Woman Killed by Falling Tree While Walking to Car

A 21-year-old community college student and a beloved sister to two siblings died at a hospital where she was a student intern after she was crushed by the trunk of a tree that split in half following heavy rain Wednesday, authorities and relatives say.

Michelle Mian was hit by the Norway maple tree while walking to her car outside her home in New Milford sometime before 7:30 a.m., according to police and relatives. Authorities say family members saw the tree lying over four vehicles when they woke up, and Mian's 23-year-old sister, Tabish Mian, said she found her younger sister on the ground outside when she went to check on the cars.

"I just woke up in the morning and came to the car and saw that her body was there on the ground," Tabish Mian said. "And then I saw she wasn't breathing either, and then we called the ambulance immediately."

Mian was pronounced dead shortly after arriving in the emergency room at Holy Name Medical Center, where she had been an intern in the radiology department for the last year. In a statement, the hospital described Mian as an exceptional student from the beginning of her clinical training, saying those who worked with her in the facility were blessed to have known her.

She was heading to a morning class at Bergen Community College, where she was studying radiography, when she died. The youngest of three children, Mian was an electric, warm woman who will be deeply missed, her family says.

"She was the most amazing person in the entire world and my better half, really," Tabish Mian said. "If you met her, you would have known how beautiful, artistic, talented -- she's the kindest person you'll ever meet. ... It's not fair that she's not here with us right now. It's really not."

"When you lose someone as precious and amazing as Michelle, then you hurt like this," the older sister added. "I'm never going to be OK with this. I never will be."

Police say it's not clear what caused the tree to split in half, but Wednesday morning's heavy rains may have played a role.

The severe storms blasted the region with rain and heavy winds early Wednesday, causing flash flooding in some places.

NJSP Denounces Controversial Gun Cell Phone Case

"It’s something we have to deal with, but don’t want to deal with."

Those are the words from Sgt. Jeff Flynn of the New Jersey State Police referring to a controversial cell phone case that looks exactly like a handgun.

Sgt. Flynn told NBC10 that while his troopers haven’t encountered the cell phone case, he said they are trained to handle difficult situations that may arise.

According to Sgt. Flynn, his priority is training the public and educating them that the cell phone could create an unnecessary dangerous situation.

“It’s not a good idea. It looks real, and it could put people’s lives in danger,” Sgt. Flynn explained.

While he acknowledged that the product is not illegal, Sgt. Flynn would advise consumers to avoid buying that particular cell phone case.

“We very publicly advise people not to use product, not to buy the product. It could put friends and family in danger.”

The case, which is used to protect smartphones, looks eerily similar to a handgun and has a replica handle and trigger. In one photo, the cell phone is tucked into an individual’s back pocket and appears to be a handgun with the butt of the gun hanging out.

1 Year Later: Deadly Food Truck Blast

One year ago Wednesday a food truck exploded in Philadelphia's Feltonville neighborhood leaving sending debris dozens of feet away and eventually claiming the life of a mother and daughter while injuring 10 others.

In the months that followed food truck regulation became a hot topic in city government while a lawsuit about the blast was filed.

This is how NBC10 covered the story in the hours after the July, 2014 blast.

A propane tank on a Philadelphia food truck exploded Tuesday afternoon engulfing a busy street in a fireball. A mother and her teenage daughter were severely burned and 10 others were injured.

The La Parrillada Chapina food truck was parked along 3rd Street near Wyoming Avenue in the city's Feltonville section when around 5:30 p.m. the rear left propane tank ignited, Philadelphia Police said. The force of the blast sent the metal tank flying 50 feet into the backyard of a home as flames shot 200 feet into the air.

Surveillance video showed the intensity of the explosion and how fire engulfed both cars and people along the street.

Olga Galdemez, 42, and her 17-year-old daughter, Jaylin Landaverry, were working inside the truck when the tank blew. They suffered major burns across much of their bodies, family members told NBC10.com on Wednesday. Bystanders were also burnt and hit with debris.

"I turned around and saw the fire coming toward me," said Latoya Page. She suffered first degree burns to the left side of her body. "I fell, got back up and started running again."

Nicole Ellis lives nearby and ran outside after the blast rocked her house to find walking wounded.

"A girl was walking by from the nail salon and her whole back got sprayed with debris," Ellis said. "She was screaming all the way up the street, 'I'm on fire! I want my mom! I want my mom!' And then a man sitting on his porch actually got caught with fire as well. It was pretty bad."

Ellis said once she realized what had happened, she grabbed her phone and called 911 for help.

"I was screaming and yelling on the phone," Ellis said. "I started panicking, because the lady was just sitting there and she was on fire. You could see the fire coming from her body."

Other witnesses said one person was blown from inside the truck.

Shaquille Glover, who lives with Ellis, told NBC10.com what he heard was almost as horrific as what he saw.

"The sounds of the screams," Glover said. "I'll never forget that."

Glover was about to go inside his home on Wyoming when he heard the blast.

