Tips for Driving in the Snow, Ice

A winter weather advisory has been issued for areas in southeastern Pennsylvania, southern New Jersey and northern Delaware, which means driving conditions will most likely be messy.

Snow, sleet and freezing rain will fall in the area through 4 a.m. Monday, said NBC10 First Alert Meteorologist Michelle Grossman.

As temperatures continue to plummet, ice will accumulate in addition to the snow that falls beforehand.

Cold and wet conditions will cause dangerous driving conditions for Sunday as well as Monday's morning commute, said NBC10 First Alert Meteorologist Michelle Grossman.

As snow and ice impact the region, experts from AAA are offering motorists safe-driving tips during their commute.

Tips for driving in the snow and ice:

  •  Let the road crews do their job - stay six car lengths behind plow crews and salt trucks
  • Clean your car completely before you head out
  •  Slow down - Drivers are more likely to lose control of the vehicle when roads are snowy, icy or wet
  •  Increase following distance - This will allow time for a controlled stop.
  •  Know when to brake and when to steer - When traveling over 25 MPH, AAA recommends steering rather than braking to avoid a collision in wintry conditions, as less distance is required to steer around an object than to brake to a stop. In slick conditions, sudden braking can lead to loss of vehicle control.
  •  Do not use cruise control and avoid tailgating - Normal following distances of three to four seconds for dry pavement should be increased to eight to 10 seconds when driving on icy, slippery surfaces.
  • Don’t stop going up a hill. There’s nothing worse than trying to get moving up a hill on an icy road. Get some inertia going on a flat roadway before you take on the hill.
  • All-wheel drive helps in the snow, but it won’t help in the ice. Beware of icing later tonight.

What to do in a front wheel skid:

  • Continue to look where you want to go.
  • Steer in the direction you want the front of the vehicle to go.
  •  Avoid slamming on the brakes. Although hitting the brakes is a typical response, slamming the brakes will only further upset the vehicle’s balance and make it harder to regain control.
  • Wait for the front wheels to grip the road again. As soon as traction returns, the vehicle will start to steer again.
  • When the front wheels have regained their grip, steer the wheels gently in the desired direction of travel.

Sleet and freezing rain are causing dangerous travel conditions across the Delaware Valley, leading officials to urge drivers to stay off the roads as they continue to respond to dozens of accidents across the region.

A multivehicle crash occurred on Route 206 between 537 and 670 in Mount Holly around 2:15 p.m., according to officials, who said at least eight people were taken to local hospitals.

Authorities closed Route 206 in both directions while they investigated. The road was reopened around 5 p.m.

Another collision on Interstate 295 in East Greenwich, Gloucester County caused delays from exit 18 to mile post 11, according to police. A few other accidents occurred in Gloucester, Burlington, Camden and Mercer counties, but police said none were serious.

NJ Transit announced late Sunday afternoon passengers can use their tickets and passes for alternative travel modes -- rail, light rail or bus.

Officials reported more than 50 minor accidents in Delaware, all happening after 12:30 p.m.. Kent County had at least 26 fender benders, New  Castle County had 27 and Sussex county had five.

Crews in Lehigh, Montgomery, Chester, Delaware and Bucks counties said they responded to more than 20 minor crashes. So far no major injuries have been reported.

In Philadelphia, the Streets Department deployed 85 salt trucks to treat the city's streets. No serious accidents have been reported in Philly.

PennDOT issued a speed restriction on all highways -- motorists should not exceed 45 miles per hour. The state's transportation department sent out more than 350 trucks to salt the roads.

Officials at Philadelphia International Airport reported several hundred cancelations.

Travelers heading to the airport should check their flight status by calling 1-800-PHL-GATE or visiting PHL.org.

Stay Safe on Icy Sidewalks: Walk Like a Penguin

$

The trick to balancing on slick sidewalks is to “walk like a penguin."

At least, that’s the advice coming out of Little Baby’s Ice Cream in Northern Liberties.

Instinct tells us to do the opposite and center our weight mid-stride, which works on dry walkways.

However this tactic forces legs to split your body weight in half and rely on both feet to maintain balance -- not the best idea for icy streets.

The local ice cream parlor posted a simple infographic on their blog to remind everyone to think of gravity and mimic penguins. Shifting one’s weight onto the front leg keeps people – and penguins – from slipping.

The Center for Disease Control and Prevention backs up the penguin waddle claim, reminding people to also spread feet slightly to fortify the center of gravity.

