A 21-year-old quadriplegic man's mother is in the custody of Philadelphia Police Thursday,  accused of leaving her disabled son in Philly's Cobbs Creek Park for five days with only a blanket and a Bible.

Police questioned Nyia Parler, 41, at Southwest Detectives, Thursday morning as her 21-year-old son, who has cerebral palsy, stays with family members.

Investigators said they plan to charge Parler with attempted murder, aggravated assault, simple assault, reckless endangerment and neglect of a care-dependent person.

The woman had been in Maryland since April 6 -- the day she took a bus from Philly to visit her boyfriend, officials said.

Her son, who is "non-verbal" and completely dependent on others for his care, was found in a wooded area about 100 yards from Cobbs Creek Parkway more than four days after Parler left town, officials said.

Authorities said he could have been abandoned as early as the night of April 5 -- spending several days and nights on the ground as temperatures reached lows in the 30s. Police said his wheelchair was about 10-feet away from him.

Detectives tracked down Parler in Maryland soon after the man was discovered. They issued a warrant for her arrest, but they were unable to bring her in as she dealt with an undisclosed illness in a Maryland hospital, police said.

After she recovered, Maryland authorities took Parler into custody Monday and the woman waived her extradition to Philadelphia the next day.

An attorney for Parler declined to comment.

The Statue of Liberty and Liberty Island were both deemed safe Friday afternoon about 90 minutes after the attraction was evacuated over a phoned-in bomb threat and reports of a suspicious package, authorities said.

Tourists were ferried off of the island after parks police patrolling with dogs near a locker area picked up the scent of a suspicious package shortly before 1 p.m., sources say. Around that same time, sources say, someone phoned in a  bomb threat to the statue.

The NYPD's bomb squad was called to the scene and authorities conducted a security sweep of the area. An all-clear was issued at about 2:30 p.m.

The scare set off a massive evacuation effort as hundreds of tourists were ferried off the island. Visitors tweeted photos of long lines at a pier on Liberty Island.

Several passengers who were ferried to Battery Park told NBC 4 New York they weren't told why they had to leave. They said the evacuation was hectic, if nerve-racking.

Rehab-Bound Son Faces 11 Counts After I-76 Shooting

A man remained behind bars, unable to post bail despite a judge lowering it, as he awaited trial for shooting his father in the face as they drove along the Schuylkill Expressway in Montgomery County, Pennsylvania, earlier his month.

Police said Kymere Corbin's parents were taking him to rehab when the shooting occurred along the westbound lanes of I-76 near the Conshohocken Exit on April 7.

On Friday, Judge William I. Maruszczak reduced Corbin's bail from $500,000 to $250,000 while holding the 22-year-old on 11 counts including aggravate assault, reckless endangerment and carrying an unlicensed firearms.

Corbin shot his 42-year-old father, Elbert Corbin Jr., with a gun he found in the 2010 Buick LaCrosse, according to an affidavit of probable cause obtained by NBC10.

The elder Corbin and his wife were seated in the front of the car at the time. The wife told police that they were taking Kymere Corbin to the Malvern Institute to be admitted for drug and mental health treatment when argument ensued between father and son over the father's involvement in his son's life.

Corbin then stated "look what he gave me!" as he pulled out the pistol, said the affidavit. A struggle ensued, and as Elbert Corbin tried to pry the gun away from his son, the firearm went off, police said.

Elbert Corbin survived the shooting, said police.

Corbin originally told investigators that his father took the gun from him and shot himself but later recanted and admitted to accidentally shooting his father during a struggle in the car, said police.

Corbin is set to be formally arraigned on June 10, said Maruszczak.
