Pope Francis’ Itinerary for Philly Visit

0
0

Men behind bars and a group of select Catholics will likely get closer to Pope Francis than most of the 1.5 to 2 million people expected to gather in Philadelphia for his September visit.

The pope’s official itinerary for his first trip to the U.S. was released Tuesday morning by the Vatican and includes stops to visit people and places in sync with the Pope’s efforts to engage people at a level of behavior he believes is actionable, namely mercy and compassion.

Highlighted stops include a school in New York’s Harlem neighborhood, sharing time with poor migrant workers at a Charity Center in D.C. and a visit to Philadelphia’s Curran-Fromhold prison, which currently houses more than 6,800 inmates. On average, about 30,000 men are processed through the facility each year, according to the City of Philadelphia’s website.

In addition to the already publicized and highly-anticipated Sunday Mass on the Ben Franklin Parkway, Philadelphia’s visit includes a papal Mass at the Basilica of Sts. Peter and Paul shortly after Pope Francis arrives Saturday, September 26.

The Mass is an invitation-only event for select Catholics from parishes around the region, according to a source working closely with the Archdiocese. We expect to learn more about the selection criteria for that audience later today when WMOF leaders answers questions about the itinerary.

Philadelphia will be the final stop of the Pope’s U.S. tour, although as the host city for the World Meeting of Families (WMOF) Philly prompted Francis’ first-ever visit to the states. Pope Benedict made the commitment to come to Philadelphia and then decided to make the rare move only one Pope before him had ever made – he retired, leaving Francis to make good on the expectation.

The WMOF is held every three years in a different part of the world. Traditionally, the pope takes part in the closing event -- the Festival of Families -- where Pope Francis will interact on an outdoor stage along The Parkway with a handful of families from all over the world, hearing their testimonials or statements of faith.

FULL ITINERARY FOR POPE FRANCIS:

Law Enforcement Angered by Controversial Cell Phone Case

The Ocean County Prosecutor’s Office is decrying a controversial cell phone case that appears to look like a handgun.

In a post on their Facebook page, the cover was labeled as “not a cool product or a good idea.”

The case, which is used to protect smartphones, looks eerily similar to a handgun and has a replica handle and trigger. In one photo, the cell phone is tucked into an individual’s back pocket and appears to be a handgun with the butt of the gun hanging out.

On the Facebook post for the prosecutor’s office, it said “a police officers job is hard enough, without having to make a split second decision in the dark of night when someone decides without thinking to pull this out while stopped for a motor vehicle violation.”

The Facebook post has certainly generated a ton of buzz, with nearly 800 comments and almost 3,700 shares on their page.

Rookie Officers Find Car of Elderly Woman Who Had Throat Slashed

The morning after an elderly woman was found dead with her throat slashed inside her East Mt. Airy home, two rookie officers walking the beat spotted the woman's missing car, Philadelphia Police said.

Regina Brunner's son found her bludgeoned in her bed just before 11 a.m. Monday inside the first floor bedroom of a rancher-style home along the 300 block of Roumfort Road in East Mt. Airy, police said.

"There is nothing sadder than seeing an 85-year-old female who cannot defend herself -- who's inside of her house -- someone either was let in or forced their way in and beat her and stabbed her to death," said Philadelphia Police Homicide Division Capt. James Clark. "It's very sad, it's very tragic."

On Tuesday, two officers -- on just their second unsupervised shift -- recovered a 2007 silver Toyota Corolla -- with disabled plates that match the victim's -- along the 3100 block of Stillman Street in North Philadelphia -- that's more than 6 miles from the victim's home. A neighbor said they believed the car was dumped there sometime after midnight.

Police also recovered a wiped-down knife in a church playground close to the crime scene though they have not yet revealed whether it was the same weapon used in the murder. Both the car and the knife will be processed for DNA and fingerprints.

Sources close to the investigation said it appeared robbery was the motive for the attack. There were no signs of forced entry and the home didn't appear to be ransacked, police said.

"Hopefully we will get to the bottom of it very quickly," said Clark.

It appeared that Brunner's ATM card was used at least twice Sunday by more than one person, multiple sources with knowledge of the investigation told NBC10.

No word yet on what might have been found in the car. Police searched the area for possible surveillance video.

Anyone with information on the killing and theft is asked to contact Philadelphia Police.

Severe Storms Bring Funnel Clouds, Leave Hail, Flooding

0
0

As temperatures pushed into the 80s Tuesday afternoon, funnel clouds hovered over parts of the Philadelphia region as the National Weather Service issued tornado warnings in areas north and west of the city and thunderstorm watches for much of the region as storms left hail and flooding.

The National Weather Service issued earlier tornado warnings for parts of Berks, Chester, Delaware Lehigh, Montgomery and Northampton counties that expired but not before reports of possible funnel clouds in the areas of West Chester, Trexlertown, Morgantown, Parkesburg and other areas in Pennsylvania and also reports of large hail -- more than 1 inch in diameter -- in Chester, Lehigh and Northampton counties. Whitehall Township in Lehigh County also declared a state of emergency due to storm damage that included at least one roof falling down.

A Severe Thunderstorm Watch covered Philadelphia and all points north and west in Pennsylvania as well as northern Delaware and western South Jersey through 8 p.m. Severe storm warnings ended at 4:30 p.m. A Severe Thunderstorm Warning was also issued for Philadelphia until 9:15 p.m. after heavy rain, wind and hail once again struck the area.

There was also flash flooding in Berks, Lehigh and Northampton counties. Flooding already submerged cars at SEPTA's Prospect Park Station in Delaware County and there were reports of flooding in Coplay, Lehigh County.

Thousands of customers lost power in the area with PPL Electric at one point reporting nearly 11,000 outages in Lehigh and Northampton counties and First Energy reporting more than 4,000 outages in Northampton County alone.

The weather also caused delays of more than 30 minutes at Philadelphia International Airport so check flight status before your flight.

The storm also forced Wawa Welcome America organizers to cancel a screening of Annie planned for Dilworth Park Tuesday night.

A Flash Flood Watch remains in effect in areas north and west until 3 a.m. Showers and thunderstorms will move through the region overnight and some showers are possible Wednesday morning before conditions dry out. Another thunderstorm in the afternoon or evening is possible however.

If you are under a severe weather warning take cover as quickly as possible, ideally in a basement or interior of a building.
