It seems every time a smartphone video of a police officer goes viral, it shows brutality or questionable actions by the officer.

But as the video Bernice Daniels recorded Wednesday shows, "all cops are not mean and nasty."

Daniels was waiting at a stoplight at 21st and Diamond in North Philadelphia Wednesday when she saw a Philadelphia Police officer pull his SUV over to help two girls as they struggled to carry baskets overflowing with clothes down the street.

The woman hit record on her smartphone and began narrating as the officer -- 22nd District patrolman Sammy Brinson -- swiftly put the laundry baskets and bags into the back of his marked Ford Explorer. He then drove the clothes to the laundromat a block away with the girls in tow on the sidewalk.

"That was so nice. Oh my gosh, that was a blessing," Daniels says. "That was good deed."

Daniels tells NBC10 she felt "very emotional" seeing the kind act. "I was truly honored to have been able to experience his good deed while being in the presence of my children," she said.

After Daniels posted the video to Facebook, it quickly gained traction earning nearly 200,000 views and more than 5,000 shares. Philadelphia Police was one of sharers adding that Brinson was "doing what he does best — being a genuinely awesome guy."

A mother and her two children were forced to jump from a second-story window Friday morning as a quick-moving blaze ripped through at least three rowhouses, destroying two, in New Jersey, fire officials say.

The blaze broke out at about 3 a.m. at a home at East 18th and Ellison streets in Paterson. The fire jumped to at least two other homes as crews worked to get a handle on the four-alarm blaze.

It’s not clear when the mother and children jumped from their home, but all three were taken to the hospital. Their conditions are unknown. A fourth person was also treated for smoke inhalation.

The blaze appeared to be under control by about 7 a.m., but dozens of firefighters remain at the scene.

At the height of the blaze, observers said smoke from the fire was so thick it made breathing difficult.

Officials say that 28 people, including 18 children, from three families were displaced by the blaze.

The cause of the fire wasn’t immediately known.

Armed Police Swarm NJ Hotel

A tense police standoff with suspects holed up inside a New Jersey hotel lasted for hours Thursday before police took three men into custody.

It's not clear why police were called to La Quinta Inn and Suites in Clifton late afternoon. Police presence quickly swelled, with Clifton police, FBI, armored SWAT and emergency service unit trucks filling the parking lot.

A cellphone video taken by one hotel guest at her window showed police in bulletproof vests approaching the hotel, armed with rifles.

"I opened up the window, there's like seven guys with rifles running across the building," said Anna Mincey. "They're banging on the doors, 'Police, police!'"

"Two guys with huge rifles bust in the door and just like, 'Get out,'" she said. "It turned out as they were going around, two of the guys turned up inside people's hotel rooms. They must have knocked on people's doors and forced themselves inside."

Taylor Chante, who works inside a restaurant at the hotel, said she was told the suspects were wanted in an armed robbery of a taxi driver and were hiding in the hotel.

"They told us, 'Do not let anybody in,'" she said. "It was a bit nerve-wracking."

The standoff lasted about five hours before three men were taken into custody. Police have not made any official comment on the incident.

Salon for Homeless Comes to Philly

Philadelphia’s homeless will be able to get a full beauty parlor experience next week when artist Jody Wood’s Beauty in Transition brings a traveling salon around the city.

“I want to learn about how homelessness is approached in different communities. Homelessness is a nationwide problem,” Wood told NBC10. “It’s not limited to just a few cities.”

Wood will be in Philadelphia from June 21 to 28. She will be stationed at homeless shelters in Center City, West Philadelphia and Spring Garden.

Volunteers will staff a truck with a makeshift salon inside, providing residents and members of the city’s homeless shelters with shampoo, cut, color and styling services.

Since Philadelphia is growing rapidly, Wood said, homelessness could become a bigger problem for the city in the near future. This is the first time Wood has brought her service to Philadelphia.

“Hair and beauty services are not essential to survival, but they are essential to identity,” Wood said. “Every human wants to feel beautiful and cared for.”

Wood started the project in 2006 in Lawrence, Kansas and has previously served the homeless populations in Denver, Colorado and New York City.

“The project can really be replicated everywhere because economic inequality is all over the place,” Wood said.

A body was found inside a debris-filled home that caught fire in Germantown early Friday morning.

The blaze broke out inside on the second floor of the 2-story rowhome along the 5600 block of Bloyd Street around 1 a.m., fire officials said.

Neighbors said a woman lived there, but the fire department could not immediately identify the victim.

As flames shot through the roof, fire crews had to push their way past piles and piles of debris as well as breaking through windows that were boarded up from the inside.

Fire crews said they believed the homeowner was a hoarder. It took firefighters hours to locate the victim's body. An autopsy will be performed by the Philadelphia Medical Examiner to determine the exact cause of death.

No other homes were affected by the blaze.

Will 'Bill' Wash Out Your Father's Day Plans?

$

Will your Father’s Day plans go off without a hitch or will what remains of a tropical storm dampen your day?

It could depend on how much of a punch “Bill” still has when the remnants of the tropical storm move into the Philadelphia region just in time for Father’s Day. Some localized flooding could occur as the system leaves inches of rain on some areas.

The rain, which could be heavy at times and even include some thunderstorms, will strike much of the region late Saturday night into Sunday, said NBC10 First Alert Weather meteorologist Sheena Parveen.

“Right now it looks like close to midnight Saturday the rain will start and it will be lasting overnight – so most people will be sleeping when the heavy rain is here,” said Sheena. “The biggest concern will be flooding.”

The National Weather Service issued a Flood Watch for the entire region. Before moving out, the remnants of “Bill” could leave 1 to 3 inches of rain while most of you sleep with up to 4 inches possible in some areas leading to flooding fears.

Models differ if points to the north or south of Philly will see the heaviest rain. Sheena said that rain totals could drastically differ just miles apart.

“Most of the heavy rain will be gone by the time people wake up and have their (Father’s Day) plans,” said Sheena. “There’s still a chance we could see some showers in the afternoon but the biggest concern will be while people are sleeping.”

People sleeping at the Firefly Festival in Dover could get soaked as they are under a flood watch.

"I would suggest they look elsewhere since they are under Flood Watch -- Unless they are really gung-ho about staying in their tent," said Sheena.
