The Camden County Police Department, which prides itself on serving the community, certainly has made some new young friends in the towns they serve.

Members of the department recently handed out footballs to youngsters throughout several neighborhoods.

In one picture posted on the department’s official Twitter, Officers Tyrrel Bagby and Chris Slimm are shown taking a picture with two youngsters, including one who is wearing one of the officer’s police hats.

Bagby has gotten to know the children by playing football with them. Over time, the kids wanted to spend more time with the officer, said police.

In another picture, a young boy is shown posing with one of the officers wearing his police hat and holding a brand new football in a box. The boy is smiling from ear to ear. A northwestern New Jersey couple has pleaded guilty to child neglect for exposing two young children to numerous decomposed animals at their home.

Warren County prosecutors will recommend that 36-year-old Chad Lloyd and 23-year-old Kimberly Brown receive probation _ with special conditions _ when they are sentenced Oct. 2. The couple also pleaded guilty to animal cruelty charges during Friday's court hearings.

Authorities have said "numerous animals" in various states of decomposition were found at the couple's Independence Township home in April. They were discovered by authorities who had gone there to return several pigs that were found running loose in their neighborhood.

In entering their pleas, Lloyd and Brown said the animals died over the winter, many outdoors but some inside the home. The children, ages 4 and 10, had access to a work room with some animals, including a dead goat.

Mayor in Town Hard-Hit by Outages Wants Action

“It’s time Governor Christie paid attention to New Jersey’s west coast.”

That's the message of a Gloucester County mayor of a town still struggling to recover from Tuesday's heavy storms hoped to get out at a news conference Sunday.

Greenwich Township Mayor George W. Shivery, Jr. was joined by members of town council and residents who remained without power after six days to demand that Gov. Chris Christie help the township and surrounding communities get the power back. Among those appearing with the mayor were emergency responders, police and firefighters who worked around the clock to help residents.

"I can't thank each and everyone of them enough," said Shivery. "We are Gibbstown strong."

Nearly 280,000 utility customers were without power during the height of the storms, and roughly 9,000 customers still had no service as of late Sunday night, mainly in Gloucester and Camden counties.

Atlantic City Electric admitted that a soggy Saturday slowed restoration efforts in the Greenwich area. Hundreds of customers in Gibbstown, Paulsboro and nearby towns remained in the dark early Sunday evening -- in total nearly 8,000 customers in the county were without power.

Despite the call by the Republican mayor for Christie to act, the governor already seemed to have a timetable in place.

“Based on ACE's commitment this afternoon, we expect outages to be down to 1 percent or fewer of the affected customers by tomorrow morning, and for full restoration shortly thereafter," said Christie. “While significant progress has been made in restoring power to many businesses, households, and critical infrastructure in South Jersey after last week’s storm, there are still too many families who are dealing with outages. I thank these families for their patience and resilience during this period.”

Part of the AC Electric plan included calling in 155 more personnel to tackle outages on Saturday but due to the rain and wind another 16,000 homes wound up with the power out. About 1,600 total workers attacked the downed wires and trees Sunday.

"We share our customers’ frustration that additional poor weather has prevented us from getting power back on as quickly as we had expected for those final customers," said Atlantic City Electric regional vice president Susan Coan. "We are working as quickly and safely as possible, and we won’t slow that pace until service is restored to the last customer.”

Christie's office said that the state will decide to ask for federal aide once all assessments of damage are done.

Multiple people are dead after a plane crashed into a house Sunday in Plainville, Massachusetts.

The Beechcraft BE36, which took off from Lancaster Airport in Pennsylvania, went down on Bridle Path around 5:45 p.m.

Somehow, the family of four inside the house was able to escape safely.

Investigators say everyone on board the plane was killed. Massachusetts State Police say two adults and a child were killed. However, the office of Massachusetts Fire Marshal Stephen Coan was not ready to confirm that number. Fire officials believe at least three people died in the crash.

Firefighters could be seen pulling out a pet cat from the burning home, later turning it over to the homeowner.

The roof of the house was gone, with part of the plane remaining near the driveway Sunday night.

"I have to say that while we suffered great tragedy here today, with the death of the occupants of this plane, the miracle today is that four occupants of that home that was severely damaged by fire - a very rapidly spreading fire - were able to safely escape," said Coan. "They lost a lot of personal possessions, but they're all safe tonight."

