NJ Marine Among Victims of Helicopter Crash

Neighbors of a New Jersey Marine killed in a Black Hawk helicopter crash during a training mission in Florida remembered him Friday as a hard-working teen who dreamed of being in the military.

Capt. Stanford Henry Shaw III was from Basking Ridge, and attended Ridge High School. He was killed along with 10 others when their helicopter crashed in fog Tuesday night.

His family declined to speak to a reporter Friday. But neighbors said the 31-year-old Shaw, whom they knew as Ford, had always dreamed of going into the military.

In Shaw's neighborhood on a quiet cul-de-sac in Basking Ridge, roughly 40 miles west of New York City, a person standing outside the family's house declined to comment and referred questions to the military.

In high school, Shaw found time to play lacrosse, lead his high school's student government and also work part-time at a local pizzeria, according to a neighbor.

"Just a fantastic guy," said next-door neighbor Gretchen Priore, who said she'd known Shaw since he was in high school. She said her daughters, now 3 and 9, looked up to him.

"The older one knew what he was doing, that he was going to make sure we were safe," Priore said. "He taught our girls what it means to be a hero."

Shaw attended the United States Naval Academy and, upon his graduation in 2006, became a commissioned Marine officer. After graduating from the Infantry Officer Course, he was assigned to the 1st Battalion, 7th Marines.

He served two tours of duty in Iraq, according to information provided by the Marines at Camp Lejeune.

Seven special operations Marines forces based in North Carolina and four National Guard soldiers from Louisiana were killed in the crash.

Women Who Survived 70-Foot Plunge Reunite With Rescuers

Two women who survived a 70-foot plunge in their car were reunited with their rescuers Friday, exactly one month after the near fatal accident.

"Thank you isn't even enough. I got my best friend back," said Elizabeth Wolthoff of her passenger, Rebecca Winslow.

Both women had back surgery after their car plummeted from busy Interstate 80 and landed under a Hackensack River bridge. They can walk, but they each have multiple rods and screws in their backs and have been told they'll have a certain amount of stiffness for the rest of their lives. At the time of the crash both were 25 years old.

The two women gave their rescuers - two squads from the Hackensack fire department - hugs on Friday as they reunited for the first time since the accident.

Wolthoff recalled the accident on Friday. A trucker cut her off, she said, and the next thing she knew, her car went up a ramp of ice created by a snow plow. She closed her eyes, and they landed on the bank of the Hackensack river.

"The next thing I know we were on the ground - so like, okay, so we're not in the river, that's good, I guess," said Winslow of the plunge.

Firefighters quickly found their car, and were able to save both of them with the help of the Jaws of Life.

When she realized they had survived, said Wolthoff, "I actually at first cried."

"I can honestly say after today I have seen a walking miracle," said firefighter Virgil Ulysse, one of their rescuers.

The two women hope to begin physical therapy in a few weeks, and go back to work at a day care center in Teaneck by September.

A teenager used the ruse of having to use the restroom to carry out a knife-point rape, said authorities in Montgomery County, Pennsylvania.

Montgomery Township Police responded to a tanning salon on Feb. 25 after a woman reported being forced into a sex act by an unknown man, said the Montgomery County District Attorney’s Office.

Police said Marshall Gibson, 18, entered the salon and asked to use the restroom. The Doylestown man then entered a private room, threatened a woman with a knife then demanded she perform a sex act n him, said police.

The terrified woman complied and then the suspect left, said investigators.

Police used surveillance images of a man wearing a hoodie to zero in on Gibson. They then arrested him Wednesday.

A judge arraigned Gibson on 16 counts including rape, sexual assault, aggravated assault and making terroristic threats then sent the teen to county jail after he was unable to post $25,000.

He faces a preliminary hearing on March 23.

Seals Washing Up Along NJ Beaches

An increase number of Beached Seals are coming out of the Atlantic Ocean and onto Jersey Shore beaches, said the Marine Mammal Stranding Center Friday.

