2 Charged in Portable Meth Lab Bust

Two men were arrested in Delaware after Troopers busted a portable meth lab at a home in Felton, according to investigators.

On Tuesday around 8:30 p.m., the Delaware State Police Governor’s Task Force spotted a shed hidden at the back of a property on the 100 block of Cabin Ridge Road that contained materials consistent with a clandestine meth lab. Police arrived at the Felton home in search of two men, James T. Moore, wanted in violation of probation, and Steve Jester, wanted by the Felton Police Department on a criminal trespass warrant.

According to authorities, Moore and Darryl Cox were hiding in a small shed containing bottles used in portable meth labs to synthesize methamphetamine. After further investigation, the Troopers found additional bottles of waste containing ingredients to make the drug, officials said. Jester was not found however.
The Department of Natural Resources and Environmental Control, Delaware State Police Kent County Drug Unit, and the Little Creek Fire Department helped the Troopers dispose the waste products of the meth lab properly. After the cleanup, the shed was safe without further incident, allowing nearby residents to remain in their homes.
Troopers are continuing their investigation. Cox, 44, and Moore, 40, are currently being held at the James T. Vaughn Correctional center in default of $28, 500. The two suspects are charged with resisting arrest, manufacturing a controlled substance, operation of a clandestine meth lab, conspiracy second degree, possession of drug paraphernalia, and violation of probation.

Angry Resident Screams at Rowan Students

A caught on cam profanity laced rant from a Glassboro resident aimed at Rowan University college students is bringing awareness to increased tensions within the community.

Ariana Evans, a senior at Rowan, told NBC10 she was moving into her off-campus housing Tuesday with her fellow students when Robert Mintz, a resident nearby, began shouting at them.

“I’m hearing the word f*** you every day!” Mintz screams in a cellphone video one of the students recorded. “So f*** you! You got a problem? Come over here!”

The students say they called 911 as Mintz continued his rant.

“All he said was that he hated us and he hated my landlord,” said Olivia Graham, another senior at Rowan.

“It was just absurd,” Evans said. “You’re saying this is a family neighborhood and yet you’re screaming. I’m just trying to get an education with affordable housing. Sorry.”

The video went viral after it was posted on social media. NBC10 spoke to Mintz Wednesday and tried to show him the clip.

“I don’t want to look at it,” he said.

Mintz apologized for the rant however and explained why he lashed out.

“On Thursday and Friday nights there’s in excess of 500 kids walking up and down the streets, one, two, three, drunk and urinating all over the place,” he said.

While Glassboro’s residential population is 19,000, Rowan University’s student population is close to 15,000, jumping nearly 1500 over the last few years. Officials at the school say that of the 10,000 full-time students, less than half of them live on campus.

Glassboro Police Chief Alex Fanfarillo believes the student population is infringing on the neighborhood.

“In the past 15 years, the college grows by leaps and bounds, they’re not prepared for housing and housing is going to find itself off campus and here we are,” Fanfarillo said.

Police say a collaborative effort of added weekend patrols, monitoring of social media and a three strike code of conduct agreement that students who rent must sign has cut their open container, noise and disturbance calls in half over the past four years.

“I feel like the students aren’t represented right,” said Adam Szyfman, a landlord in Glassboro. “They move into a neighborhood and I feel like what that guy did is what every other neighbor thinks of them. There has got to be a better answer.”

As students and local residents continue to find ways to live together, construction is underway on a new seven-story building at Rowan that will include 1400 residence hall units.

Landlord Shoots Tenant's Girlfriend: Police

A woman is in the hospital after sources say a feud between a landlord and his tenant led to a shooting in Middle Township, New Jersey Tuesday night.

William Ries, 70, was arrested and charged with attempted murder, aggravated assault and possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose. Police say he shot a 62-year-old woman in the chest Tuesday around 6:15 p.m. outside her boyfriend’s home on Church Road in Middle Township. NBC10 obtained the 911 call Ries allegedly made moments after the shooting.

“911 what is your emergency?” the operator asks.
“Yeah, 38 Church Road,” says a man identified by police as Ries.
“Yes sir. What’s the problem?” asks the operator.
“I just shot somebody,” the man says.
“Excuse me?” asks the operator.
“I just shot somebody,” the man replies.

Ries is the landlord of the home on Church Road and lives in another part of the house, according to investigators. Prosecutors say he fired two rounds from a handgun, one of which struck the woman. Investigators told NBC10 they believe the woman's 59-year-old boyfriend who lives in the home was Ries’ intended target.

“I was shooting at ,” the man says in the 911 call. “I think his girlfriend got it though.”
“Why were you doing that sir?” the operator asks.
“Ah, just come out here,” the man says. “I’ll get my lawyer.”

The woman was airlifted to the Atlantic City Medical Center where she is currently in stable condition. Her boyfriend was not hurt during the incident.

While sources believe the incident was sparked by an ongoing dispute between Ries and his tenant, police have not yet revealed what led to the problems between the two men. Ries is currently being held in the Cape May County Jail in lieu of $500,000 bail.

A man is in the hospital after lightning struck in a Delaware County town.

Witnesses told NBC10 the father of three was walking his dog on the 300 block of Hastings Boulevard in Broomall shortly before 6 p.m. when a quick-moving storm formed overhead. As the man walked down the sidewalk and up his driveway, lightning suddenly struck and the man fell to the ground.

“It was so not like anything I’ve ever heard,” said Kelly Sullivan, a witness. “It was terrifying.”

Sullivan says the man was knocked unconscious after she saw the flash and heard a thunderous clap. Witnesses also say the man claimed he had tingling in his legs when he regained consciousness.

“I was terrified because I know him personally,” Sullivan said.

NBC10 First Alert Weather technology showed severe lightning strikes over Broomall at the time of the incident.

Despite the witness accounts, Marple Township Police told NBC10 they don’t believe the man was directly struck by lightning and say he may have suffered some sort of medical emergency.

Investigators say they didn’t find any burns on his body. He was taken to the hospital where he is currently being evaluated.

Police are searching for a man who they say brutally beat an employee at a local Chinese restaurant during a home invasion and robbery in Philadelphia.

Police say the unidentified man entered an apartment above the Eagle’s Corner Chinese Food store on the 6200 block of Spruce Street Tuesday at 4:38 a.m. Once inside, the suspect approached a 61-year-old cook at the restaurant who was sleeping at the time. He then began to beat the employee with an aluminum baseball bat and wire cutter, according to investigators. While police said only one person was involved in the attack, the employee claimed there were two.

“My employee, he told me there were two guys,” said John Zhang, the co-owner of Eagle’s Corner.

The victim said the attack lasted for 40 minutes. At least one of the suspects then forced his way inside the restaurant, causing major damage, and stole $8,000 from two of the registers before fleeing the scene, according to Zhang. Zhang told NBC10 the cook called him moments after the assault.

“He was very weak,” Zhang said. “When I saw his phone number I knew something happened.”

Zhang says his cook was on the floor in a pool of blood when he arrived. He was taken to the hospital where he is currently in guarded condition. Police say he suffered a fractured skull and broken ribs.

While the victim said he was attacked by two suspects, police only released a description of one, a 20-year-old man who they say was wearing a zip-up hooded jacket with the “Nike” logo on the upper left chest and cargo pants.
