"Black Madam" Trial: Prosecutors Press Silicone Makers

Prosecutors asked the makers of silicone allegedly lethally administered by a Philadelphia woman whether or not employees discuss the potential dangers of its products with its customers.

Padge Victoria Windslowe, also known as “Black Madam,” is accused of injecting the liquid silicone into the buttocks of several women. One of those women, 20-year-old Claudia Aderotimi, died after the substance spread to her heart and lungs.

Derek Crump is Vice President and General Manager of Texas-based Neely Industries, which is the maker of the silicone. The company consists of four employees and specializes in selling industrial products.

Prosecutors say Windslowe bought 18 shipments of over a 4-year period under the name of Dr. James Taterka, a local Gastroenterology Specialist at Hillmont G.I. in Flourtown, Pennsylvania. Taterka, who testified Tuesday that he had an affair with Windslowe, denies ever ordering the shipments.

Defense lawyers asked Crump whether employees discuss the nature of its products with customers. Crump said his employees contact buyers to confirm safe delivery of shipments but don’t discuss any potential uses or dangers of the product.

The prosecution could wrap up its testimonies by Monday. The defense team will then bring their witnesses to the stand.

Closing arguments are expected within the next two weeks.

Hearing for Parking Garage Rape Suspect

A man accused of beating and raping a woman inside a Philadelphia parking garage will find out if his case will go to trial.

Steven Woodson, 32, is expected in court Thursday for a preliminary hearing and faces rape, attempted murder, robbery, aggravated assault and related charges in the violent assault that took place New Years morning on the second floor of a parking garage located at 17th and Callowhill streets in the city's Spring Garden section shortly before 11 a.m.

The 33-year-old woman, who Philadelphia Police said was visiting from out of town, suffered multiple injuries during the daylight attack, which occurred as locals and tourists headed to New Year's Day events throughout the city.

The suspect in the attack choked the woman until she lost consciousness, investigators said. The woman awoke between two parked cars with the suspect on top of her demanding she remove the battery from her iPhone, which cannot be done, investigators said.

Investigators brought Woodson in for questioning at the department's Special Victims Unit in Hunting Park after the incident and eventually charged him with the beating and rape.

Court records from the Pittsburgh area show Woodson spent four months in jail after being charged with indecent exposure, open lewdness and harassment from an incident last May. He posted bail in September and that case was pending a jury trial.

Hearing in SEPTA Station Attempted Rape Case

A man accused of sexually assaulting a woman at a Center City SEPTA station will be in court Thursday to face charges.

Reginald Green beat up a woman after she refused his sexual advances, said Philadelphia Police.

Green, 26, has remained behind bars — unable to post 10 percent of $1 million bail — since his arrest on aggravated assault, indecent assault and attempted rape earlier this month.

Investigators said a 27-year-old woman was trying to get home when she entered the concourse of the Jefferson Station at 10th and Filbert streets around midday on Feb. 9.

Investigators said she was lost while trying to get to Northeast Philadelphia when she spotted the suspect and asked him for directions. The two then carried on a conversation for about 30 minutes inside the station.

The suspect and the woman went into a secluded area — off the platform — where Green asked for sex before beating, kicking and sexually assaulting the woman, said Philadelphia Police Special Victims Unit Captain John Darby.

"He basically pummeled her, he beat her with his fist, kicked her repeatedly," said Darby. "She suffered injuries to her face."

After the struggle, Green fled on foot in an unknown direction.

Police said surveillance video played a key role in Green's arrest late Tuesday. They said he has 11 previous arrests and was recognized by some members of law enforcement.

Stay off the dunes! Even if it's only for sledding.

Sand dunes are closed year-round to pedestrian traffic and activities, even when there is snow cover.

The ocean dunes contain fragile ecosystems that protect beaches and the communities that border them. To prevent further damage the Delaware Department of Natural Resources and Environmental Control asks that people refrain from sledding.

With more snow in the forecast, the DNREC asks the public to remember that sledding and snowboarding are forbidden on the dunes.

A Philadelphia-bound flight returns to Ireland Thursday to make an emergency landing due to mechanical issues.

US Airways Flight 723 returned to Dublin Airport shortly after taking off around 11:15 local time Thursday.

The Boeing 757-200 then returned to the airport about 90 minutes later because one of the wing slats didn’t retract, said American Airlines spokeswoman Victoria Lupica.

Lupica said that such an incident is rather routine despite being considered an emergency landing. None of the 126 passengers on board suffered any injuries and the plane landed safely.

TheJournal.ie reported Irish emergency responders were called to the scene as a precaution.

Lupica said that it wasn’t clear when the 8-hour flight that was due to land at Philadelphia International Airport around 2:15 p.m. EST would be back in the air. The airline would do its best to re-accommodate passengers.

A New Jersey father was arrested on child porn charges after police executed a search warrant at his home in a sexual assault investigation involving his teenage son, prosecutors say.

Richard Stoldt, 58, and James Stoldt, 19, were arrested after the search at their Midland Park home in Bergen County Tuesday.

Prosecutors had been investigating James Stoldt for an alleged sexual assault of a now 14-year-old girl. According to the Bergen County prosecutor's office, James Stoldt assaulted the girl when she was 13, but she only recently disclosed to a friend what happened.

The friend contacted police, who in turn interviewed the girl and then went to arrest James Stoldt, prosecutors said.

When authorities executed a search warrant at his home, they seized computers that allegedly revealed that both James Stoldt and his father Richard were each accessing child pornography independently.

James Stoldt was arrested on sex assault and child endangerment charges, while Richard Stoldt, a software engineer, was arrested on a charge of child endangerment.

The teen was remanded to Bergen County Jail on $125,000 bail and Richard Stoldt was released on his own recognizance.

Attorney information wasn’t available. A person who picked up the phone at the number listed for the residence hung up when asked for a comment.

Two businesses were destroyed and several others were heavily damaged in a three-alarm fire in New Jersey Thursday morning, fire officials say.

The blaze broke out at a strip mall on Main Street in Sayreville at about 7 a.m. and spread through a pizzeria, liquor store and other businesses, fire officials say.

The blaze was brought under control within a few hours, but the pizzeria and liquor store were gutted in the blaze. Several other businesses sustained smoke and water damage.

No one was injured in the fire.

A dry cleaner was among the businesses damaged, Sayreville Fire Department officials say. The dry cleaner told authorities he would be removing and restoring clothes and other items at another location.

Police and fire marshals are investigating the cause of the blaze.