Officials with the MMSC said they received eight calls about seals on beaches in Avalon, Ventnor, Long Beach Island, Bayville and Avon by the Sea. The reason for many of these mammals washing up along the shore line is because of the warmer weather over the past week.

With the increase of temperatures, many seals are traveling and chasing food, which leads them to come up the shore to rest up and get some sun.

Some useful tips if you spot a seal or another mammal on the beach would be to contact the MMSC immediately by calling (609) 266-0538 or going to their website.

Also stay at least 50 feet away from the animal and keep pets away as well, said the MMSC.

Even though these animals look cute, they can become very dangerous. Wild animals are still uncontrollable and can become very violent at any time.

NJ Mom Delivers Baby With Help of FaceTime

Keyanna Rivera had what most moms would consider an easy labor - made easier with the help of FaceTime.

"Everything happened so fast," she said Friday. "I think we got there at 11:30 - and he was out by 11:50."

Rivera had just arrived for a routine appointment at her doctor's office in Newark when her water broke. Her doctor, Meena Devalla, was at the hospital, and so the only staff on hand were the office medical assistants.

"His head was just hanging there," she said of little Raphael. "Yes, he was ready." And there was no stopping him.

Rivera's husband held up a cell phone during the unexpected delivery so that the doctor could give her staff step-by-step instructions.

Oswaida Torres, one of the assistants, had never delivered a baby - or used FaceTime.

"I was a little nervous," she said. "Thank you to the Lord that everything worked out and mommy and baby are doing great."

After it all, Rivera said she has a new outlook on technology. And she got more than one nice surprise.

"My husband," she said, "I'm surprised he didn't hit the floor."

A 27-year-old who died in custody at a New Jersey jail was killed by blunt force trauma to the head and neck, prosecutors said Friday.

David Yearby was arrested in Piscataway on Halloween on charges of assault, assaulting a police officer, resisting arrest and obstruction of the administration of justice, according to the office of the Middlesex County Prosecutor. Authorities said he had punched a 16-year-old and then punched a police officer who responded to the scene.

At the Middlesex County Adult Corrections Center in North Brunswick, he punched an inmate and struggled with corrections officers, according the the prosecutor's office. After he was placed in restraints, he was observed in apparent distress during a routine early morning check on Nov. 2. He was taken to the hospital and pronounced dead at around 5 a.m.

The autopsy revealed that a congenital heart condition contributed to his death.

There was no evidence of criminality in the death and no charges were filed, said Jim O'Neill, a spokesman for the prosecutor's office. It wasn't immediately clear if Yearby had had a lawyer.

The second pellet gun shooting of the day outside a Philadelphia rec center left a girl with an eye injury.

The shooting happened shortly before 7 p.m. as children played at the West Mill Creek Recreation Center playground in West Philly.

Someone opened fire with a pellet gun striking a girl, aged 8 or 9, in the eye, said Philadelphia Police.

The girl’s mother later took her to the hospital.

The shooting came on the heels of another BB gun shooting earlier in the day where another girl was struck, said block captain Denise Curry.

“I had two kids get shot in the face with BB guns today… thank God they were plastic pellets… she could have lost her eye,” said Curry.

It wasn’t clear who shot the weapon.

The 30-year-old father of two young boys died during a robbery at a GameStop at Hope Plaza Shopping Center on Lehigh Avenue in North Philadelphia last Thursday.

Wilson was in full uniform when brothers Carlton Hipps, 30, and Ramone Williams, 26, entered the GameStop store inside and announced the robbery, subsequently sparking a "fierce and violent" gun battle that ended with the officer being shot in the head and killed, said Homicide Capt. Darrell Clark.

"They were both firing at him," said Police Commissioner Charles Ramsey. "He was actually being hit during the exchange of gunfire but he continued to fight, continued to shoot until the fatal wound was fired and it brought him down."

Wilson is being hailed a hero and is credited with saving the lives of customers and store employees, according to Ramsey.

Williams and Hipps are charged with his murder.