The cause of the crash is still unknown. The Federal Aviation Administration and National Transportation Safety Board are investigating.

New Executive Leads Phillies

The Philadelphia Phillies have hired Andy MacPhail to be their next President of Baseball Operations, the team announced in a news conference Monday. MacPhail will assume the role in October following the 2015 season.

Effective immediately, MacPhail will serve as a Special Assistant to current president Pat Gillick until he succeeds Gillick in October.

"He's been around the game for a long time, and four or five heads is better than one. Certainly, I'm going to be looking [to MacPhail]," Gillick said.

"I am extremely flattered," MacPhail said at the press conference. "The game has probably evolved two times over since [I last worked in baseball], so I'm very grateful for the opportunity to spend three months with Pat to get me up to speed about how the game and the organization has evolved."

A two-time World Series champion, MacPhail has a great reputation when it comes to leading baseball teams.

“An executive's past performance is indicative of future success,” said Phillies ownership partner John Middleton.

Most recently, MacPhail was President of Baseball Operations of the Baltimore Orioles, a position he held from the 2007 season until 2011. Previously, MacPhail led the Minnesota Twins to two titles in 1987 and 1991 as the team’s general manager. He then served as president and CEO of the Chicago Cubs from 1994 to 2006.

“My three main functions are to read, to watch and to listen," MacPhail said.

MacPhail will be tasked with turning around a Phillies team that currently owns the worst record in baseball.

"Any team that devotes itself to a rebuild is rewarded in the end,” he said. "I’ve been known as deliberate and patient, and I think that’s because I want to collect as much information as I possibly can. The way the game is constructed today, everyone’s got a shot. It’s going to happen, it’s just a question of when it will happen.”

The move is the most recent in what is expected to be a flurry of changes atop the organization. Last Friday, former manager Ryne Sandberg announced his resignation. The team is also expected to make a decision about whether to move on from General Manager Rubén Amaro, Jr. in the near future.

MacPhail comes from a family of baseball executives — his grandfather, Larry, was a longtime front office member with the Cincinnati Reds, Brooklyn Dodgers and New York Yankees and his father, Lee, served as President of the American League after nearly two decades as a general manager.

As Crashes Spike, Google Alerting Drivers of Railroad Crossings

$

Every railroad crossing in our region will soon be plotted out on Google’s Maps application as federal regulators work to reduce a recent spike in accidents.

The Federal Railroad Administration announced Monday they provided data for the 225,000 crossings nationwide to the tech giant. Google will integrate each location into Maps and provide visual and audio alerts to drivers while using the app’s navigation feature.

“Let’s say it’s dark on an unfamiliar road or just not sure about where you’re going, it will alert you, just like it would alert you to a right turn or a left turn…,” Sarah Feinberg, Acting Administrator at the Federal Railroad Administration, told NBC10.

“It could just be a game changer for safety for drivers and passengers who may lose situational awareness, who aren’t familiar with where they are, tourists even, or those who are driving at night. This is a huge safety feature,” Feinberg said.

Across the Delaware and Lehigh Valleys, there are 2,188 railroad crossings on public and private land. Nationwide, Feinberg said, railroad crossing crashes have jumped 9 percent over last year — with 267 people killed and 832 injured.

An elderly New Jersey man was nearly killed when his SUV got stuck on tracks at a crossing in Newark, Delaware on June 21. He was pulled to safety by two police officers moments before a freight train ran down the vehicle.

In Pennsylvania, which has the most operating railroads in the nation at nearly five dozen, there were 37 crashes at railroad crossings involving a train in 2014, according to PennDOT. The year before, there were 19.

Drivers are 20 times more likely to be killed in a crash involving a train than another vehicle, rail safety organization Operation Lifesaver found.

“There are a lot of grade crossings where there aren’t gates, there aren’t flashing lights. It may be a private railroad crossing and think about driving at night in an unfamiliar neighborhood … this is one more way for drivers to know where they are at any given moment,” Feinberg said.

Maps will only show railroad crossings. It will not include real-time train data that could alert a driver about a train approaching a crossing. Feinberg said officials aren’t interested in adding in that information as it could promote the idea that a driver could beat a train before it arrives.

Google is working on adding the crossings to its maps now, but it’s unclear when users will start seeing them. Feinberg said the FRA has also been discussing adding the data to applications from Apple, Garmin and Tom Tom.