With sidewalks freezing over, remember to stay smart and give yourself extra time to waddle to and fro.

One more tip, keep your hands out of your pockets and wear a puffy coat…so if you do fall, at least you can catch yourself and cushion your buns.

Truck Goes Through Ice in NJ

$

A man faces possible criminal charges in connection with an intensive search by police, firefighters and the U.S. Coast Guard for a pickup truck that cracked through the ice and sank in a southern New Jersey river, authorities said.

Andrew Mayer, 27, of Toms River, the driver of the truck, was questioned by police after the search, said New Jersey State Police spokesman Sgt. Greg Williams. He was released, but charges are pending, he said.

A bystander called police at about 12:15 a.m. Sunday after seeing the small truck drive onto the frozen Toms River and begin a series of "donuts," investigators said. The truck's headlights and brake lights could be seen from the shoreline. As the truck headed for the opposite side of the river, the lights disappeared, police said.

Area police and firefighters searched for the truck and were joined by a helicopters dispatched by the Coast Guard and the New Jersey State Police. The submerged truck was spotted at about 10:20 a.m., about 100 feet from shore, police said.

A rescue diver was lowered to the truck and found a dead boxer-mix dog inside, police said. The dog belonged to Mayer, police said.

The multi-agency search cost "hundreds of thousands of dollars," a police source estimated.

A passenger in the truck, Daniel Joly, 25, also of Toms River, told investigators that he argued with Mayer about driving on the frozen river and got out of the vehicle, Willams said.

Investigators suspect alcohol may have been involved when the driver of the truck took it out onto the ice, said Maj. Robert Yaiser, the state police commanding officer for special operations.

The Ocean County Prosecutor's Office ultimately will decide whether to file charges in the case.

Ice Will Melt, More Snow to Come

$

People woke up Monday morning to slippery sidewalks, cars crusted in a shell of ice and the promise of warmth seeming farther and farther away.

Ice-covered sidewalks and roads made for treacherous travel conditions during morning rush hour causing hundreds of schools to open late. The rest of the day will be dry and sunny, but winds will increase making highs in the low 40s feel colder.

High temps will cause melting throughout the day and when combined with strong wind the roads should be relatively dry by this evening.

“Anything left on the ground tonight will freeze, but there shouldn’t be much left,” said NBC10 First Alert Weather meteorologist Bill Henley. Gusts will reach speeds in the teens as temps will fall to a low around 20 overnight Monday into Tuesday.

Another storm is set to move in Tuesday with a chance of snow before 4 p.m., according to the National Weather Service. Little accumulation is expected and highs will reach the mid-30s.

We are likely to see sleet after 5 p.m. turning to ice. The Tuesday evening commute could be slippery as the rain freezes on the roads.

Wednesday promises warmer, but wetter, weather. You should expect to wake up to rain in the morning that will continue throughout the day. The highs are predicted to reach up to 47 degrees

More snow could be on the way.

“The weather system from Wednesday will turn to snow on Thursday,” Henley said.

Expect a wet week and check back with NBC10's Frist Alert Weather Team for the latest conditions.

House Explodes When Man Turns on Bathroom Light

A New Jersey home exploded after a resident woke up and turned on the bathroom light early Monday.

The blast around 1:40 a.m. Monday inside a rear unit home along Cooks Lane near Niblick Street in Point Pleasant Beach, New Jersey left a resident with burns over half his body.

The groggy 47-year-old woke up to the smell of gas and went into the bathroom where he turned on the light, said the Ocean County Prosecutors Office. The gas quickly ignited.

Firefighters rushed to the scene to find the home completely engulfed in flames and the man outside the home. He was conscious despite suffering burns to 40 to 50 percent of his body, said officials.

Medics rushed the burn victim to Jersey Shore University Medical Center before transferring him to Saint Barnabas Burn Center where he remained in critical condition Monday afternoon.

Point Beach firefighters extinguished the blaze and New Jersey Natural Gas secured the gas meter without further incident allowing for county fire officials and crime scene investigators to determine exactly what led to the leak that caused the explosion.

This blast came less than a week after 15 people were hurt when a Stafford Township home exploded as crews addressed a gas main leak. Point Pleasant Beach is about 30 miles north of Stafford Township.

New Jersey Natural Gas urges anyone who smells gas — a rotten eggs-like odor — to immediately evacuate the building and only use your cellphone to call NJNG (800-GAS-LEAK) once you are at a safe distance from the home since a phone can spark the gas.
