What officials initially believed to be a shark at a Monmouth County beach was actually a sunfish.

Officials alerted residents Sunday that a shark was spotted in the water near the Driftwood Beach Club on the 1400 block of Ocean Avenue in Sea Bright late Sunday afternoon.

Beach and police patrols warned beachgoers to stay out of the water as they investigated. Officials later determined what they believed was a shark was actually only a sunfish however. All alerts and warnings were later canceled.

A man was cited after police say he caused a four-vehicle crash in Millsboro, Delaware that injured 15 people.

Police say the crash occurred just before noon on Sunday at the intersection of U.S. Rt. 113 and Dagsboro Road. Walter Warrington, 79, of Frankford, Delaware was traveling northbound in a 2005 Mercury Marquis and tried to make a left turn onto Handy Road on a red light, officials said.

As Warrington crossed into the southbound lanes of Rt. 113 he drove directly into the path of a 2013 Chrysler Town and Country and collided with the vehicle. Warrington's vehicle then struck a 2002 Suzuki X17 pickup truck that was stopped on Handy Road. Finally Warrington's vehicle struck a 2009 Nissan Maxima that was also stopped on Handy Road. Warrington's vehicle then overturned onto its side before coming to a stop.

Warrington, who was properly restrained, was taken to Beebe Healthcare where he was treated for non-life threatening injuries. He was cited with failure to stop at a red light.

The drivers of the other three vehicles involved in the crash, seven passengers in the Chrysler Town and Country and three passengers in the pickup truck all suffered non-life-threatening injuries. An eighth passenger in the Town and Country was treated for serious injuries at Christiana Hospital.

The intersection at Rt. 113 and Handy Road was closed for an hour and a half due to the crash.

A carjacker managed to steal a police cruiser in New Jersey Sunday and ram several patrol cars during a chase that ended when he crashed the vehicle at a car dealership, authorities said.

The afternoon chase began when a woman stopped her car to help a man lying on the ground in an intersection in Englewood Cliffs, borough Mayor Joseph Parisi Jr. told NBC 4 New York. When she got out of her car, the man ran to the driver's seat, he said.

The women's two children were in the back seat, but quickly bolted from the car when their mother frantically shouted at them to run, Parisi said. The children weren't injured, he said.

The carjacker drove off followed by police.

At some point, the suspect, whose identity hasn't been disclosed, abandoned the stolen vehicle and snatched a squad car from an Englewood Cliffs police officer who had exited the cruiser to confront the suspect.

The suspect drove off in the stolen squad car and headed north toward Alpine, police said. The suspect rammed other patrol cars during the pursuit and attempted to run down a police officer, officials said.

An Alpine police officer was injured when his patrol car was rammed, officials said.

Officers pursued the stolen squad car through nine communities in Bergen County.

The suspect crashed the cruiser near a Dodge dealership in Paramus and was captured after a brief foot chase, police said.

The two injured officers were treated for minor injuries at a local hospital.

NJ Man Refused to Dismantle Fireworks: Police

A New Jersey man was arrested Saturday after he refused to dismantle a firework contraption that he had set up on his property and told officers he intended to set the fireworks off despite their warnings, police said.

Bujar Xhudo, 52, had allegedly erected a large fireworks display — including more than 100 separate explosive airborne devices wired to an electronic controller — in plain view on his property in Sparta Township, according to police.

An officer arrived at Xhudo's home a short time after 9 p.m. and told him that he couldn't set off the display and that he would have to dismantle it. Xhudo refused and told the officer that he planned to set off the fireworks for a large party he was hosting, police said.

Another officer arrived and the homeowner was warned several more times that he couldn't set off the pyrotechnics. When Xhudo refused again, he was arrested on illegal fireworks charges, police said.

Local police and fire officials worked with the New Jersey State Police bomb squad unit to dismantle the display and transport the fireworks by truck to the Sparta Police Department. Police said the bomb squad unit will dispose of the explosives.

Xhudo was processed and released several hours after his arrest and made his first appearance in court Sunday.

NJ's Carli Lloyd's Historic Hat Trick Wins Women's World Cup

A South Jersey soccer star carried the United States Women’s National Team to World Cup glory Sunday with an unprecedented hat trick in a matter of minutes.

Carli Lloyd scored three times as the U.S. jumped to a four-goal lead in the first 16 minutes, and the Americans overwhelmed defending champion Japan 5-2 for the team's first World Cup championship since 1999.

"It's been a long journey, my career. I've had a lot of people believe in me, in my corner, from day one," said the midfielder, who turns 33 on July 16. "I've dedicated my whole life to this. Everything else comes second. But I wouldn't want to do it any other way."

Lloyd's three-goal performance, the first hat trick in a Women's World Cup final, played out in front of a sellout crowd of 53,341 that included U.S. Vice President Joe Biden.

Lloyd, a native of Delran in in Burlington County, was awarded the Golden Ball as player of the tournament. She scored six goals in seven matches during the monthlong tournament, including in every U.S. game in the knockout phase. She raised her international goals total to 69 and joined Carin Jennings in 1991 as the only Americans to win the Golden Ball.

