Shots Fired When Gunman Tries to Mug Off-Duty Cop

An off-duty officer opened fire on a gunman, who tried to mug him as he walked his dog on an Overbrook street -- only a mile from where an eerily similar attempted robbery turned deadly and claimed the life of a local dad.

The suspect approached the off-duty officer near 58th Street and Malvern Avenue, pulled out a gun and demanded money just after 11:30 p.m. Wednesday, authorities said.

"The off-duty comes home ... and goes to walk his dog. He's minding his own business," said Philadelphia Police Captain Anthony Ginaldi. "It's a chilly night there are not too many people out here. And it appears the assailant took him for a victim."

The officer, a 5-year veteran of the 12th District, pulled out his own weapon and started shooting -- firing eight times, Ginaldi said.

"I think he was pretty much surprised when he found out that he was going to rob an off-duty police office and the officer still has his weapon on him," he continued.

The shots scared off the assailant, who hid behind several parked cars before fleeing the scene, he said.

The suspect remains on the loose. Investigators are checking local hospitals for gunshot victims, although it is unknown if the man was hit, police said.

K-9 units were brought in to try and track the gunman, and a police helicopter searched nearby alleyways by air, officials said.  The suspect's face was partially covered by a hoodie, so authorities are working off of a vague description, authorities said.

Along with the victim's five years of service with the Philadelphia Police Department, he also spent two years as an officer in Upper Darby, Ginaldi said.

Last month, three teens -- Tyfine Hamilton, 15, Brandon Smith, 15, and an unnamed 14-year-old boy -- held up 51-year-old James Stuhlman at gunpoint as the dad walked his dog near 64th Street and Woodcrest Avenue in the same section of the city, according to investigators.

Stuhlman, who the trio picked because he looked old and his dog appeared "weak," pled for his life before he was fatally shot, police said.

While the crimes are not connected, the similarities between the two incidents are alarming.

"It is a sad state that we have to deal with. I don't know that I would call it a trend," Ginaldi said. "It doesn't seem to be the way of life. But it does seem to be a problem."

"You should be aware of your surroundings at all times regardless of where you are and where you go," he warned. "This is the reality of the world we live in today and these are the challenges that we as police officers face every day."

Anyone with information on the latest incident is urged to contact Southwest Detectives at 215-686-3183.

A grand jury has recommended charges against a caseworker whose autistic client was found dead after the woman wandered out of a department store last year.

A spokesman for the district attorney's office tells The Philadelphia Inquirer that Hassanatu Wulu is expected to be charged with neglecting a dependent-care person and recklessly endangering another person.

Authorities say Wulu took a client, 37-year-old Christina Sankey, into a Macy's in downtown Philadelphia last March. The woman, who suffered severe disabilities, walked out of the store and wasn't seen until the next morning when police discovered her body about four miles away in west Philadelphia.

District Attorney Seth Williams said Wednesday that Sankey "failed at her job."

It's unclear whether Wulu has an attorney who could comment on the charges.

A strong chemical odor prompted evacuations of 50 homes Thursday morning in Trooper, Montgomery County and sent 4 people to the hospital complaining of breathing problems.

The Lower Providence Township Fire Chief said officials got the call from employees of ER Joseph Company located at 12 Woodlyn Road complaining of a strong odor of chlorine just after 9 a.m. The company manufactures compressed gas.

Officials said the source of the fumes was caused by cleaning of a tank at ER Joseph, causing fumes to become airborne.

People in homes near the intersection of South Trooper Road and Woodlyn were told to leave after some complained of difficulty breathing. A temporary shelter was set up at Lower Providence Fire Company.

Emergency officials from Lower Providence Township and Montgomery County responded to ventilate the area and take air samples before residents would be allowed back into their homes.

Residents were allowed back into their homes at noon after all ventilation was completed.

Lower Providence Township officials, Department of Environmental Protection and OSHA continued to investigate the incident.

Boy, 6, Missing After Leaving Philly Home with Brother, 19

UPDATE: Nyame Ra has been located in good condition. Stay with NBC10 for more on this developing story.

A Philadelphia mother has not seen her 6-year-old son since Wednesday night when she gave her teenage son permission to take his brother to nearby Clark Park in West Philly.

Tamir Greenfield took his younger brother, Nyame Ra, from the boy's home near 49th Street and Woodland Avenue to the park -- located only six blocks away -- around 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, police said.

Their mother called Greenfield on his cell phone only 20 minutes after they left the home, but the teen didn't answer, according to the boys' grandmother.

The mom then went searching for the pair at Clark Park, but couldn't find them, family members said.

She continued to call Greenfield -- who picked up just once, only to hang up the phone moments later, relatives said.

Authorities tracked down Greenfield Thursday morning at 36th and Market Streets in University City -- more than eight hours after a missing persons report was filed for Nyame.

Police are interviewing the teen, who his grandmother said recently began exhibiting odd behavior.

Their grandmother said it is not unusual for the teen to take his brother to parks.

Nyame is described as 4-feet tall, approximately 43 pounds, with a thin build, according to investigators. He is missing a front tooth, and has brown eyes, a medium brown complexion and close-cut black hair, authorities said. He was last seen wearing a blue hooded sweat shirt over a blue shirt, tan pants and gray Addidas sneakers with red stripes.

Anyone with information is urged to contact Southwest Detectives at 215-686-3388 or call 911.

Union Leader Gets 8 Years in Violence, Intimidation Case

The union leader accused of being the biggest advocate of using violence and intimidation to maintain power and jobs in Philadelphia will spend 8 years in prison after pleading guilty to racketeering, extortion and arson.

Edward Sweeney, 56, admitted his role in torching two sites under construction, including a Quaker meeting house in the city, and trying to set fire to a third when contractors for those jobs refused to hire union ironworkers from Local 401.

Sweeney pleaded guilty last Sept. to RICO conspiracy, maliciously damaging property by means of fire, use of fire to commit a felony and a number of related charges.

Along with his prison sentence of 96 months, U.S. District Judge Michael Baylson ordered Sweeney to pay $217,000 in restitution. When his prison term is over, Sweeney will have three years of supervised release.

Three more defendants will be sentenced in the case, which was investigated by the Federal Bureau of Investigation and the Department of Labor, Philly police and East Whiteland Twp. Police and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives.
