Local Home Depot Helps Disabled Vet

A local Home Depot went above and beyond for a wheelchair-bound Vietnam veteran.

Calvin Skip Mullen, who recently moved to the area from Louisiana, visited the Home Depot at the Concordville Town Centre on Hatton Drive in Glen Mills, Pennsylvania Sunday around 5:30 p.m. The Navy Veteran was with his daughter Chris Jones as they searched through the hardware store for lumber to build a ramp to cover the steps leading up to the entrance of his newly purchased condo.

The veteran began to suffer from diabetes due to Agent Orange exposure during his service which led to the amputation of his right leg from the knee down. With the aid of a prosthetic device, Mullen fortunately has walking capabilities. However, due to the development of sores on his leg he is currently wheelchair-bound and unable to enter the condo without the assistance of an incline.

Upon entering Home Depot, they spoke to an employee and a supervisor, Ed, about purchasing lumber as well as inquiring if they could have the wood cut to cover the steps outside the condo. The supervisor told them yes and then eagerly offered to assemble the ramp and deliver the finished product to the condo without any additional charge.

Ed also assured the family that the ramp would be ready for installation after they returned from dinner. Within just two hours, the ramp was completed. Even though the family returned to the store at the brink of closing time, the employees did not hesitate to finish the job.

The employee followed the family to the condo, located approximately three miles from the store, unloaded the ramp from the truck and assembled it quickly. Mullen had safe access to his home within the hour.

Jones was elated after the experience, commending the employees’ efforts. In addition to showing the family kindness, Home Depot also saved them from a large out-of-pocket expense.  Jones noted that the materials alone would have cost hundreds of dollars.

“My mom was floored and was saying ‘this has never happened in Louisiana, I just can’t believe this is happening,’” Jones said. “They did all this for us and he didn’t even ask for it – it was amazing.”

Jones is thankful to the employees for showing appreciation for her father’s nine years of service.

“I’ve already been telling everyone today that Home Depot is the bomb –they went way above and beyond,” Jones said. “It was a very humbling experience because you don’t hear about that, you always hear about the bad stuff.”

Fire Spreads to 20 Homes in Hamilton Township

At least 20 homes were damaged after a massive fire ripped through a block in Hamilton Township, New Jersey.

The fire started on the 1700 block of East State Street Monday afternoon and spread to at least 20 row homes, causing serious damage to 15. Investigators say strong winds caused the fire to quickly spread from home to home.

"It moved fast," said Hamilton Township Fire Chief Thomas Gribben. "We ran out of personnel very quickly. We couldn't get them on scene fast enough. That's how fast it was running."

Around 175 firefighters responded to the 6-alarm blaze and were eventually able to bring the flames under control. The block was evacuated as residents helped their fellow neighbors.

"Someone knocked on the door and said, 'Come out! The house is on fire,'" said Alice Leach, one of the residents.

No injuries were reported during the blaze.

Officials continue to investigate the cause but say workers were repairing a roof on top of one of the homes when the fire began.

The Red Cross is currently assisting the displaced residents, many of whom lost everything.

"It can be replaced," Leach said. "I'm just thankful that I have my life."

Drunk Cop Breaks Into Stranger's Home: Police

A Wilmington police officer was arrested after he allegedly broke into a stranger’s home while drunk.

Investigators say Officer Michael Spencer was partying at a friend’s house on Churchtown Road in Middletown, Delaware Saturday around 1:30 a.m. Spencer, who was drunk and off-duty, then left the party and fell asleep inside his car which was parked in his friend’s driveway, according to police.

Spencer then woke up shortly before 4:30 a.m. that same morning, officials said. Still drunk, Spencer allegedly walked to a home a few houses down on Churchtown Road, believing it was his own even though he lives in Wilmington.

Police say Spencer then kicked in the door and forced his way in, frightening the homeowners, a husband and wife, who were inside. The wife then jumped out of the window and ran to alert a neighbor while her husband grabbed a gun and pointed it at Spencer, police said. The wife and neighbor then called police.

As he was held at gunpoint, Spencer repeatedly yelled, “It’s a mistake! I’m scared! Don’t shoot! I’m black! I’m a cop,” according to the criminal complaint. Police later arrived at the home and arrested Spencer. He is charged with criminal mischief and trespassing.

Sources told NBC10 Spencer is a corporal with the Wilmington Police Department. They also said he was at work Monday but in street clothes and not on normal duty. NBC10 reached out to Wilmington Police for comment.

“We are not commenting on an ongoing Delaware State Police criminal investigation,” a spokesperson wrote. “The officer as per departmental policy is currently on administrative duty.”

Court records show Spencer has been in trouble with the law before. In 2010 Spencer was sued after he allegedly struck a woman's car while drunk. The woman also accused Spencer of going back to her apartment, handing her his gun and belt, stripping down and then asking her for sex. The woman said she refused and Spencer fell asleep until he was taken into custody by his fellow officers.

Sex Offender a POI in Himebaugh Case

A renewed push to find a New Jersey resident who disappeared 24 years ago has led to another look at a person of interest in the case.

Police are investigating whether Thomas Butcavage Jr. was involved in the disappearance of 11-year-old Mark Himebaugh in 1991. They also want to hear from anyone who may have seen Butcavage in Cape May County, New Jersey in the late 80’s or early 90’s.

“Investigators have focused on any connections to Cape May County in the past and that continues to be our focus with this new effort,” said Middle Township Police Chief Christopher Leusner.

