Thunderstorm Threat for Later Today

Heavy rain took a break late Monday morning but the worst of the wet weather could still come.

NBC10 First Alert Weather chief meteorologist Glenn "Hurricane" Schwartz issued an NBC10 First Alert for late Monday afternoon and evening as the possibility of severe thunderstorms threatened the area.

Heavy rain mixed with strong winds to cause some scattered flooding and power outages in the Philadelphia region as the first part of wet weather struck Monday. Rain, heavy at times, fell early Monday as winds gusted above 20 mph at times.

PECO reported about 10,000 outages by mid-morning with nearly 5,000 in the northern part of Philadelphia alone. The utility said some of the outages were weather related. By noon there were less than 1,000 outages. Over in New Jersey, PSE&G also reported scattered outages.

Flooding slowed traffic along the Schuylkill Expressway (I-76) near Girard Avenue. Some flooding hit areas including Chestnut Hill; Darby, Pennsylvania; along Governor Printz Boulevard in Delaware; and other areas as storm drains backed up due to heavy rainfall and debris.

Be careful when driving, especially in areas prone to flooding. Don’t drive through standing water. And, be careful of standing water from blocked drains.

Low clouds and fog remained late Monday morning. As the sun burns off the moisture Monday afternoon, the threat for severe weather increases "for the potential for severe thunderstorms with damaging winds, large hail and possibly, even, a couple of tornadoes in the area," said Glenn.

The greatest threat for severe weather late Monday afternoon was for Delaware, South Jersey, Philadelphia and the immediate suburbs where brief heavy downpours could hit.

Coyote Attacks Man Walking Dog in New Jersey: Police

$

Police say a New Jersey resident was attacked by a coyote while walking his dog Sunday.

Police have not released the extent of the man's injuries. He was attacked near McClellan Street and D'Ercole Court in Norwood.

The attack is the latest brush between humans and coyotes in the tri-state. Last week, a coyote was captured in a park near a church in Manhattan's Chelsea neighborhood.

Earlier this month, a rabid coyote attacked a Saddle River, New Jersey, man and mauled a neighbor's Labrador retriever. The dog needed about 30 stitches to close the wound left by the coyote and authorities said it would be quarantined for six months because authorities said it wasn't up to date on its rabies vaccinations.

In March, a Closter family said that two roaming coyotes took up residence in an old doghouse, howling at the moon and creating a nightly nuisance.

In January, one coyote was captured on the Upper West Side, while another was rounded up in Stuyvesant Town.

Anyone who sees a wild animal that appears sick or is acting aggressively or is unusually friendly should call police, they say. Coyotes are normally shy animals, according to the Health Department.

Authorities have noted that it's become "quite common for coyotes to enter into urban and residential areas and in many cases make small wooded areas their home," according to the New Jersey Division of Fish and Wildlife.

People who encounter a coyote should never run away; instead, they're encouraged to "haze" the animal with techniques like making loud noises or throwing sticks or objects towards but not at the coyote, the Humane Society says.

Attempted Murder Charges in Love Triangle Hit-&-Run

Beatrice Spence's life changed forever Friday afternoon after a romantic rival ran her down -- severing her leg -- moments before her house caught fire and was destroyed, her family and police told NBC10.

The intentional hit-and-run took place at 2 p.m. outside Spence's home along the 4400 block of N. 17th Street in the Nicetown section of the city, police said.

The violent act left the 24-year-old, nicknamed De-De, with an amputated leg, according to police. It also left he lover bruised and her romantic rival behind bars.

"I heard a car rev up, and then I heard a bunch of people screaming," said neighbor Jayson Massey. "Honestly, I thought she was dead. She was not responsive."

After striking Spence, surveillance video showed a white Dodge Durango speeding off eastbound on Wingohocking Street, police said. The driver of the Durango, who lives a few blocks away, knew the victim and drove up on the curb to strike her, investigators said.

As the Durango barreled toward Spence, a 37-year-old man chased after her in an attempt to keep her on the porch.

The victim's family told NBC10 that the driver, later identified by police as Precious Richardson Coleman and the victim were in an ongoing fight over the man — recently throwing bricks at each other's windows.

"She came back — the driver came back and she ran her over. She ran her over," exclaimed relative Ruby Fields.

The crash left Spence without a leg and the man with minor scrapes and bruises, said police.

Immediately after the crash, the victim's mother rushed to the hospital leaving something cooking on the stove. The house then caught fire, said the family.

No one was injured in blaze, which left the home uninhabitable.

Police began to search for Coleman, first they found her Durango with front-end damage parked along N Marvine Street early Saturday. Later that morning, police arrested Coleman at the 29-year-old's Van Pelt Street home.

Coleman was sent to county jail after being unable to post $750,000 bail after a judge arraigned her on two counts of attempted murder.
