the water with a Baykeeper boat and tried to gently push and guide the dolphin down the river but were unable to do so.

The dolphin moved downstream from the river overnight into Saturday but then ran itself aground halfway to the Raritan River, according to the New Jersey Marine Mammal Stranding Center.

Rescuers took the dolphin out of the water and tried to move it to a veterinarian but it died on the way there.

The dolphin appeared to be very old and its teeth were ground down to the nubs, according to Bob Schoelkopf of the Marine Mammal Stranding Center. It was taken to a pathologist for a necropsy to determine a cause of death.

Kane Arraigned on Perjury, Obstruction Charges

Kathleen Kane, Pennsylvania's head prosecutor, walked into the Montgomery County detective bureau Saturday afternoon to be arraigned on perjury and obstruction charges.

The 49-year-old attorney general, wearing a white suit, smiled at a throng of reporters shouting questions, but did not answer any as she made her way into the Norristown high-rise across from the courthouse.

Kane is accused of leaking secret grand jury information to the Philadelphia Daily News and lying about it. Prosecutors said the information was leaked to damage the reputation of two former staffers who Kane had troubles with.

The first woman and Democrat elected to the office, Kane admitted to releasing the information about a closed case regarding a local NAACP leader headed up by one of those staffers, but said she did not break the law.

Like the defendants she's prosecuted, Kane was fingerprinted and had a mug shot taken before appearing before a district court judge via video conference to be advised of the charges levied against her.

"We're very confident when all the facts in the case come out that she is going to be exonerated," Kane's attorney Ross Kramer said. "We think that as people get a full sense of what the story is in this case that the narrative will look very different from it does right now."

Before the arraignment, District Judge Cathleen Rebar told reporters they would only hear Kane, as the camera would be pointing at the bench, not the defendant.

The attorney general gave one word answers as Rebar advised her of her rights. Bail was set at $10,000 unsecured which means she was not required to post any money — only provide her signature.

Despite calls to step down from leaders including Democratic Governor Tom Wolf, the state AG vowed to hold her post and run for re-election.

"A resignation would be an admission of guilt," she said earlier this week, "and I'm not guilty."

Kramer reiterated that statement Saturday saying, "she plans to continue working in that job and being effective."

Kane won her post in a landslide 2012 election after campaigning as an alternative to the male-dominated and partisan establishment.

She was expected to speak following the arraignment; however, she left the comments to her attorney as she got into a black SUV and left.

A formal arraignment is scheduled for August 24. Kane will make a plea during that hearing.

Mom Responds to Homophobic Graffiti

A mother’s powerful response to homophobic graffiti spray-painted on her home has garnered national attention.

Erin Kennedy DeLong of Villas, New Jersey said it all began during the early morning hours of July 30 when her 17-year-old daughter Miranda and her friend knocked on her bedroom door.
“You have to come downstairs,” Miranda said. “Someone spray-painted on the house and on our truck.”

DeLong went outside and saw the words, “I’m gay,” spray-painted on her garage door.

“There was this moment where I just stopped and said, ‘I can’t believe this happened in 2015,’” DeLong said.

Both Miranda and DeLong’s 14-year-old daughter are bisexual. Miranda’s friend, who came home with her the night of the vandalism, is transgender. DeLong immediately called Lower Township Police.

“They suggested that night that we clean it up because we don’t want people to see that,” DeLong said.

Yet rather than just clean up the graffiti, DeLong took it a step further in order to show support for her two daughters.

“We don’t want people to see graffiti in our neighborhood obviously,” she said. “But we’re also not going to be embarrassed that we have LGBT kids. We’re good with that. That’s where we got the idea to paint the garage rainbow.”

DeLong and her daughters painted the colors of the LGBT pride flag on their garage door for their neighbors, and the vandals to see. DeLong took a photo of the painted garage and posted it on Facebook where the response was massive.

“Stop Homophobia shared our picture and then it snowballed from there,” DeLong said. “It was amazing.”

DeLong’s photo went viral and her story was even picked up by the Huffington Post. Yet despite all the support, both DeLong and her daughters say they’re surprised by all the attention they’ve received.

“[They asked] ‘why is this newsworthy that our mom supports us?’” DeLong said. “That’s kind of our thing. This is what we’re supposed to do as parents. We want to make good little people. And how else can we do that than by showing them we’re proud of you. You’re awesome. What you want to be we want you to be the best at that.”

No arrests have been made in the vandalism. Despite the case being unsolved, DeLong takes solace in the fact that her response has inspired so many other families. She also has advice for other parents of victims of hatred and harassment.

“Love your kids,” she said. “Show people that what they say is more of a reflection on them than it is on you. If you support your kids and you love your kids, how you feel about them overshadows how other people do.”

SUV Crash in Downtown Philadelphia Kills College Student

A rollover crash in Philadelphia's Society Hill section early Sunday morning claimed the life of a 20-year-old man.

The victim, a college student, was with a group of three friends after a night out, NBC10's Jesse Gary learned at the scene. He was driving a Toyota 4Runner west on Lombard Street between 4th and 5th streets when police say he hit a bump and lost control of the SUV. The vehicle veered onto the sidewalk, struck two trees, flipped over and rolled onto its top.

Police said the young man was not wearing a seat belt at the time of the crash and was partially ejected from the SUV, which then rolled onto him. They said they believe speed was a factor in the crash, but that alcohol was not involved.

Three other people in the SUV were not badly injured and declined medical treatment. The four were childhood friends who got together before heading back to college for the fall semester.

An emotional scene unfolded at the site of the crash as family members of those involved in the crash arrived.

Police flipped the SUV upright and towed it from the scene after 7 a.m. Sunday. An investigation into the crash continued.
