Family and friends including public officials have gathered to remember the husband of former New Jersey Gov. Christie Whitman.

Services for John Whitman took place Thursday at Lamington Presbyterian Church in Bedminster. Among those attending the closed services were Senate Minority Leader Tom Kean Jr. and state Sen. Richard Cody.

A spokeswoman for the former Republican governor tells The New York Times the state's only first gentleman died July 2 after suffering a catastrophic brain injury in a fall in mid-June. He was 71.

Christie Whitman calls him "a wonderful husband, father and grandfather." She served as governor from 1994 to 2001.

John Whitman was an investment banker and a managing partner at Princeton-based Sycamore Ventures.

The Army veteran and Yale University and Harvard Business School graduate was born in Albany, New York.

"Horrific and Unprecedented": NJ Man Accused of Killing 7 in 2 States

A New Jersey man has been accused of killing seven people in two states, including his own cousin, and three people within several hours in a separate shooting spree last month in the Garden State, authorities say.

Todd West, of Elizabeth, faces several counts of murder and numerous weapons charges in connection with a string of shootings in his hometown and in Pennsylvania over the last several weeks, authorities say.

"It is horrific and unprecedented," Union County Prosecutor Grace Park said at a news briefing announcing the charges. "We've never seen one individual commit this type of shooting spree in such a short period of time in this county."

West is accused of shooting three people to death in Elizabeth over the course of several hours June 25 and injuring another. Jamil Payne, Kevin Nelson and Dennis Vega were killed. In each case, the gunman approached in a white car, shot the victim several times and then left, Park said.

West is also accused of fatally shooting his cousin, Michael Thompson, on May 18.

West headed to Pennsylvania as authorities closed in on him, authorities said, allegedly killing two men in Allentown on Sunday and one in Easton on Monday. Pennsylvania authorities say those shootings appear to be random. West was arrested after the Pennsylvania shooting spree.

Authorities say West knew several of his alleged victims and may have some gang affiliations. The violence isn’t thought to have been motivated by gang rivalries or drugs, authorities said.

All seven victims were shot with a .38-caliber handgun, Park said. A motive remains unclear.

West's aunt, Clarissa Thomas, said she spoke with him right before the shootings.

"He was a totally different kid a couple of weeks ago," she said. "As to why this happened, I can't even understand why."

Rafael Fonseca went to school with West and said he was a loner.

"He was more to himself, stepped back," he said.

Fonseca knew one of the victims, Payne.

"He had two daughters, he was a great father. He didn't mess with anybody, just worked," he said of Payne.

Attorney information for West wasn’t immediately available. He remains in custody in Pennsylvania on $5.5 million bail.

Home Intruder Stared at Sleeping Victims, Ate Chips: Cops

A home intruder in New Jersey broke into 10 homes on the same street in under two hours, in many cases standing over and staring at his victims as they slept, police say.

O'Brien Rosario, 23, is accused of breaking into the homes in South Brunswick.

Authorities believe Rosario's drunken and drug-filled crime spree started when he broke into a car at a bar, found a license and a set of keys and went to the address to steal another car.

A relative of one of the victims said instead of burglarizing the home, Rosario just stood in a doorway, feet from where the victim slept.

"He's just standing here in the dark, eating chips. It's a bit creepy," said Abdallah Aberdeen, the nephew of the victim.

Rosario ate chips and watched Aberdeen's uncle until a nightlight casted a shadow, waking him up and scaring Rosario away, said Aberdeen.

"Once he knew that he was going to come after him, he just said 'everything is OK,' and walked out," said Aberdeen.

"All of the people in the middle of the night were very scared, to have somebody knocking on their windows, moving screens up," said South Brunswick Police Det. Dennis Yuhasz.

Another homeowner, Jerry Makowski, said he came out of his home to find the screens up around his house. Police arrived the next day to take fingerprints off the windows, and those prints helped police identify and locate Rosario in Franklin Wednesday.

"He ultimately confessed to the entire crime spree for us," said Yuhasz. "He actually remembered a lot of the details."

Rosario remains in jail; attorney information wasn't immediately available.

A history teacher at a shuttered New Jersey high school has been arrested in connection with a series of sexual encounters with a 17-year-old student, prosecutors say.

Fatima Grupico, 24, of Linden, is accused of having sexual relations with the boy on a number of occasions at the now-closed Cardinal McCarrick High School in South Amboy in May, according to the Middlesex County Prosecutor's Office.

She was arrested on sexual assault and child endangerment charges and remains in custody while waiting for bail to be set. Attorney information wasn't immediately available.

The investigation into Grupico began when school officials contacted police, prosecutors said.

She has been unemployed since the school closed at the end of the school year. The struggling Catholic school was the 11th one in central Jersey's Diocese of Metuchen to close since 2009, according to Asbury Park Press.

In a gritty, industrial section of Newark known as the Ironbound, something big is taking root: an old steel factory is being converted into the world's largest indoor vertical farm, a $30 million project funded by private investors, public tax credits and grants.

The AeroFarms headquarters will produce 2 million pounds of leafy greens and herbs a year to be sold in and around Newark.

"This is a dream come true. You go to bed, you wake up, and here it is," said Newark Mayor Ras Baraka.

"It's going to be a tremendous impact for the whole community," said chef Vanessa Parker, who works at a local school already using vegetables produced by AeroFarms. "Hopefully everyone gets on board and learns about it and understands the importance of growing vegetables.

Living and working in the Ironbound, 21-year-old Sayyid Johnson never imagined being a farmer inside an old steel factory.

"To get the young people doing something productive, learning, to get them off the streets, high-quality jobs, means a lot for our city," said Johnson.

"You learn every day. Being a farmer is fun," said Johnson.

"By 2050, there will be 9 billion people who need to eat everyday and the solution is right here on the property you're standing on," said New Jersey Acting Governor Kim Guadagno.

Prices for the fresh vegetables will be comparable to those being sold at the supermarket.

The first phases of this project are set to begin later this year.

As severe storms moved through the Philadelphia region Thursday night and part a funnel cloud was reported in part of New Castle County, Delaware.

People in the areas of the New Castle Mobile Home Park and the Delaware River Industrial Park on Dock View Drive reported seeing a funnel cloud around 7:45 p.m., said the New Castle County Office of Emergency Management. The cloud hovered about 25 to 30 feet off the ground.

The storm caused a roof to collapse on an apartment building, snapped utility poles, brought down wires and left hundreds of customers without power. An electrical transformer also crashed into a mobile home and two walls collapsed at the industrial park, said the county OEM.

Luckily no major injuries were reported.

The county set up a shelter at William Penn High School at 713 E. Basin Road in New Castle for any residents forced from their homes.

The county OEM asked the National Weather to survey the damage Friday morning to determine if a tornado touched down.

There were also repairs of a funnel cloud in Berks County Thursday night as the storm damaged a school.
