NJ Sanitation Worker Unnerved After Discovery of Noose in Truck

A worker with the Atlantic County Utilities Authority says he is scared for his life after finding a noose hanging off the seat of a garbage truck he was assigned to.

Scott Henry says he made the discovery June 3 and reported it to his supervisors, who investigated the incident.

However, Henry said police were not contacted for nearly two weeks.

Henry told NBC10 he has been on edge ever since finding the noose.

Henry said it is “very offensive” and that he’s taking the discovery “very seriously.”

The authority's president says the ACUA did not contact police immediately because the incident did not reach that level at that point in time.

Egg Harbor Township Police confirm they are investigating the case as a bias crime.

So far, no arrests have been made.

Henry told NBC10 the incident has taken such an emotional toll on him that he’s taking a six-to-eight- week stress leave starting on Monday.

New Jersey Gas Prices Rise Again

Motorists continue to see higher prices at the pumps in New Jersey.

AAA Mid-Atlantic says the average price of a gallon of regular gas in the state on Friday was $2.62, up 2 cents from last week. But that's still much lower than the price from a year ago, when motorists were paying $3.59.

This marks the fifth straight week that pump prices have risen in New Jersey.

The national average price on Friday was $2.80, up a penny from last week. But that's also much lower than the national average from a year ago, when motorists were paying $3.68.

Analysts say pump prices will likely drop in the coming weeks, noting there are abundant crude oil supplies and refineries are completing their seasonal maintenance work.

Two people were killed and a third person was wounded in a shooting at the Cloud 9 nightclub in Passaic, New Jersey, early Saturday, police said.

Police were searching for the gunman, who they say fired shots outside the club around 2:45 a.m. A 22-year-old woman and a 24-year-old man were shot in the chest and later died from their injuries, police said. Another 24-year-old man is at the hospital in critical condition. He was also shot in the chest.

Police and detectives were at the scene searching for evidence Saturday morning.

The gunman remains on the loose, and police say he was wearing a black hat or bandanna and a red shirt with silver lettering.

Police Shoot Knife-Wielding Man After He Stabs Officer

Police shot a man in New Jersey on Saturday morning after he lunged at them with a knife, stabbing one officer and sending her to the hospital.

Police say they received a call about a man with a knife near a Dunkin Donuts in East Orange. When East Orange officers arrived they asked the man to drop the knife, but he refused and walked away down Central Avenue.

Officers followed the knife-wielding man by car and on foot for about a quarter of a mile to Orange. At Central Avenue and Oakwood Avenue, they asked him to drop his knife again, but he refused, so one officer sprayed him with pepper spray. But instead of putting down the knife, the man lunged at police, stabbing a female officer in the shoulder.

The stabbed officer and another officer fired their guns six times around 9 a.m., hitting the man an unknown number of times.

The officer and the suspect were both taken to area hospitals, according to Essex County Prosecutor’s Office Chief of Detectives Anthony Ambrose. The suspect was listed in critical condition at University Hospital. The officer who was stabbed was treated at an area hospital and released.

Police were still at the scene Saturday afternoon investigating. A Speedway gas station at the intersection was blocked with police cars and police tape.

Brakes Fail, Street Dept. Truck Splits Utility Pole Into 3

A Philadelphia Street Department worker claimed his brakes failed causing his dump truck to splinter a utility pole into three pieces Saturday morning.

The crash along Umbria Street at Parker Avenue – that’s right next to the parking lot for SEPTA’s Ivy Ridge Regional Rail Station – knocked down power lines around 9:25 a.m. then came to rest near a tree across the street. PECO didn’t reveal how many, if any, customers lost power.

The wreck left the city worker behind the wheel of the dump truck with some cuts and bruises, said Philadelphia Police. He told investigators that his brakes gave way before he slammed into the pole.

The force of the wreck left the front of the truck badly damaged and caused a wheel to bend at a 45-degree angle.

The crash caused traffic troubles in the area as crews worked to clear the scene.

An unemployed teenager broke into a Jersey Shore surf shop and stole hundreds of dollars, said authorities in South Jersey.

Investigators with the Wildwood Police Department Patrol and Detective Divisions arrested the Middle Township man on Friday and charged Daily with third-degree burglary and theft. A judge then sent Daily, who is unemployed, to the Cape May county jail after he was unable to post $35,000 bail.

Weather TForces Evacuation of Firefly Grounds

Seek shelter.

That’s what the organizers of the Firefly Music Festival told concertgoers Saturday night as severe weather threatened the Woodlands in Dover, Delaware.

Organizers cleared the festival grounds just before 10 p.m. as headliners Kings of Leon were set to take the main stage sending festivalgoers a message about "storms heading our way."

The cancellation occurred as the remnants of Bill threatened the festival grounds where many concertgoers camp out in tents. Organizers urged people to take down any tents and canopies at their campsites and refer to festival weather FAQs as a Severe Thunderstorm Warning hit the area.

Early Sunday, Firefly announced they were canceling late-night performances, including Steve Aoki. All Sunday shows would go on as scheduled starting after noon, said organizers.

On the Firefly Festival Twitter handle, it said that Aoki (Sunday @ 230 PM) and The Chainsmokers (Sunday @ 11 PM) were the only acts canceled Saturday night who were able to reschedule for Sunday.

Service Dog Keeps Woman With Epilepsy Safe

0

Dogs are commonly referred as man's best friend but for one local woman her best friend is keeping her safe.

Philadelphia resident Erin Orso has epilepsy and her seizures have worsened as she has aged. Service dogs have been instrumental to her everyday life for the last 13 years.

Now with her second dog, Mork, from Paws With A Cause (PAWS), Orso is less anxious than ever about her condition.

“The big thing is that [Mork] keeps me safe,” Orso said. “Whether I’m alone at home or out in public… he keeps me safe. He alleviates the anxiety of being alone and waiting for a seizure to hit. If a seizure happens, I’m not alone anymore.”

PAWS, the nation’s leading assistance dog program, is hosting a fundraiser called Ability Day on June 23 that will raise money to train more service animals in order to meet high demand. The fundraiser aims to raise $1 million in just 24 hours.

PAWS dogs are individually trained to meet the specific needs of their partners. In addition to existing clients requesting new dogs, the organization faces more than 2,000 new requests each year, and that number is growing.

Mork, like all PAWS dogs, is trained to respond to his partner in the event of a medical emergency. In Orso’s case, if she has a seizure, Mork will retrieve either Orso’s husband or, if Orso is alone, her Vagas Nerve Stimulator (VNS) magnet and lay next to her while she recovers.

“Mork is what I need. Just having him by my side helps me recover from seizures faster,” Orso said.

PAWS trains dogs to help people with physical disabilities, hearing problems, and seizure disorders. The organization also specializes in training service dogs for children with autism.

“Having a service dog] has enabled me to be much more outgoing,” Orso said. “I’ve been able to explore the world. I didn’t think I’d be able to do that, but Mork has enabled me to do it.”
