Truck Driver Surrenders in Fatal Tpk. Crash

Several months after a Pennsylvania Turnpike worker was struck and killed on the highway, the truck driver in the crash surrendered to police after he was officially charged in the death.

Efrain Jensen turned himself in to Pennsylvania State Police in King of Prussia Tuesday morning to face homicide by vehicle charges in the death of Bill McGuigan. NBC10 spoke to Jensen as police escorted him in handcuffs.

“I was trying to avoid an accident and I just winded up causing another one,” he said.

McGuigan, 61, of Ardsley, Pennsylvania, was an equipment operator working for the Pennsylvania Turnpike commission.

McGuigan was working in a construction zone back on June 1 shortly after 8 a.m. in the westbound lanes of the Turnpike in West Pikeland Township. Turnpike crews had closed the westbound right lane between mileposts 314 and 316 for maintenance work.

As they were working, a tractor trailer, that police say was driven by Jensen, entered the closed lane and struck McGuigan along with another employee. McGuigan died from his injuries while the other worker suffered minor injuries.

“He was driving in excess of the speed limit, did not give himself sufficient distance with a fully-loaded tractor trailer to stop the vehicle and had to make the decision to basically crash into these construction vehicles which ultimately killed Mr. McGuigan,” said Chester County Assistant District Attorney Chuck Gaza.

On his way out of court, Jensen had a message for McGuigan’s family.

“I’m really, really, really sorry,” he said. “And I know what they’re going through. I’ve lost family members and I’m really sorry for what they’re going through right now.”

In the weeks after the fatal crash, State Police placed radar traps in construction vehicles and caught dozens of speeders not far from where McGuigan died. Still haunted by the crash, Jensen had a warning for other drivers who speed through construction zones.

“Don’t do it,” he said. “Be careful on the road. This is very serious. It’s a serious charge and anybody could wind up where I’m at right now. So slow down.”

A 28-year-old man was arrested in connection with the drug induced death of the son of Seaside Heights Mayor Bill Akers last year.

The Ocean County Prosecutor's Officer annouced the arrest of Jashon Jamiel Brinson, of Lakewood, N.J. Tuesday. He's facing multiple charges including Manslaughter.

Twenty-nine-year-old William Akers, son of Seaside Heights mayor Bill Akers, was found dead inside a home last October from an alleged drug overdose.

Following an investigation into Akers' death, it was determine that Brinson had supplied him with the heroin that utlimately killed him, police said.

The so-called “Strict Liability in Drug-Induced Deaths” statute law was passed in the late 1980s, during the heights of the crack epidemic. It equates the act of selling drugs with homicide.

Brinson's bail was set at $250,000 cash.

The head of Atlantic City’s Fire Department is on administrative leave amid allegations of sexual harassment.

A female security worker accused Atlantic City Fire Chief Dennis Brooks of dropping his pants in front of her.

“She was appalled,” said the woman’s attorney Sebastian Ionno. “She was just in complete shock.”

Ionno told NBC10 the alleged incident occurred Thursday as Brooks, 36, was passing through a metal detector during a standard screening inside the Atlantic City Fire Department building. The woman claimed her request for Brooks to “remove metal from pockets” quickly turned inappropriate.

“At that point, Chief Brooks undid his belt, pulled down his pants and told my client he was having a bad day,” Ionno said. “Standing there in his underwear, one of the highest ranking members of the Atlantic City government.”

Ionno and the worker sent a complaint letter to the city’s attorney calling on city officials to preserve any evidence, including surveillance video, that may have captured the alleged incident. Ionno told NBC10 his client hasn’t decided yet whether she wants to file a lawsuit. At this point however, Ionno wants Brooks to be reprimanded and does not want the worker to face any repercussions.

“Even though she is concerned about the consequences against her, she felt she had to do this for herself and for other employees,” Ionno said.

NBC10 reached out to Chief Brooks throughout the day. We have not yet heard back from him. At this point, police say they are not conducting a criminal investigation. The Atlantic City Mayor’s Office told NBC10 an internal investigation is underway however.

A jury will decide the fate of a Jersey Shore woman accused of killing and dismembering her husband then moving at least twice with the remains -- keeping the body parts in her closet for years.

Attorneys made opening arguments Wednesday afternoon Atlantic County court in in the murder trial of Loretta Doyle Burroughs.

Burroughs, now 63, stands accused of stabbing her former husband, Danny Burroughs, to death inside the couple's Hamilton Township home in 2007. Prosecutors said she stuffed parts of the 66-year-old man into two containers. He was listed as missing for six years as Burroughs told people that her husband left her.

In 2013, crime scene investigators found the remains while inside Burroughs' Ventnor home while executing a search warrant for documents related to an embezzlement case. They found the containers in a closet. Officials believe the man's body was moved several times.

