Snow to Hit, Delaware, South Jersey Thurs.

Snow is expected to hit some parts of our area during the Thursday morning rush.

After a dry Wednesday with temperatures in the mid-30’s, a mix of rain and snow could graze the area south and east of Philadelphia.

“South Jersey and Delaware have the best chance for accumulating snow during the Thursday morning rush,” said NBC10 First Alert Weather Meteorologist Sheena Parveen. “Right now if the storm stays on the track that looks more likely, it could drop a few inches at least in South Jersey and Delaware. But any small shift in the track could mean big changes either way.”

The system should clear out by mid-day Thursday and temperatures will be in the mid-20’s to end the week. Temperatures will then be in the single digits to start the weekend and there’s also a chance of a wintry mix Sunday morning, including a period of freezing rain, before it changes to rain during the day.

Stay with NBC10.com for the latest details on the expected timeline and estimated snow totals as they come in.

Coach in NJ Hazing Scandal Reassigned to Elementary School

The former football coach at the scandal-plagued Sayreville War Memorial High School will keep a teaching job in the system, but not at the high school.

George Najjar lost his football head coaching job after seven players were involved in hazing incidents last fall classified as sexual assaults by the Middlesex County Prosecutor.

Najjar was reassigned by the Sayreville School Board to Dwight D. Eisenhower Elementary School, where there are no locker rooms.

The alleged sexual assaults at the high school occurred in the football players' locker room when none of the coaches were present after practice.

"This concludes our investigation into the events that took place within our football program this fall," Superintendent Dr. Richard Labbe said in a statement.

The board also approved new guidelines for all athletic coaches in the future, including taking anti-harassment, intimidation and bullying courses at least twice every five years.

"We are dedicated to continually educating all members of our school community in what harassment, intimidation, and bullying is, particularly in extra-curricular and athletic activities, and what their moral, ethical, and legal obligations are in addressing it," Labbe's statement said.

Najjar, who according to sources likely will never coach again in any capacity in Sayreville, will be allowed to keep his teaching tenure with his transfer to the elementary school, but under the negotiated agreement, will also see his salary completely frozen for the next school year.

Labbe has already said a search is underway for a new head football coach, and that the program suspended last fall will be back on the gridiron in September.

An animal apparently caused a New Jersey store to go up in flames.

A Gloucester Township Police officer spotted heavy smoke coming from an unoccupied unit of the Glendora Plaza along Black Horse Pike in Glendora around 9:25 p.m. Tuesday.

The officer called in firefighters and police evacuated a nearby home.

Officers blocked off Black Horse Pike from Station Avenue to Chews Landing Road for about two hours as firefighters extinguished the flames — keeping the blaze from spreading to neighboring businesses, said police.

One township police officer was treated for minor smoke inhalation and released.

An investigation determined that a heater damaged by an animal caused the blaze and investigators didn't consider the fire suspicious.

The AMBER ALERT for a 3-year-old girl who police say was abducted by her father was canceled Tuesday.

Elinor Trotta and her father Michael Trotta were both found safe in Massachusetts.

"Today is my birthday," said Elinor's mother Dawn Barkus. "I prayed to God all day to get her back and He gave me the best b-day present ever. I'm gonna get my Elinor back."

The girl and her father were found at an apartment complex in Spencer, Massachusetts Tuesday around 3:30 p.m. Trotta was walking with his daughter out of the complex when he was met by an FBI SWAT team who cornered him and arrested him without incident, police said.

Warrants remain on file for Trotta's arrest in Delaware stemming from an assault on Feb. 15, as well as charges for Monday's incident, which include reckless endangerment and carjacking. He will also be charged with endangering the welfare of a child and is awaiting extradition back in Delaware.

"We appreciate the assistance of the Federal Bureau of Investigations, the US Attorney General’s Office, The Delaware Attorney General’s Office, and the many state and local agencies which included the New Jersey State Police, Massachusetts State Police, and the Spencer Police Department," a New Castle County Police spokesperson said.

Officials are in the process of taking Barkus to Massachusetts so that she can reunite with her daughter.

"I got to talk to her on the phone," Barkus said. "She's shaken but ready to be back with me."

The AMBER ALERT was issued in Delaware, New Jersey and Ohio after Trotta, 43, allegedly took Elinor from her home.

Barkus told police that Trotta, who is her ex-boyfriend, assaulted her at her home on the 800 block of East Basin Road in New Castle, Delaware around 6:45 p.m. Monday and then took their young daughter.

