A Pennsylvania man has been convicted of involuntary manslaughter in the shooting death of a standout high school athlete in western Pennsylvania.

Twenty-two-year-old Hasani Simpkins of Uniontown was immediately sentenced Friday in Fayette County Court to 2{ to five years in prison.

Jurors deliberated for about an hour before deciding that Simpkins didn't intend to kill 17-year-old Connellsville Area High School junior Darrell Ross during a November 2013 house party.

Police said Simpkins told officers that a .22-caliber revolver discharged unexpectedly. But prosecutors said he initially said the victim died playing Russian Roulette before acknowledging that he shot the victim in the back of the head. They sought a first-degree murder conviction.

Simpkins apologized to the victim's family before sentencing, saying ``If I could take back that day, I would.''

A southern New Jersey couple accused of seriously injuring the man's young daughter during a recent visit at their home are now facing aggravated assault charges.

Gloucester County prosecutors said 25-year-old Jacob Lihn and 24-year-old Jennifer Pandorf, who live together in Sewell, also face child endangerment charges. Bail was set at $50,000 for Lihn and $40,000 for Pandorf, and it wasn't known Saturday if either one had retained an attorney.

Prosecutors said Lihn's 2-year-old daughter suffered retinal hemorrhaging and bleeding on the brain, but did not say how the injuries allegedly occurred. The child was being treated at a rehabilitation center.

Doctors found the injuries when the girl's mother took her for treatment last month after the toddler returned home from a three-day visit with Lihn.

Prosecutors said a man should be held criminally responsible for the deaths of his mother, another woman and her teenage son in a traffic accident two years ago.

The defense contended that 34-year-old John Edward Mayer of Slatington had a seizure before the February 2013 crash in Whitehall Township. He was charged with homicide by vehicle, involuntary manslaughter and reckless endangerment.

The (Allentown) Morning Call reported that prosecutors argued Friday that Mayer should be held responsible for not having taken his medication that morning, ignoring the possibility that he might have a seizure.

Authorities have released the name of a woman struck and killed by a small, amphibious tourist boat on a downtown Philadelphia street.

A police spokeswoman said Saturday that 68-year-old Elizabeth Karnicki of Beaumont, Texas, was pronounced dead at the scene just before 5:30 p.m. Friday.

Police said their preliminary investigation indicates that she and her husband were walking against a traffic light when she was hit by the Ride The Ducks boat in Chinatown. No charges have been filed.

The duck boats show tourists the sights from both land and water. In July 2010, a tugboat-guided barge struck a duck boat in the Delaware River, killing two tourists. The tug pilot was sentenced to a year in prison. The duck boats didn't operate for eight months after the crash.

Dogfish Head Brewings and Eats is clashing with its hometown after a Rehoboth Beach board rejected plans to redevelop and expand the flagship brewpub.

The News Journal reported Dogfish is asking the city to reconsider before the company takes an appeal to court. Dogfish founder Sam Calagione said the brewery was shocked and disappointed by the city's rejection.

Clif Hilderley of Rehoboth's Board of Adjustment voted down the expansion, saying the plan was too big for Rehoboth. He said Dogfish could leave town to expand.

But other business owners and tourism officials said Dogfish has become an attraction that draws visitors to Delaware and helps other businesses. Rehoboth draws about 6 million visitors a year.

Dogfish CEO Nick Benz said the brewpub won't contemplate moving out of Rehoboth.

A young girl who was shot in the head as she was riding in a car with her family was released from the hospital Friday as police continue to search for the gunman responsible.

Aniyah Curry, 8, was with her 3-year-old and 4-year-old sisters in the back of a red 2013 Chevy Impala on May 2 shortly before 9 p.m. Their father was driving while their mother, 26-year-old Lakisha Robinson, was in the front passenger seat.

The 26-year-old father told police he was approaching their home on the 5400 block of Haverford Avenue and slowed down to stop as he put his flashers on.

As he did, a dark 4-door sedan that was waiting behind them, sped up and then passed their vehicle, investigators said. The father told police he then heard a pop and the rear window of the Impala shattered. The sedan was last seen traveling west on Haverford Avenue from 54th Street.

The young girls screamed and started crying. Curry then held her head and told her parents she was hurt.

Robinson noticed her daughter was bleeding from the crown of her head and called police. Medics responded to the scene and the girl was taken to the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia. Doctors first thought the girl was cut by the shattered glass. They later discovered a bullet lodged in the girl’s skull however.

Curry underwent surgery Wednesday and the bullet was removed. She was released from the hospital Friday.

Robinson told the Philadelphia Daily News she believes the shooting was a road rage incident and that the shooter was angry about waiting in back of the family's car as they were double-parked in front of their home.

Investigators say two men were inside the sedan during the shooting though they have not yet released a detailed description of them. The city of Philadelphia is offering a $5,000 reward and the FOP Lodge is also offering a $5,000 reward for information leading to an arrest and conviction.