"From what I understand, they were there to look for some bank records for embezzlement," said Danny's daughter, Caroline Burroughs. "They weren't there looking for my father. They just stumbled upon him."

Burroughs already pleaded not guilty to murder and related offenses.

Service has been restored on two NJ Transit train lines Wednesday morning following a pair of separate incidents earlier in the morning.

The Pascack Valley line was suspended in both directions from Spring Valley to Hoboken for about three hours because of a fire on a high-tension utility line and police and fire department activity between River Edge and Oradell, NJ Transit said.

Service on the line resumed shortly before 9 a.m. and was expected to be on or close to schedule for the rest of the morning, NJ transit says.

Service on the Morris and Essex line was also suspended after a man stepped in front of a train just before 7 a.m. No one onboard was injured, but trains weren't running between Hackettstown and Denville until about 9 a.m.

Trains are running along the line but delays of 30 to 40 minutes should be expected, NJ Transit said.

10 Questions With 'The Blacklist's' Ryan Eggold

From Beverly Hills to international spy, actor Ryan Eggold has played the role of teacher twice on television but his most recently role on NBC’s hit show The Blacklist turned him from elementary school educator to covert operative. Eggold’s character Tom Keen recently returned to The Blacklist with a new look and plenty of questions about where he was in the meantime.

Eggold sat down with NBC10 to talk about his turn as Tom Keen, to give some insights into the Californian native behind the character and the Pennsylvania singing star he would love to co-star with.

Was it difficult to make the jump from 90210 to The Blacklist?

I wouldn’t say it’s difficult to make that jump. Every role is fun…. Anytime I get a new role I feel like I forget what the job is – I forget what acting is or how to do it … You sort of stumble through it until you find your way and say, ‘Alright, I think I have a semblance of who this guy might be.’ I’m just grateful to be playing a role that’s well written and multidimensional.

So where was your character Tom this whole time?

Tom was in Brazil, he joined a group of professional knitters who knit quilts and sell them for $10 apiece and he decided to come back and be an assassin. (Eggold jokes)

I actually don’t know where Tom was, I think he was regrouping. Liz let him go from the boat and when we find him again he’s sort of desperate for a job and trying to rebalance himself. I think he’s desperate for a job, not just to keep going, but to forget where he’s been and what he was and who he was with Liz. Sort of hide behind a new mask because I think he has difficulty coping with his own life.

Is Tom your favorite character you’ve played?

It’s hard to say favorite but I would definitely say I love the character and I’m super grateful to be playing him. He’s definitely, definitely on my list of Top 5 or so.

What comparisons do you draw with Tom?

I draw a few -- obviously, the sociopathic murderous tendencies I don’t share in common with him. He’s someone who pretends for a living so I can certainly relate to that. When he was the schoolteacher there was a lot of that that was closer to me as a person as terms of the more mild-mannered nature. But discovering the violence and finding those parts of yourself where you can find rage and bring those kind of things are really fun because it’s new for me.

What happened to the hair?

It was gorgeous; I’m not going to argue with you there. I didn’t shampoo (he jokes).

Tom is going on a new mission and he’s going undercover as a new character and we’re going to get more into it but it’s for his new mission – it’s a new look, a new persona.

Do you prefer it long or short?

For me personally I like both – I like change. I don’t like to stick in one look for too long... It’s a good job for that. The long hair was really fun, I dug it but the short hair is so much less work – you take a shower and you’re ready to go.

What is it like for a Southern California guy spending winters now on the East Coast?

It takes a couple of weeks for my blood to adjust and then I’m fine. This is my second winter in New York – last winter was friggin’ freezing – I think winter’s been better. Maybe I’m crazy. But I’m kind of enjoying the snow right now because I know we’re at the tail end of it. It does make for a pretty picture – with the snow-capped trees. It’s funny, growing up in California I didn’t have the snow, I didn’t have seasons, so I kind of appreciate it because I haven’t been slogging through it my whole life.

I got giant snow boots that are just big pieces of rubber on my feet and I just stomp through the snow. It’s kind of fun.

Who would you love to play in a biopic?

I gotta say Kurt Cobain but I’m 30, so it’s already too late for me. Who would be Courtney Love? Could we miss up Taylor Swift, mess her up a little bit -- give her some runny mascara or something?

What is your advice in life?

Don’t take advice from me that’s my advice. (He smiles) I guess my advice would be just to be sure of yourself, no matter what, to be self-possessed to not make your decisions based on what other people think.

What message would like to give your Blacklist viewers?

The ride that Tom is going on is really about to change and I’m really excited for people to see it. And, I’m really excited to see where this character is going, he’s really at a crossroads in his life. So we’re going to learn more about who this guy really is, finally, for the first time. About who he is without a false identity -- who he is not being the violent assassin, spy that he is -- but who he really is as a person. I’m excited to explore that.
