Coyote Snatches Yorkie in Mouth, Runs Away: Police

Police in a New Jersey community are warning residents to be on alert after a coyote walked away from a home with a dog in its mouth last week.

Police in the Morris County township of Randolph say a homeowner let the pet Yorkie out at around 10 p.m. Tuesday and witnessed the coyote snatch the dog.

Neither of the animals has been seen since.

It's the latest coyote sighting in New Jersey. A man walking his dog was attacked earlier this month in Bergen County by a coyote that later tested positive for rabies. A second aggressive coyote was also found dead in a trap over the weekend; it was found non-rabid.

In nearby Saddle River, another rabid coyote attacked a man and his dog while he was working in the yard.

Coyotes have also been turning up more frequently in New York City.

Wildlife experts say people can reduce the risk of coyote conflicts by not feeding them and securing trash and pets, among other steps.

A 27-year-old teacher at a New Jersey charter school was shot dead in front of her home late Friday in front of a police officer she had flagged over as she argued with the father of her child, authorities said.

Prosecutors say Latrena May, who lived in East Orange and taught at the city's Pride Academy, was arguing with the father of her child, Andre Higgs, in front of her home on Tremont Avenue around 10 p.m. when she saw an officer on patrol and waved the cop over.

When the police officer approached May and Higgs, Higgs allegedly shot May. The officer then shot Higgs.

Higgs was taken to a hospital, where he was arrested and charged with murder and weapons offenses in May's death. The officer was not injured.

The age of May's child wasn't clear, and it wasn't known what she and Higgs were arguing about at the time of the shooting.

It wasn't clear Saturday if Higgs had retained an attorney.

Local Doctors Head to Nepal to Help Quake Victims

Three Philadelphia-area doctors are traveling to Nepal Sunday to assist medical personnel from around the world in their treatment of survivors of the devastating earthquake that killed more than 7,000 people.

"Initially the world rushes to these places, but down the road...," said Dr. Virnod Kripalu, a Wilmington, Delaware-based doctor, who co-founded the Delaware Medical Relief Team in 2010.

DMRT, a Wilmington-based nonprofit, formed after Haiti was struck in January 2010 by a magnitude 7.0 earthquake, which injured 300,000 people and left 220,000 dead.

"Initially there is a lot of trauma in the first few days," explained Kripalu. "But that tends to decrease as you go along... and then you get a lot of people with dehydration. You get sprains and chronic diseases. People don't have medications anymore, it is the whole spectrum."

While the experience in Haiti helped prepare many of DMRT's volunteers for disaster relief, Kripalu recognizes that the situation in Nepal will present its own challenges -- which is why he and two other physicians are using nearly eight days to work out logistics for the nonprofit, Kripalu said.

The three -- the DMRT's advanced team -- are leaving from Philadelphia International Airport Sunday morning.

They'll carry six suitcases filled with medical supplies, including antibiotics. Along with spending the week treating the injured, the group will meet with local hospitals and organizations to determine who should make up the next teams.

"Surgeons, internists, cardiologists, orthopedic surgeons, [and] pharmacists have approached us," Kripalu said. "So the goal is to provide a mix of these."

Each team, comprised of some of DMRT's 30 volunteers, will spend approximately two weeks in Nepal.  The first set of doctors could head to Nepal before the advanced team even returns, said Kripalu, who added he will provide updates on the DMRT's work through the organization's Twitter account.

"We're open to anything," he said. "We're open to working in a clinic if they need us there. We're open to going out to a field if they need us there."

"My mind is already in Nepal."

A young Arena Football League fan was hurt at the Wells Fargo Center Saturday night when a Portland Thunder player, upset over his ejection from the game, threw his helmet into the stands.

Quincy Butler -- a defensive back wearing #16 for the Thunder -- was penalized at some point during his team's loss to the Philadelphia Soul and sent his helmet flying into the crowd as he left the field.

A Soul spokesman confirmed a spectator was hit and said the League will be reviewing game footage to determine if the player will be disciplined.

With the Blue Cross Broad Street Run today, the weather is top of mind as runners and spectators make final preparations for the 10-mile dash down Broad Street.

So what is in store for race day as far as wind, possible rainfall and temperature?

First off, the chance for rain is low. And with plenty of sun (a UV Index of 8 out of 10) sunscreen will be a good idea.

"The good news is, we expect to be dry through the weekend with temperatures a little above normal for this time of year," said NBC10 meteorologist Sheena Parveen.

The high Sunday is expected to top out near 80 but that is only in the afternoon. When the race starts at 8 a.m. there should be some sunshine with temps quickly rising to around 58.

The temps could get a little warm for runners as the morning goes on with temps expected to be in the high 60s by 10 a.m.

Race day lows in the 50s are on par with many past races.

Wind could play a factor in the run with a cross wind of 8 mph from the west.
