Pool Battle: Plan Would Ban Renters From Swimming

0

Some residents and the mayor of popular Delaware beach town Rehoboth Beach want pools that are part of rental homes in their town closed to renters.

Rehoboth Mayor Sam Cooper has put a proposal before the town's council that would ban homeowners who rent out homes from letting their tenants use the pools installed on their property.

"It's relentless noise," said resident Donna Mabry. Her home backs up to a seven bedroom rental house that sleeps 18 people and has a pool.

"People are in the pool three and four times a day — screaming and shrieking," she said. "This is unreasonable noise, noise that really breaks your back, noise that almost everybody would find offensive and obtrusive."

The proposed ban has homeowner John Bloxom livid. He rents out a large house featuring an in-ground pool and said he's never had a complaint.

"I think it's outrageous," he told NBC10 Delaware Bureau reporter Tim Furlong. "It's a horrific invasion of private property rights and it is tremendously unfair to the tenant community."

If the plan went through, landlords like Bloxom would have to find a way to cordon off their pools. They'd also make less money since properties with pools can charge a premium. A weeklong rental at some houses during the summer season can range between $10,000 and $12,000.

Bloxom says residents for the ban want to turn the resort into a retirement community, while supporters, like Mabry, feel allowing it to continue will drive away permanent residents.

Cooper did not return a call for comment on the plan. The town's council is expected to vote on the measure next week.

Same Message, Different Voice for Tram Car Recording

The iconic recording of "Watch the tram car, please" that is synonymous with The Wildwoods can no longer be heard on the Atlantic City boardwalk.

But the phrase is a different story.

On Friday, AC tram car operator B&B Parking deleted the recording — that's been playing on people-movers rolling along the Wildwood boardwalk for decades — from their five small trams. The move came a day after lawyers for the shore town sent a cease and desist letter demanding it be silenced.

While the recording has been changed, the phrase "Watch the tram car, please" remains — just with a different voice.

"We need something in the near-term to take care of pedestrian safety on the boardwalk," B&B Parking Vice President Tim Boland told NBC10 Jersey Shore Bureau Reporter Ted Greenberg.

The Wildwoods has been fighting for months to stop B&B from using the recording. Officials questioned how the company obtained the message.

While the recording is no longer identical, it's not clear whether The Wildwoods plan to pursue further legal action to have the phrase removed altogether.

B&B is planning to hold a contest to find a new tram car message.

Storm Flips Trailers, Rips Roof Off Crayola Warehouse

A pop-up thunderstorm delivered a huge punch to parts of the Lehigh Valley Friday evening with winds tossing truck trailers, splitting trees and tearing part of the roof from a warehouse.

The storm developed around 6 p.m. and left a path of damage through an industrial park along the 2400 block of Brodhead Road.

At least a half dozen trailers lined up outside warehouses for Crayola and Osram Sylvania were tossed onto their sides or thrown out of their parking spaces like toys.

A tree was left splintered in the parking lot and a strip of the roof at the Crayola warehouse was peeled back like a piece of tape exposing the building inside.

A witness described the storm as a tornado, but NBC10 First Alert Weather Chief Meteorologist Glenn "Hurricane" Schwartz says straight line winds were the culprit. Wind gusts of 57 mph were clocked at nearby Lehigh Valley International Airport around 5:25 p.m.

Trees fell in several neighborhoods in Bethlehem, South Whitehall and Spring Township. An area of Jackson Boulevard in Spring Twp. near Stanford had large trees on top of cars and next to houses.

There were no reports of injuries.

Dozens of Drug Arrests as City Battles Heroin

As a South Jersey city fights heroin, police arrested dozens of people and most of the alleged buyers aren’t from the city.

Camden County Police arrested 41 people – ages ranging from 19 to 51 – trying to purchase drugs from undercover officers in the Chestnut and Baring streets area during a “drug reversal operation” Thursday morning, said the Camden County Police Department.

Of the drug busts, 90 percent of the people came from other communities, said police. Each person faces drugs charges. Besides the arrests, police also impounded 10 vehicles.

The drug arrests come on the heels of 55 overdoses – four deaths – in Camden in just 10 days.

Camden officials urged drug users and their families dealing with addiction to visit the Camden County Addiction Awareness Task Force website or call the CRISIS hotline at 877-266-8222.

No Heat Wave in Philly Yet

UPDATE: We didn't quite get there Saturday. Temperatures hit a high of 88 so no heat wave yet.

Will it be a heat wave?

With the Philadelphia region in for another hot and humid day Saturday, the first heat wave of the season could be declared.

For a heat wave to occur, the high temperature in Philadelphia must hit 90 or higher for three consecutive days. After temps hit 92 Thursday and a record-tying 95 on Friday, the first two 90-plus days are in the books, but will the third happen?

"We are on track for a heat wave with a forecast high of 91 Saturday," , said First Alert Weather meteorologist Brittney Shipp. "It’s very close to the threshold but it will not be as humid Saturday with drier air moving in from the northwest."

Heat wave or not, Saturday will still be hot and that can hit people hard.

"You should still drink plenty of water since these temperatures are well above average for this time of year and our bodies are not used to it yet," said Shipp.