Butcavage, a convicted sex offender, is one of several persons of interest in Himebaugh’s disappearance in November of 1991 near his Middle Township home. Some people who knew Butcavage believe there’s a strong resemblance between him and the sketch of a man spotted talking with Himebaugh shortly before he vanished.

“Mr. Butcavage’s name has been out in the media previously so that’s why we feel comfortable responding to any inquiries about him,” Chief Leusner said.

A 1993 report from the Philadelphia Inquirer detailed how Butcavage’s Haverford Township home was searched after a tip from a male prostitute linked him to the Himebaugh case. Butcavage’s lawyer said his client denied having any involvement however. NBC10 obtained court records showing Butcavage pleaded guilty to numerous sex crimes involving underage boys in Chester County six years later. He remains in prison.

“The connection to Cape May County is something that’s been lacking in our efforts related to Mr. Butcavage and that’s why we would ask anyone with any knowledge to contact us,” Chief Leusner said.

Since launching a partnership last month with the National Center For Missing and Exploited Children in the search for Himebaugh, local authorities say they’ve received dozens of tips by phone and at a command post near the spot where he was last seen.

Anyone with information in the case can call Middle Township Police at 609-465-8700 or the NCMEC hotline at 1-800-THE-LOST.

If your loved one has gone missing, here's a list of things you should do right away.

Tractor-Trailer Crushes Car in NJ, Killing 1

A busy highway in New Jersey was shut down Monday after a tractor-trailer hit an overpass and crushed another car, killing one person, authorities and witnesses say.

The westbound lanes of Route 3 in Rutherford were closed for several hours after the tractor-trailer's load became detached under the overpass at Ridge Road and hit the other car shortly before 2:30 p.m., according to Total Traffic.

There was an estimated 3-mile backup in the westbound lanes at 4 p.m., causing major problems for the evening rush. One of three westbound lanes has since been reopened.

The eastbound lanes of Route 3 did remain open. NJ Transit and Port Authority both warned customers to expect delays as the evening rush got underway.

Chopper 4 showed the tractor-trailer's load wedged under the overpass; part of a smaller car appeared crushed beneath it. The identity of the victim wasn't known.

The company hauling the container has had violations in the past, according to data from the U.S. Department of Transportation. Last November, Parkway Iron and Metal received 5 violations, including one for failing to secure a load, but there were no serious crashes.

It remains unclear why the driver thought the tractor-trailer could fit underneath the overpass. No charges have been filed.

Workers Monday night were continuing to make repairs.

Customs agents at Newark Liberty International Airport allegedly found 5 pounds of cocaine hidden in wooden coasters, a picture frame,  glass bottle and jars in a man’s luggage late last month, officials say.

A 29-year-old man was arrested on state drug smuggling charges after authorities made the discovery on May 29, U.S. Customs and Border Patrol said.

The suspect was going through inspection after a flight from Peru when agents noticed the coasters, frame, bottle and jars were unusually heavy.

They took the items to a private search room and discovered they contained a white powder that later tested positive for cocaine.

The man was arrested after the discovery. Authorities say that the drugs could have sold for as much as $87,000.

Turf at Women's World Cup 'Nightmare,' Soccer Star Says: Despite their protests, the best female soccer players in the world are being forced to play all the games of the 2015 Women's World Cup on artificial turf. She said that playing on turf "affects everything" from the way the ball bounces to the bloody "turf burns" the surface leaves on legs and arms.

Suburban Mom Accused of Sex With Teen in Court

A 42-year-old suburban mother of three accused of having sex with a 17-year-old soccer player is due in a Montgomery County courtroom Tuesday morning.

Iris Gibney stands accused of corruption of a minor, dissemination of explicit materials to a minor and trespass by auto.

The charges stem from her November arrest where an Upper Pottsgrove Police officer allegedly found Gibney and a 17-year-old boy naked, having sex inside a car illegally parked in Hollenbach Park in Pottstown, Pennsylvania, after closing.

As the officer approached the car, he saw Gibney performing a sex act on the teen, according to an affidavit of probable cause obtained from police.

The Pottsgrove High School student said he met Gibney at a high school football game, police said. She had been volunteering as a "cheer mom" for the cheerleading team that her daughter is a part of.

Confronted about the alleged affair, the teen told the officer he couldn't lie and admitted he was having sex with Gibney, according to police records.

Gibney, who works as an associate at Victoria's Secret in King of Prussia, told the officer, "I’ve never been in trouble before. I can't believe I did this. I have three children of my own — I am so, so sorry," according to the arrest report.

Further investigation revealed the married mother of three and the teen communicated through Twitter and a public chat room. Gibney then sent the boy several partially nude photos from her cellphone to his, police said.

As part of their investigation, police confiscated the boy's phone and found the sexts from the Pottstown woman, investigators said.

Gibney is scheduled to be in court Tuesday for a pre-trial conference, according to court records.

Police released surveillance video Tuesday of a man wanted in connection with the attempted robbery of a Philadelphia pizza shop.

The June 4 robbery ended with the suspect’s accomplice being shot and killed by an off-duty detective..

The detective was picking up food at Rising Sun Pizza in Lawndale when two men came in and put a gun to his head, police said. The pair forced him to the floor and took $20 from him before the detective identified himself and pulled out his weapon.

Chief Inspector Scott Small said one suspect fired what proved to be blanks from close range before the detective returned fire.

The pair fled the shop before 33-year-old suspect Andrew Ellerbe collapsed in the parking lot and died.

The surveillance video of Ellerbe and his accomplice shows them walking down the street moments before the incident.

Investigators believe the at-large male is a suspect in several gunpoint robberies across the city.