She saved the best for last as she scored twice in a span of about 135 seconds as the U.S. led 2-0 by the fifth minute. Lauren Holiday boosted the lead in the 14th, and two minutes later Lloyd made it 4-0 with an audacious 54-yard, right-footed shot from midfield that sailed over goalkeeper Ayumi Kaihori.

It was the fastest hat trick in World Cup history — men or women — and Lloyd became the first American since Michelle Akers in 1991 to score multiple goals in a World Cup final. The only other hat trick in a World Cup final was when England's Geoff Hurst scored three times against Germany in the men's 1966 final at Wembley.

"Miss Lloyd she always does this to us. In London she scored 2 goals and today she scored 3 goals. We are embarrassed," Japan coach Norio Sasaki said. "But she is an excellent player and I really respect her and admire her."

Lloyd's heroics also caught the eye of America's biggest fan:

After the game Lloyd collapsed to her knees and pumped her fists.

"Speechless. Honestly, I'm so proud of this team," she said. "This doesn't feel real. It hasn't sunk in. So unbelievably proud of every single person on this team. We just made history."

'Highly Destructive' Beetles Found on NJ Ash Trees

0

In the 1960s, the Beatles inspired a "tree-hugging" generation of hippies. Now, New Jersey residents should be on the lookout for a different kind of beetle that are attacking their ash trees.

The emerald ash borer, a "highly destructive" beetle, has been detected in five New Jersey towns across three counties, New Jersey Department of Agriculture officials reported Monday.

“Emerald ash borer is a fast-moving, highly destructive invasive pest, which could lead to the death of ash trees,” said New Jersey Secretary of Agriculture Douglas H. Fisher. “Now that the beetle is in New Jersey and is starting to spread, we ask that towns put plans in place to respond to the beetle.”

The Department of Agriculture encourages municipal officials and residents of Bridgewater and Hillsborough in Somerset County, Westampton in Burlington County and Ewing and West Windsor in Mercer County to visit the New Jersey Emerald Ash Borer website where they can find resources on how to protect their ash trees or what to do with dead or dying trees.

Philadelphia began removing its ash trees in January ahead of the bug's arrival.

The bug, which is native to Asia, is a metallic green color and about a half-inch long. Female emerald ash borers lay eggs on the bark of ash trees and the larvae bore into the bark, cutting off the flow of nutrients, eventually killing the tree. The Department of Agriculture says tree death occurs three to five years after they are first infested.

A private citizen in Bridgewater first spotted the insects in New Jersey in May 2014. The beetles are now present in 25 U.S. states and two Canadian provinces, according to the Department of Agriculture report.

The report says the state has set up traps in ash trees to track EAB’s potential spread in 27 Burlington County towns, three Camden County towns, eight Hunterdon County towns, 10 Mercer County towns, 11 Middlesex County towns, 2 Monmouth County towns, 3 Morris County towns, 15 Somerset County towns and eight Union County towns. The complete list of towns can be found here

The Department of Agriculture recommends not moving any firewood during the infestation and also suggests that residents of affected towns burn all wood that is purchased.

Report signs of the beetle to the Department of Agriculture at 609-406-6939.

Dump Truck Overturns on Route 1 in Delaware

A dump truck driver is recovering after his vehicle overturned on Route 1 in Delaware Monday afternoon.

Theodore Hartle, 53, of Townsend, Delaware was driving a 2004 Mack truck owned by Colonial Trucking, Inc. on Route 1 southbound just north of Route 72 (Wrangle Hill Road) in the center lane around 2:30 p.m. As traffic started to slow in front of him, Hartle hit the brakes and started traveling into the center median of the highway when the left side of his truck struck a wire guardrail, police said.

The crash caused Hartle's truck to overturn onto its left side, spilling approximately 20 tons of dirt into the northbound lanes of Route 1.

Hartle was trapped in his vehicle for around ten minutes until responding firefighters pulled him out. He was transported to Christiana Hospital where he was treated for serious injuries. He was also cited by state troopers for following too closely.

The northbound and southbound lanes of Route 1 were partially closed for about two and a half hours as officials investigated and cleared the crash scene.

Sharks Spotted Off NJ Beaches, Swimmers Called Ashore

Lifeguards in two Jersey Shore towns called swimmers out of the Atlantic Ocean Monday afternoon after spotting sharks close to shore.

Margate City Beach Patrol spotted a fin off the Gladstone Avenue beach just before 1 p.m., officials said.

Lifeguards jumped into a rowboat and went out to investigate the sighting. They told NBC10 the shark appeared to be chasing a large school of fish nearby. They did not say what species it was.

No one was injured. Swimming was allowed again about an hour later.

In Avalon, about 27 miles south, bathers in a six block area — between 26th and 32nd Streets — after lifeguards spotted a small shark in waist-deep water. Swimming was stopped three times over two hours. Beach patrol estimated the shark to be around 4-feet long.

Again, no one was hurt.

The public is on a heightened alert for the fish after a series of attacks in North and South Carolina over the past few weeks.

Shark attacks among humans are extremely rare. Tim Heim, a marine biologist with the Atlantic City Aquarium, told NBC10 last month people are more likely to be struck by lightning than attacked by a shark. There have been no recent shark attacks along the Jersey Shore or Delaware beaches.
