SEPTA Opens Pope Pass Lottery

After technical glitches caused delays and changes to the buying system, SEPTA opened up the opportunity to buy so called "Pope Passes" early Monday without any major hitches.

At 12:01 a.m. Monday, SEPTA gave potential passengers 24 hours to sign up for a chance to ride SEPTA's Regional Rail to see Pope Francis in Philadelphia next month.

The Ticketleap page posted to SEPTA.org will remain open until 11:59 Monday night.

FAQs: Buying Your Pope Pass

SEPTA's first attempt at selling the special Papal passes came to a screeching halt last month when the website crashed almost as soon as the passes went on sale.

SEPTA's lottery system is an attempt to open sales to everyone without putting a huge burden on the system. Officials said there's no rush to enter the lottery the minute it opens.

"You can do it any time during the day," said SEPTA spokeswoman Jerri Williams.

The lottery got off without major hitches -- thousands of people signed up within the first hour -- as people who signed up received a confirmation email that states: "You have successfully submitted your entry for the SEPTA Papal Visit One Day Regional Rail Pass Lottery. If your entry is selected, you will receive an email with a link to a secured website where you will complete the purchase of the One Day Regional Rail Passes requested for September 26 and 27."

Passengers with "winning entries" in the lottery will receive a "congratulations" email on Thursday, Aug. 6 with a personalized link that will allow them to complete the sale by entering payment information.

During the Pope's visit, SEPTA will restrict Regional Rail service to 18 stations. Trains earlier in the day will be inbound express to Center City stations only, and trains later will be outbound express only to selected stations. Anyone who enters the lottery has an equal chance of getting the $10 passes must be purchased for time windows (5:30 to 8:30 a.m. or 8:30 a.m. to noon) and are limited to 10 passes per person per day on Sept. 26 and 27.

SEPTA plans to sell 175,000 of the passes for each day (Sept. 26 and Sept. 27) that the Pontiff is in town.

Multiple people were injured, including a police officer, after a speeding car driven by an alleged drunk driver crashed into at least one other car in Jersey City, setting off a chain reaction, police said.

The first car hit the second shortly after 8 p.m. Sunday at Ocean and Myrtle avenues, according to police. The impact of the crash sent the second car flying onto a sidewalk, where it hit a Jersey City police officer.

"I saw all these cars crashing," Heidi Morales, who witnessed the crash, said. "There was a lot of people screaming, crying."

In a video obtained exclusively by NBC 4 New York, neighbors can be seen rushing to the officer's side. Other people in cars nearby were also injured, according to witnesses.

Several people were taken to area hospitals for treatment, including the officer, who police said is expected to be OK. She was listed in stable condition Monday.

The driver of the first car, 30-year-old Keith Jeffers, of Wegman Parkway, was arrested at the scene and taken to an ambulance in handcuffs. He was charged with four counts of assault by auto, knowingly leaving the scene of a motor vehicle accident with serious bodily injury and driving while intoxicated.

Pope Expected to Address Philly's Sex Abuse Scandal

When Pope Francis comes to Philadelphia, friend and former colleague Silvia Tuozzo expects he may bring a “healing message” that addresses deep wounds left by the priest sex abuse scandal.

Before he was elected pope, Tuozzo was hired by Father Jorge Bergoglio in 2007 to help run the television station for the Archdiocese of Buenos Aires, Argentina. She saw him or spoke with him almost daily.

“What happened in America hurt him as a priest,” Tuozzo said from a balcony in the center of Buenos Aires that looks out over the Cathedral where Archbishop Bergoglio said Mass and served the people of his homeland.

Although he was a stern boss who rarely smiled, according to Tuozzo, the themes you hear Pope Francis talk about when he visits Philadelphia the last weekend of September, will be themes he has believed in and preached about for years.

"He has always spoken about a God of mercy. Since the first day. He really believes in a God of mercy. He really believes in love; love as healing. And I think he understands the pain in people," Tuozzo said. “I think he needs to heal the people [in the United States] and I think he will go with a healing program to America."

NBC10’s Jim Rosenfield went to the homeland of Father Jorge to learn first-hand from friends, colleagues and critics about the man who became Pope Francis. Join us Tuesday at 7 p.m. on NBC10 for our half-hour report on Pope Francis: The People’s Pope.

Hitchhiking Robot Destroyed in Philly: A hitchhiking robot that captured the hearts of fans worldwide met its demise in Philadelphia, its creators said. The Canadian researchers who created hitchBOT as a social experiment told The Associated Press that someone in Philadelphia damaged the robot beyond repair early Saturday, ending its first American tour after about two weeks. The kid-size robot set out to travel cross-country after successfully hitchhiking across Canada in 26 days last year and parts of Europe. It's immobile on its own, relying on the kindness of strangers. Those who picked it up often passed it to other travelers or left it where others might notice it. It started in Marblehead, Massachusetts, on July 17 with its thumb raised skyward, a grin on its digital face and tape wrapped around its cylindrical head that read "San Francisco or bust." But hitchBOT never made it off the East Coast. One of the last known people to see the robot whole was YouTube prankster Jesse Wellens, of Philadelphia. Wellens told Philly.com he dropped it off about 5 a.m. Saturday on a bench in the Old City section of Philadelphia. That was the last time the robot was seen intact. Wellens tweeted at 3:57 a.m. Saturday that he was “Dropping the Robot at Elfreths Ally. Waiting for one of you peeps to pick it up.” After hearing of its demise, Wellens tweeted “Thanks Philly!!! You freaking Killed @hitchBOT I'm so mad right now.” Learn more about robot here.

Sea Lion Pups Born at NJ Amusement Park

As if you needed another reason to go to Six Flags Great Adventure, the amusement park now has two adorable new attractions.

New Jersey's largest theme park is celebrating the birth of two female California sea lion pups.

Piper and Ridley, born June 5 and June 18, respectively, are both high-spirited and full of energy, according to Jessica Peranteau, senior supervisor of animal training.

“She has no qualms about sassing the trainers or her mother through vocalizations. She is exploring her independence at an early age,” Peranteau said in a news release. Piper also seems to enjoy blowing bubbles in the water, according to Peranteau.

Ridley is named after the endangered Ridley sea turtle species because of her flipper movements. Although sea lion pups are not usually competent swimmers shortly after birth, Ridley quickly showed signs of proficiency in the water.

“[Ridley] finds sliding down the hill on our stage especially rewarding and fun,” Peranteau added.

Ridley is the smallest sea lion pup born at the park, weighing in at 15 pounds. The two pups are expected to reach 110 to 220 pounds when fully grown.

Guests can see Piper, Ridley and their mothers at the park’s SeaFari Theater in The Golden Kingdom section of the Jackson, N.J. theme park.