Delaware State Police issued the alert after New Castle County Police determined the girl was in "imminent danger." Investigators initially believed Trotta had fled with his daughter to New Jersey and New York City. During Tuesday's press conference, police said they believe Trotta was in Massachusetts because he has family there.

Cooper CEO's Wife Died of Stab Wound

The wife of a prominent New Jersey dealmaker who was found dead alongside her husband inside their burning home died of a stab wound to the chest.

The wound punctured Joyce Sheridan’s aorta, state Attorney General's Office spokesman Paul Loriquet confirmed to NBC10.

Firefighters found Sheridan and her husband, former Cooper Health CEO John Sheridan Jr. in the burning master bedroom of their Montgomery Township, New Jersey home in late September.

The AG's office gave no cause of death for John Sheridan. The New Jersey Office of the Medical Examiner has yet to issue officials causes of death in the case.

A neighbor called 911 to report the fire shortly early on Sept. 28.

When rescuers arrived at the Sheridan home they found 72-year-old John Sheridan dead and his 69-year-old wife clinging to life. The retired schoolteacher died a short time later at a hospital.

John Sheridan was found under a large armoire and had been stabbed in the neck; his jugular may have been slashed, according to a source. He was also stabbed on one side, the source said. Joyce Sheridan's brother Peter Mitchko said that his brother-in-law's wounds were largely on the right side and that he had also suffered broken ribs.

John Sheridan was well-known in New Jersey political and business circles.

Sheridan was active in New Jersey politics before joining Cooper in 2005 and is credited with helping transform the health care system, including adding a cancer center and medical school. Mrs. Sheridan was a teacher at South Brunswick High School who had a passion for helping students in need.

"The death of our parents has left a hole in our hearts and family that can never be filled," the family said in a statement.

No arrests have been made or suspects named in the case.

What Caused the Bright Green Stream?

0

People in Delaware noticed something strange in the water earlier this week that might have had them thinking that Slimer was in town.

The green water flowing down a drainage ditch at Phillips Park and along other area waterways was nothing more than a dye, however, stemming from a pipe break in nearby University of Delaware.

About 500 gallons of chilled water containing a fluorescent green dye — used as a leak tracer — leaked from a cooling system of inside Purnell Hall along Amstel Avenue, said school spokeswoman Donna O’Brien.

"There was a cracked pipe and it leaked into the sewer system," said O'Brien.

The bright-colored tracer was being used to track the root of the original break.

"The water contains a nontoxic florescent dye ... it's not harmful to health or the environment," said O'Brien. "It's just a very bright green."

Crews located the source of the leak and fixed the problem Monday night but the green river continued to raise eyebrows even after it washed away.

The tracer used in Delaware appears to be similar to a green dye that raised eyebrows in Philadelphia’s Northern Liberties neighborhood a few years ago that left people wondering if the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles were living under the street.

A bloody night in Philadelphia left three dead and one injured in three separate shootings in three different neighborhoods.

Two men, both 23, died when gunfire rang out at 27th and Latona Streets in Grays Ferry around 2:30 a.m. Thursday, said Philadelphia police.

One man who was carrying a revolver in his pocket when he arrived at a hospital was hit in the head, chest and arm. The second man was shot multiple times in the leg and torso.

At least 9 shell casings from a 9mm semi-automatic weapon were seen on the scene. A woman died in a North Philadelphia shooting around 11:30 p.m. Monday, police said.

A hunt for a suspect and a motive is underway, according to police.

The 34-year-old was driving a Lincoln Town Car in Kensington when 11 shots were fired on the 200 block of West Westmoreland Street. She managed to drive away from the scene before passing out behind the wheel and crashing into three parked cars.

She was taken to Temple University Hospital where she died. Police don’t have a suspect or a motive for the shooting.

Also overnight, a bullet grazed a man in Southwest Philly.

The victim was getting into his car on the 6700 block of Guyer Street when two suspects approached him from behind and open fire shortly before 2 a.m., police said.

The man, grazed in the temple, drove himself to the 12th Police District and was taken to the hospital. The victim is expected to survive, police said.

Police have not identified any victims in any of the shootings.

Southbound lanes reopened on Route 17 in New Jersey after being closed for several hours following a tractor-trailer crash.

It’s unclear what caused the crash, which happened just after 12:30 a.m. Thursday in Rochelle Park by Prospect Avenue.

The truck appeared to have slammed into a building by the highway before rolling over on its side.

Officials were able to move the truck off the highway and into a nearby parking lot. Some power lines were being repaired following the crash.

The tractor-trailer was the only vehicle involved in the crash. The driver was able to get himself out of the truck.
