Judge Denies Bail for Man Who Killed His Kids' Mom

A Philadelphia man accused of slashing his girlfriend's throat during an argument while the couple's three young children were in the house has been arrested and charged with her murder.

Police said Gerrell Hall, 28, who was on the run after Brittany Lange Green's June 17 killing, was arrested on Monday. Hall, of Gross Street near Callowhill in West Philadelphia, is charged with murder and related offenses.

A 9-1-1 call the morning of the murder led police to a house on Warnock Street near Rockland, in the city's Logan section. Inside, they found 28-year-old Green, who worked as a housekeeper at a Center City hotel, suffering from several stab wounds to the neck.

The couple's three children -- ages 6, 8 and 10 -- were in the house at the time of their mother's murder, police said at the time. Hall took the children to his mother's house after the killing and then fled, investigators said. They were not harmed, but Homicide Capt. James Clark said police believe they heard their parents' argument and their mother's violent killing.

Clark described the pair's relationship as "tumultuous."

Green's mother said last week that her daughter had tried to leave the abusive relationship with Hall more than once.

"She was a loving mom and a very hard worker," Linda Green said. "She tried several times to leave her attacker, and she was just a victim of abuse."

Hall is being held without bail and is scheduled to appear for a preliminary hearing July 8.

Philly Loses 'Soul Train' Status

Oakland didn't just steal the Athletics from Philadelphia. Now they've taken Philly's Guinness World Record for longest 'Soul Train'-style dance and made it their own as well.

According to Inside Bay Area, 337 people came to DeFremery Park in Oakland on Saturday morning to participate in the record-breaking event, created by the Friends of DeFremery Center, which designs activities at the park for low-income citizens.

The dance required all participants to remain dancing nonstop while individual dancers made their way through the dance line one by one. The entire event took about four hours.

Every dancer got a T-shirt, and there was a fundraiser to help kids go to summer camp as well, so the event was also for a good cause.

Philadelphia set the record with a 298-person long Soul Train in 2012, and the record stood until this past weekend.

Guinness' website says Arizona holds the record, but officials said that event was not certified and Oakland holds the official record.

A Philadelphia man was arrested Tuesday after police say he was caught on camera Monday groping a teenage girl inside a grocery store where he worked.

Eliazar Polanco, 37, of Mascher Street near Lehigh Avenue, surrendered to officers in North Philadelphia's 25th District, police said. Polanco faces charges including felony contact with a minor, corruption of minors and indecent assault.

In a shocking, minutes-long surveillance video of the assault -- captured on cameras inside the store -- a man can be seen first stepping behind a young woman and putting his hand up her skirt. Later, the man is seen in the video again approaching the victim from behind, kneeling on the floor next to the girl and repeatedly putting his hand under her skirt.

Police said the 14-year-old victim reported she was in the grocery store on 18th Street ner Cumberland just after 9 a.m. when she was assaulted.

Polanco was arraigned Tuesday afternoon and a judge set his bail at $25,000, according to court records. Court documents indicated that he had not posted bail late Tuesday afternoon.

Car Flipped, Walls Damaged at Deptford Mall After Violent Storm

A car was flipped and pieces of the Deptford Mall's exterior were ripped off as a violent storm, described by witnesses as a tornado, sprinted across South Jersey Tuesday night.

"It was going a circular motion and it was coming straight towards us and that's when everything started happening," witness Blake Clemmer said.

A blue coupe was left on its windshield in the parking lot outside Macy's. Shoppers tell NBC10 they were ushered into the department store's basement to ride out the storm. There were no reports of injuries.

"It sounded like a freight train was coming down the road and lights flickered a few times and then just darkness," Max Baumle, another witness, said.

Debris broke the windows of several other vehicles parked outside the mall located along Clements Bridge Road in Deptford, New Jersey.

The mall suffered significant damage as well. Sheet metal wall panels near a mall entrance were left crumpled on the ground outside. Yellow fiberglass insulation panels dotted the parking lot and were left stuck under cars.