If you have any information on the shooting, please call Philadelphia Police.

A Pennsylvania baby boy died from his injuries nearly a week after his own mother allegedly threw him from an Allentown bridge 52 feet above the banks of the Lehigh River.

Zymeir Perry, 1, of Allentown, was pronounced dead at 11:51 a.m. Saturday at the Lehigh Valley Hospital, Cedar Crest.

Witnesses told police Zymeir's 19-year-old mother, identified as Johnesha Perry, was pushing the baby across the Hamilton Street Bridge in a stroller around 1:45 p.m. on May 3 when she stopped mid-span, took the child from the carriage and tossed him into the water, investigators said.

She then climbed over the railing and jumped in after him, officials said.

Neighbors said Perry often made the trip across the river but she never did anything like that before.

Police arrived moments later. They found Perry conscious on the river bank, according to reports.

In 911 calls obtained by NBC10, dispatchers can be heard giving locations on the mother and child.

"Be advised... they have recovered the child.

Two officers — identified as Joseph Iannetta and John Leonard — spotted the baby about 700 yards downstream, pulled him from the river and performed CPR.

Their efforts revived the boy, who was rushed to Lehigh Valley Hospital-Cedar Crest where he died from his injuries Saturday.

Perry was also rushed to the same hospital with minor injuries. She was guarded by Lehigh County Sheriffs, police confirmed.

Attempted homicide charges against the young mom were filed late Sunday night. She was also charged with two counts of aggravated assault and reckless endangerment, officials said.

Officials have not yet revealed whether the charges against her will be upgraded in light of the baby's death.

A South Jersey boy continues to recover both physically and emotionally several weeks after he and his friends were nearly killed by an alleged drunk driver as they were playing outside a home. The incident left him without several of his teeth.

Cody Bengel, 8, was playing with a 4-year-old girl, 15-year-old girl and 4-year-old boy outside a home on the dead end block of Chestnut Avenue in Woodbury Heights, New Jersey shortly before 8 p.m. back on April 21.

As they were playing they saw a pickup truck traveling down Chestnut Ave.

“I was hanging on to the back of the bike,” Cody Bengel said. “When I saw him coming I thought it was a joke.”

Cody and the three other kids got out of the street, waiting for the vehicle to pass. Police say the driver, identified as 48-year-old Hector Rios of Wenoah, swerved however and struck all four children before crashing into trees across the street.

“As soon as I landed I just sprinted to the house,” Cody said.

Officials say Rios’ foot remained on the accelerator after his vehicle came to a stop and a nearby resident had to break the passenger window to shut the truck off and get him out. He was arrested and charged with DUI causing serious bodily injury.

Cody and his friends were all hospitalized after the crash. While his friends only suffered bumps and bruises, Cody was the most seriously injured, suffering a concussion and several dislodged teeth.

The boy was eventually released from the hospital but still needs further treatment.

“The kids are afraid to go in the street now,” said Cody’s father Scott Bengel.

Bengel says insurance isn’t covering everything but the community is stepping up to help. They have created a “Teeth for Cody” GoFundMe page to help allay some of the cost.

3 Teens Shot Around Busy South Street

Three teens have been hospitalized after two shootings that happened along and near a busy stretch of South Street in Philadelphia overnight Sunday.

The first gunshots pierced the air around 1:15 a.m. near the intersection of 9th and South Streets in the Bella Vista section of the city, police tell NBC10.

A 17-year-old and 16-year-old, both males, were hit in the left leg area, police said. They about a block from the shooting scene before officers found them. Both were taken to Thomas Jefferson University Hospital and are listed in stable condition. The 16-year-old's condition had been upgraded from critical.

The shooting took place in a busy section of the street lined with shops and restaurants.

The victims told detectives they were walking by when a group of men got into an argument at the corner when one pulled out a handgun and opened fire. Police have not said if the victims were involved in the altercation.

Investigators shut down South Street between 9th and 6th Streets as part of the investigation and found a number of bullet shell casings littering the sidewalk and under cars.

While that investigation under way, about an hour later, another shooting happened around the corner near the intersection of 8th and Bainbridge Streets Officers scrambled to the block after hearing the gunshots to find an injured 19-year-old man, police said. He had also been shot in the leg and was taken to Jefferson Hospital for treatment.

Police later told NBC10 a friend of the victim shot on Bainbridge Street was arrested for possession of a weapon. He was not the gunman in the shooting however.

Police are not yet sure whether both shootings are connected, but say anything can happen along this popular stretch of the city which attracts residents from all over as well as tourists.

"This is no unusual night on South Street," said Lt. Michael Goodson. "We don't believe this was a robbery."

Goodson said police have reason to believe the shooting stemmed from a tiff that began in another neighborhood.

The suspect in the first shooting is described as a 18 to 21-year-old man standing 5-foot-7-inches tall with a medium build. There was no description for the shooter in the second incident.

Anyone with information is asked to call the Philadelphia Police tipline at 215.686.TIPS.
