Police are investigating the theft of a copper generator cable worth $100,000 from a South Jersey business.

Maple Shade Police say the generator cable, valued at $100,000, was taken from a shipping container at Sunbelt Rentals on Route 73 on July 11.

The getaway vehicle is described as a white GMC van with windows on the passenger side of the cargo compartment, but not on the driver’s side.

Maple Shade Police say the van had a distinctive black mark about midway on the driver’s side of the vehicle, which may possibly be a rust spot or a hole.

The van also had large chrome/metal front mirrors with a distinct mirror attached to the back of the van on the top of the driver’s side.

This vehicle and a lighter colored car were seen at a business across the street on a video surveillance camera.

Anyone with information is urged to contact the Maple Shade Police Department at 856-779-7111.

Police say photos of marijuana plants on Instagram led to an arrest in South Jersey.

Connor Kennedy, 20, of Sicklerville, New Jersey was arrested Thursday and accused of growing marijuana inside an abandoned home.

An investigation began after witnesses reported seeing seven marijuana plants being grown on the rear deck of an abandoned home on Brearly Drive in Sicklerville.

Winslow Township Police conducted surveillance of the home during the week of July 13 and observed Kennedy tending to the marijuana plants during the late night and early morning hours, investigators said. The Philadelphia region’s most famous trail is now receiving national recognition. The Schuylkill River Trail was named the best urban trail in the country in a recent online poll by USA Today.

The trail beat out other notable stretches in the U.S. including the MKT Nature and Fitness Trail in Columbia, Maryland and the Lakefront Trail in Chicago. A panel of travel and outdoor recreation experts nominated 20 American trails while USA Today readers voted for their favorite over a four-week span.

The 26.5 mile trail runs along the Schuylkill River from Center City in Philly through the Valley Forge National Historical Park in Montgomery County and ends in Phoenixville, Chester County. In April a new stretch of land connecting Phoenixville to the Schuylkill River Trail was opened, connecting the Borough to over 60 miles of finished trail.

A bike and pedestrian bridge is currently under construction in Valley Forge that will bring bikers, runners and walkers across the Schuylkill River.

Brother of Handyman Accused of Killing Grad Speaks

The brother of a fired maintenance man accused of killing a Drexel University graduate is speaking out for the first time since the charges were announced.

"Why?" asked Harry Harris. "What is it that she had? He lived with a girl. He had girlfriends. Why? Why her?"

Harris' brother James Harris was charged Friday with the murder of 27-year-old Jasmine Wright. Police said the 56-year-old lurked inside the woman's third-floor apartment along 50th Street for 30 minutes on the afternoon of July 16.

When she walked in the door, he grabbed Wright, who was on the phone with her mother in  Virginia, and struggled with her, police said. Her mother heard the scuffle before the phone call abruptly cut off.

Wright was severely beaten, sexually assaulted and strangled on the apartment floor, police said. Investigators believe Harris moved her battered body to a bed and used bleach on the floor to try and cover his tracks.

"I would never expect my brother to have committed this crime," Harry Harris said. "Why? Why would you have done this?"

A week before the killing, James Harris lost his job as a maintenance man in the building and was banned from the property for failing to clean and take out the trash, police said. The building's owner never got his keys back.

Witnesses placed Harris at the scene a half-hour before the murder and DNA linked him to the case, according to detectives. He is charged with murder, rape, burglary and related offenses. Court records did not list an attorney.

Harris has a history of violent acts including being found guilty of voluntary manslaughter in the 1982 death his father. He served time in prison. Harris was charged with murder in the case, but was acquitted of the charge. Police did not immediately know the case details. Harry Harris recounted the night of his father's death.

"It was a holiday," he said. "It was Christmas and my brother just came back to see us. I was with one of my other friends. We were upstairs knocked out sleeping. I don't know the altercation that him and my dad had for that to happen. I just know that we heard shots. Me and my friend jumped out and we ran down the stairs and my pop was laid out on the floor."

Harry Harris said his father was abusive towards him, his siblings and his mother. He believes that abuse had an impact on his brother.

James Harris faced various theft and burglary counts and was charged with rape and attempted rape in the past but was either found not guilty or had the charges withdrawn, according to court records.

While Harry Harris said he sends his deepest sympathy to Wright's family, he also told NBC10 he still believes his brother is innocent of the crime.

1-Year Anniversary of Fatal Carjacking Hit-&-Run

A year after a tragedy shook a Philadelphia community to its core, loved ones gathered to celebrate the lives of a mother and her three children.

On July 25, 2014, Keisha Williams, 34, her children, 15-year-old Keiearra Williams, 10-year-old Joseph Thomas Reed and 7-year-old Terrence Moore, and 70-year-old Thelma Brown were struck by a carjacked SUV while they were selling fruit on a street corner in the city’s Tioga section.

The three children were killed instantly. Williams, who was brain dead, died two weeks later in the hospital. Brown survived and continues to recover from her injuries.

On the one-year anniversary of the tragedy, friends and family of Williams held a memorial cookout at the intersection of Allegheny and Germantown Avenue where the crash occurred. The event was an upbeat affair full of food, music and fond memories.

“Keisha wouldn’t want us to be all sad and depressed all the time crying,” said Sharmaine Williams, Keisha’s younger sister.

Sharmaine Williams has taken custody of her sister’s surviving children Charmaine, 12, and Aeisha, 14.

“She has two kids that she left here and we’re trying to uplift them,” Sharmaine said. “And we want them to enjoy themselves.”

Everything from the DJ to the food during Saturday’s event was donated. Organizers say it speaks to the strength of the members of the community.

“It is our job and responsibility to step up when we see things of this nature happen,” said Sheila Armstrong, one of the organizers.

Jonathan Rosa and Cornelius Crawford are facing second-degree murder charges as well as other charges related to the carjacking of a real estate agent in connection to the incident. Terrence Moore, the father of the youngest victim of the crash, told NBC10 Saturday’s show of support was comforting as he continues to wait for the trial to begin.

“I thank everybody for coming out here and showing their peace and love to me,” Moore said. “I’m just trying to stay strong and deal with it the best way I can.”

Armed-Robbery Victim Shot While Chasing Gunman

A victim of an armed holdup was shot several times on a Philadelphia street after police say he chased an armed robber down the block.

The 30-year-old man had just left a party on Sanger Street near Frontenac, in Northeast Philadelphia’s Summerdale neighborhood, when police say the robber approached him and held a gun to his head. The gun apparently jammed when the robber tried to fire at the victim’s head, police said, so the robber took off running down the block without taking any of the victim’s belongings.

The victim, police said, decided to chase the robber – thinking his gun was still jammed – but the robber turned around and successfully fired several shots at the victim. The victim was wounded three times in the hip, and drove himself to Aria Health’s Frankford Hospital, police said.

The man was transferred to Aria Health’s Torresdale Hospital’s trauma unit and remained in critical condition early Sunday morning.

Police have not reported any arrests in the shooting.
