What Caused the Beautiful Sunset After the Storm?

What caused the beautiful sunset over the area following severe storms that rolled through? NBC10 Chief Meteorologist Glenn "Hurricane" Schwartz said it could be hail.

NBC10 was flooded with amazing photos of pink, orange and even yellow sunset skies over Pennsylvania, New Jersey and Delaware following a line of strong storms Tuesday evening.

NBC10 Chief Meteorologist Glenn “Hurricane” Schwartz said the striking orange sky that followed the storm was created by the way the setting sun reflected off the heavy clouds as the storm moved out.

“The clouds are so dark, and they may have hail in them,” Schwartz said. “The sun reflects off the hailstones.”

Schwartz said the timing was key for the stunning skies. “At 2 in the afternoon, we wouldn’t have seen that,” he said.

Ovarian cancer is the 5th-leading cancer killer among women, but Samantha Lockwood and the rest of the HERA Women's Cancer Foundation are hoping to help combat it. Lockwood, the Board President of HERA, is hoping to raise awareness about the symptoms of Ovarian Cancer through an event in Washington, D.C. Around 20 people are expected to make the trip from Philly for the Climb4Life event. Another fundraiser will be held at the Fox and Hound bar/restaurant at 15th and Spruce Streets on Thursday. 10% of the proceeds from the entire day's sales will be donated to HERA, and the HERA team will be in attendance from 6-9 with some additional information about ovarian cancer. Ovarian cancer's symptoms often compare to symptoms of IBS, such as bloating or urinary symptoms. Lockwood urges anyone who experiences these symptoms for a period of over two weeks to visit their regular doctor but also their gynecologist.

"Hurricane" Talks Tornadoes, Straight-Line Winds

$

After Tuesday's massive storms, the National Weather Service did not immediately hit the streets to determine whether any tornadoes were to blame for the widespread damage in several areas.

NBC10 Chief Meteorologist Glenn "Hurricane" Schwartz said there's a good reason for that: The damage was so widespread there wasn't any one location to pinpoint early on to inspect for evidence of a tornado.

"You can see on the damage reports from yesterday ... there are so many of them, and they're so widespread across the area, so many reports of 70 mph winds, so many reports of multiple trees down, that basically, you don't know where to go to search for any kind of potential tornado," Schwartz said.

"You look at every report, so what are they going to do? Are they going to go to 200 different neighborhoods and look around?" Schwartz explained. "So what they're going to do is they've contacted the local officials, asked them to take a look at the areas that have been damaged the most, and see if there's anything suspicious."

Schwartz said there are usually some telltale signs that indicate whether straight-line winds or a tornado may be the culprit of storm damage.

"With tornadoes, generally you'll have trees blown down in different directions," he said. "With straight-line winds, they'll all be blown down the same way, and sometimes it's obvious it's a straight-line wind, so you don't need to call the Weather Service and have them come out there."

Surveillance video helped Philadelphia Police track down and arrest a man for a car break-in in a section of the city that has seen dozens of cars burglarized in the past month.

Philadelphia Police Chief Inspector Dennis Wilson said the man broke into a Honda along the 900 block of S. 23rd Street in the Graduate Hospital neighborhood earlier this week.

The act was caught on surveillance video and after reviewing the clip, 17th District Officers Madara and Allen identified the man and took him into custody, according to Wilson. The suspect has 36 priors.

"I thought the officers did a great job and I wanted to recognize them for that," Wilson told NBC10 after tweeting praise about the arrest.

Police have been investigating more than 67 car break-ins in the neighborhood — between Washington Avenue and Lombard Street and Broad Street to the Schuylkill River — over the past month.

The suspect, who has not been publicly identified, has only been implicated in the one break-in. Wilson said police are looking into whether he was involved in any others.

A man was killed and three people were injured after a car flew off of the New Jersey Turnpike and landed upside down in a business parking lot Wednesday morning, police said.

Police said a 22-year-old Jersey City man was driving a 2010 Honda Civic southbound on the turnpike in Linden when he lost control of the car, running off the right side of the road, going across a grass embankment and hitting a utility pole and fence before falling upside down into the parking lot on Trmpley Point Road, hitting four parked cars.

There were three passengers in the car, all teenagers who are also from Jersey City, police said. Two of them were ejected.

Those passengers, Jose Cruz, 18, and Richard Donan, 19, were airlifted to University Hospital in Newark. Cruz was pronounced dead at noon, police said.

Donan is critical condition with life-threatening injuries. The third passenger, 14-year-old Christian Donan sustained moderate injuries and is in stable condition at University Hospital.

The driver, Jonathan Donan, was treated for moderate injuries at University Hospital and released.

Baby Pool Closed After Kids Cut During Swims

The Glenside baby pool has been shut down as officials try to determine what is causing children to get cuts to their hands and feet during swims.

Cheltenham Township officials closed the pool along Keswick Avenue Tuesday after a number of parents complained their children were injured.

Township manager Brian Havir tells NBC10 the pool was resurfaced over the summer and they were reaching out to the company to see if the bottom needed to be smoothed out. A slightly rough texture is typically left on the bottom to provide traction and prevent falls, officials said.

The pool will remain closed until the issue is fixed. The adult pool remains open. Havir said there have been no complaints after swims in there.

2-Year-Old Critically Hurt After Being Hit by Car

260K Still Without Power in Wake of Storm

In the aftermath of the severe storms that walloped the region Tuesday evening, power outages continued to affect tens of thousands of people throughout the area Wednesday.

More than 260,000 customers across the region remained without power Wednesday night.

In Philadelphia and its suburbs that included more than 82,300 PECO customers and the power company said service was expected to be restored to most customers by Friday.

For Atlantic City Electric customers, it was a different story: Lendel Jones, a spokeswoman for the company, said that although power had been restored to more than 100,000 customers who were among the 280,000 who lost power at the height of the storm, the company was unsure when service would be fully restored.

Jones said she expected an update with a timeline later Wednesday. At 11 p.m., roughly 150,000 remained in the dark.

More AC Electric customers lost power in Tuesday's storm than in Hurricane Sandy, Jones said. During Sandy, 220,000 lost service, she said, but the severity of the damage to power equipment was much worse, so outages lasted longer.

Both Jones and PECO spokeswoman Deb Yemenijian said additional workers were being brought in from as far away as Ohio to repair damage caused by the storm and restore power.

Jones said AC Electric is working with the Red Cross and the Office of Emergency Management to get ice and water for residents affected by the outages.

Yemenijian urged residents to check on relatives and neighbors during the duration, and to call to report any additional outages, downed power lines or dangerous conditions.

"We want all our customers to be sure to stay safe," she said.

PECO's emergency line for reporting outages, downed power lines and other issues is available 24/7, she added. Customers can call 1-800-841-4141.