"I heard a loud boom like a bomb," Glover said. "The propane splashed all the way across the street on a pole. That's why the pole was on fire and people that were walking by got burned. A lady got burned on her back. Another lady got burned on her face. It was just the sounds of the screams. There was a good two minutes of screams before the cops even came."

SEPTA Police officers stationed across the street quickly ran over to the scene to help after feeling the explosion. Responding firefighters were able to control the flames.

"We noticed that somebody was sitting at the table still that was burned, but the smoke was just going past her and getting to us," Glover said. "They said they couldn't touch her because she was burned. Two minutes later, they grabbed her and put her in the ambulance."

Five of the 12 victims -- the mother and daughter, a 23-year-old man, a 27-year-old woman and 13-year-old girl -- remain hospitalized.

The 42-year-old and 17-year-old are both in critical condition at Temple University Hospital. The 23-year-old woman and 13-year-old were both upgraded from critical to stable. Police say the 23-year-old suffered second and third-degree burns to her entire body. The eight other victims were treated and released.

Wyoming between 3rd and 4th streets was blocked off for hours before reopening shortly before 11 p.m. The backyard where the propane landed is being treated as a crime scene.

The Philadelphia Police Bomb Squad, East Detective Division and the Philadelphia Fire Marshal's Office are all investigating to determine the cause of the explosion.

A 6-month-old child was placed in a new home after Montgomery County authorities said the child’s mother shook the baby to the point of hospitalization.

Tykia Fitch called 911 on Sept. 10 to report her baby boy had become unresponsive inside their home on W 5th Street in Lansdale, said Lansdale Police.

Medics rushed the child to Grandview Hospital before transferring the boy to the Children’s Hospital of Pennsylvania in critical condition. Doctors at CHOP determined the boy’s injuries matched those of shaken baby syndrome. So the child was placed in another household by Children Youth Services, said Lansdale Police.

On Tuesday, a district judge arraigned Fitch on multiple counts of aggravated assault, simple assault, reckless endangerment and child endangerment. The 35-year-old mother was sent to county jail after being unable to post $100,000 bail.

30 Rock Lights Up With New Comcast Name

One of New York City’s most popular skyscrapers, 30 Rockefeller Plaza, lit up Wednesday evening with a new corporate name: the Comcast Building.

The rooftop signs on the 70-story building replace the General Electric initials and add the company’s logo and the NBC Peacock logo to the New York City skyline. It's the first time that the iconic peacock has appeared on top of the television network’s historic headquarters.

The day is historically significant for NBCUniversal. On July 1, 1941, 30 Rockefeller Plaza was home to the first commercial television broadcast, with WNBC, then called WNBT, offering a lineup that included a Brooklyn Dodgers versus Philadelphia Phillies baseball game and Lowell Thomas reporting the news from Studio 3H.

This is the third name for the building, which is nicknamed 30 Rock. It was called the RCA building beginning in 1937, after the company that founded NBC. It was then renamed for GE in 1988. GE created the Radio Corporation of America in 1919, owned it until 1930 and reacquired it in 1986.

Comcast bought GE’s stake in NBCUniversal in 2013.

“I remember when it said RCA up there,” said Michael Miscione, the Manhattan borough president. “The fact that they’re bringing GE down is just one step in a many decade evolution of the signage on the building."

The new signs use custom, energy-efficient LED lights that mimic the exposed neon look of the building’s previous signs.

The Comcast letters on the north and south sides are 12 feet high, topped by an 11-foot-tall NBC Peacock. The peacock on the western facade is 18 feet high.

The Comcast name is also on new granite stones at the entrances to the 850-foot building.

Conceived by John D. Rockefeller Jr as a “city within a city,” Rockefeller Center was constructed during the Great Depression, according to the center’s website. It officially opened in 1933 and came to feature the annual Christmas tree and the ice-skating rink.

The Art Deco lobby of 30 Rockefeller Plaza is decorated with murals by European artists Frank Brangwyn and Jose Maria Sert.

A New Jersey man was indicted Wednesday for murder and the desecration of human remains in connection to the death of a woman whose body was found stuffed inside a suitcase.

Steven Stallworth, 28, of Pleasantville, was indicted by the Atlantic County Grand Jury for the murder of Tara Alicea, 30, of Monroeville, New Jersey.

On January 5, 2014, around 1:30 p.m., a hunter found Alicea’s remains in the woods behind the Shore Mall site near Broadway Avenue in Egg Harbor Township. The hunter called police in Atlantic County and officers responded to the scene.

Investigators identified Alicea as the victim after releasing photographs of tattoos on her body. The State Medical Examiner’s Office determined Alicea died from asphyxiation by strangulation and her death was ruled a homicide.

The Atlantic County Prosecutor’s Office Major Crimes Unit, Egg Harbor Township Police, Pleasantville Police and the FBI conducted an investigation and ultimately identified Stallworth as the murder suspect. He was arrested without incident on August 5, 2014.

Stallworth was charged and lodged in the Atlantic County Justice Facility where he has remained in lieu of $2,000,000 full cash bail.
