Flight Attendant Who Took Photo in Plane's Engine Finds Support

A labor union representing flight attendants is backing one of their own amid a controversy involving a photo of the airline employee posing inside a plane’s engine.

The Spirit Airlines flight attendant, who has been identified as Ericka Paige Diehl, took the photo shortly before the aircraft's take off at Chicago’s O’Hare International Airport, according to reports. A passenger contacted a local TV station with concerns.

The airline said in a statement after the photo was brought to their attention that the "activity portrayed absolutely goes against Spirit policy," adding that it, "will be investigating further and take appropriate action."

However, the Association of Flight Attendants-CWA said that many airline employees have taken similar photos since "the dawn of the jet age" and there was no security risk for travelers.

"Flight attendants and pilots have been photographed with the engine as a celebration of the might of aviation," AFA president Sara Nelson said in a statement. "These images are iconic and common. The photos have become a rite of passage for crews. The only security risk here is for the flight attendant herself, whose name, age, and city have been broadcast in the media across the country."

Other flight attendants across the U.S. also backed Diehl, posting photos on Twitter of themselves inside of plane engines (as seen below) under the hashtag ‪#FLYwithERIKA‬.

Federal Aviation Administration spokeswoman Elizabeth Isham Cory said in a statement that the practice is not prohibited under its regulations, though the agency “discourages individuals without proper training or supervision from climbing onto any part of an aircraft.”

“As part of normal maintenance and inspection procedures, certified mechanics sometimes climb into these engines, which are designed to be structurally robust,” Cory added. “The FAA has been in contact with the airline that employs the flight attendant. The airline inspected the aircraft in question and found no damage.”

Diehl couldn't be reached for comment.

Town Meeting Shooter Sentenced to Life

A man who opened fire during a municipal meeting in Pennsylvania, killing three people, pleaded guilty and was sentenced to three life sentences plus 61-120 additional years behind bars Friday.

Rockne Newell was in court for a hearing in Stroudsburg Friday when he entered the guilty plea on all charges. District Attorney Dave Christine said Newell's sentencing was the longest rendered by the court in the 33 years he's been a lawyer.

Newell was accused of killing township zoning officer David Fleetwood and residents Gerard Kozic and James LaGuardia and wounding a fourth person. Ross Township officials had condemned his property and then bought it at a sheriff's sale, saying he owed thousands of dollars in fines and had generated complaints that he lived in a storage shed, built an illegal culvert and used a bucket outside as a toilet.

Newell packed a rental car with guns and ammunition and drove to the August 2013 municipal meeting, about 85 miles north of Philadelphia, authorities said.

He used a Ruger Mini-14 rifle to blast a barrage of gunfire through a wall into the meeting room, and began firing at people trying to flee. When he ran out of ammunition, Newell retrieved a revolver from the car, and returned, but was tackled by two men attending the meeting and shot in the leg during the scuffle, authorities said.

Ross Township zoning officer David Fleetwood, Gerard Kozic, and James LaGuardia died of their injuries. Three others were wounded.

"I wish I killed more of them!" Newell shouted when a state trooper arrived on the scene, the trooper said.

During Newell's preliminary hearing in November 2013, prosecutors played audio of the shooting rampage and its aftermath. In it, Fleetwood told a 911 dispatcher that he'd been shot in the stomach and identified Newell as the shooter.

"I can't move. ... Please hurry, please hurry," he said. He died at the hospital about an hour later.

Linda Kozic, who was shot in the leg, could be heard urging her 53-year-old husband, Gerard, to breathe and "stay with me."

In a jailhouse interview with The Pocono Record three weeks after the shootings, Newell said, "I'm sorry innocent people got hurt, though I know 'sorry' doesn't fix anything."

'Piccolo Girl' Bobblehead Kickstarter Reaches Goal

When we last checked in with Villanova’s “Crying Piccolo Girl”, she, along with the National Bobblehead Hall of Fame Museum, was in the midst of a month-long kickstarter project in the hopes of bringing a bobblehead to the world. As it turned out, they hit their goal quicker than expected.

Roxanne Chalifoux’s campaign was launched earlier this month, thanks to Phil Sklar of the bobblehead museum, and was given 30 days to raise $5,000 in order to provide enough money to produce the bobbleheads. Yet with a week remaining, the fund had already received backing from over 130 people totaling nearly $5,500.

“I’m definitely relieved since [failing] would have been a little embarrassing. But I knew with the whole Nova Nation community behind me that we would make our goal,” said Chalifoux. "I’ve had so much incredible support since the entire situation happened, and I’m just so grateful.”

The bobblehead design is still in production, but the initial prototype can be found on the kickstarter page. Chalifoux said that they should have the final version up by Monday.

The recent Villanova graduate will be heading to the Pennsylvania College of Optometry at Salus University for her post-graduate degree, but doesn’t expect the fame to carry with her.

“It’s totally fine with me. This was a fun ride, but I’m more than happy to be totally normal again!” Chalifoux said. “It’s great that I still get to be a Villanova Wildcat forever, and that’s all I could ever want… I’ll always be tied to my alma mater.”

This whirlwind of a spring only occurred because of the Villanova men’s basketball team being defeated in the NCAA Tournament. Eighth-seeded North Carolina State upset the top-seeded Wildcats, and Chalifoux, who was there with the band, played through the tears as the credits rolled. The video went viral instantly.

“My senior year, it would have been incredible to see the team go to the Final Four. I can be at peace with the loss considering the ‘once-in-a-lifetime’ opportunities I received, but it still would have been a dream come true to see the team make it to Indianapolis,” Chalifoux added. “It would have been an amazing memory to have with the band, going to the Final Four with all my friends.”

The bobbleheads should be ready to ship out by September. The first 250 backers can guarantee themselves a bobblehead for a minimum donation of $15, plus shipping. Chalifoux receives a small portion of profits, but she ensured that the band received some kickback as well.

“It was such a unique way to help benefit the band so I really wanted to be a part of the project,” said Chalifoux. “I was so excited to give back to such an important organization that was part of my phenomenal college experience.”

Chalifoux added a “Go ’Cats” cheer, a jovial phrase oft-uttered on Villanova’s campus. A truly fitting way to sum up a community that has had her back since that disappointing March evening.

Police identified a man who was found dead inside a suitcase in Delaware County Thursday afternoon.

A dog walker was walking in the area of the old Westinghouse plant Thursday near 2nd Street in Tinicum, Pennsylvania -- not far from Philadelphia International Airport -- when he saw the suitcase, said the Delaware County District Attorney’s Office.

The man called police who came out and unzipped the suitcase to discover the man’s body stuffed inside the large brown case. On Friday police identified the victim as 40-year-old Scott Stephen Bernheisel. Bernheisel's last known address was in Philadelphia, according to records.

Jim Martin -- who walks his dog in the area called "Back Road" that sits just below flights paths -- said that he saw the case in the weeds a few days back and he noticed something strange about it.

"I smelled a smell -- you mentally think something, then you're like pause, pause it's my imagination," said Martin.

Officials have not yet revealed a cause or manner of death. They continue to investigate.