On the mall's roof, solar panels were peeled back like a band-aid.

A Friendly's restaurant down the road from the mall had part of its roof pulled off.

The National Weather Service will decide Wednesday whether to travel to Deptford to investigate whether a tornado caused the damage. Winds were clocked at more than 70 mph at the height of the storm.

Mall officials said they will reopen for normal business hours Wednesday.

A house under construction in Philadelphia collapsed under the fury of a strong storm Tuesday afternoon sending four workers to the hospital, police said.

The three-story house — that was in the process of being framed out — tumbled down around 6 p.m. at Delaware and E. Columbia Avenues in the Fishtown section of the city. The collapse happened as winds gusted to more than 70 mph in the area.

Police said the workers were taken to Temple University Hospital and Hahnemann University Hospital with nonlife threatening injuries.

The violent storm left behind major damage in towns across the area. Trees landed on houses in Delaware County, Pennsylvania injuring two people and winds flipped a car outside the Deptford Mall.

As Wednesday morning wore on, some suspended mass transit services began to be restored in the wake of Tuesday evening's massive storms that pummeled the region.

PATCO service in South Jersey, though, remained completely suspended about 10 a.m. It is expected to remain stopped until at least mid-morning after the storm cut power to the transit system. Officials said PSE&G crews are working to restore power to the system.

NJ Transit is accepting PATCO Freedom Cards and tickets during the service interruption.

Service in some other areas began to be restored throughout the morning.

SEPTA bus routes 37, 109, 113, 114, 117, 118 and 119 resumed service to Chester Transportation Center. The center lost power as a result of the storms and was shut down earlier Wednesday morning.

On SEPTA Regional Rail, service was restored to the Fox Chase Line and the Paoli/Thorndale Line. Service remained suspended on the Media/Elwyn Line.

Other Regional Rail lines are running, but SEPTA said to expect up to15-minute delays.

On SEPTA's Norristown High Speed Line, service between Radnor and Norristown Transportation Center remained suspended. Service is operating every 15 minutes to Radnor Station only, according to SEPTA's website. Inbound passengers at Radnor were advised that they must board trains from the outbound platform.

Due to a power outage, Chester Transportation Center is out of service. Numerous bus lines are detoured due to downed trees and power outages.

SEPTA advised riders to check SEPTA.org for status updates.

Amtrak was expected to operate all scheduled service Wednesday, but officials said eastbound Keystone Service trains could expect delays of 30 to 45 minutes in the morning.

Storm Leads to State of Emergency in Delco

Delaware County officials have declared a state of emergency after Tuesday's severe storms crippled several municipalities throughout the area.

Nearly all of Middletown Township remained without power about 7 a.m., and massive swaths of roadway in the municipality were impassable, covered with downed trees and electrical wires.

Nearby, the borough of Brookhaven declared a state of emergency, as the storm left major damage along Edgemont Street, one of its main roads.

A chief meteorologist at the National Weather Service said Wednesday morning that so far, they have not been requested to assess damage in Delco to determine if a tornado struck the area. It appeared that straight-line winds were to blame for the major damage, but the NWS official said that could potentially change later today as townships and boroughs continue to assess the damage left behind.

Verizon Cell Phone Users Experiencing Calling Issue

The fierce line of wind and thunderstorms that moved through the region Tuesday night is apparently impacting cell phone service for Verizon customers.

Representatives with the Chester County Department of Emergency Services said that Verizon is currently experiencing a service outage in Pennsylvania, New Jersey and Delaware.

Calls made from Verizon cell phones to a landline are receiving a busy signal, this includes calls to 9-1-1. Calls made from Verizon cell phones will only work when dialing another Verizon cell phone customer.

The New Castle County Division of Public Safety issued a similar advisement to its residents in Delaware and asked anyone who was having problems to use a different means of communication if they have a true emergency.

It is believed that the strong storms that rolled through the region Tuesday night are responsible for the service interruption.

Verizon is aware of the issue and they are working to restore service as soon as possible.
