Storm to Drop Snow Across Region Saturday

A blast of heavy snow is expected over parts of the Delaware Valley Saturday, making travel treacherous in the late afternoon and evening.

The snowstorm will develop late Saturday morning as temperatures hover in the teens. The white stuff will start to fall in parts north and west of Philadelphia around noon. It will reach the city, the surrounding suburbs and New Jersey by 5 p.m.

The snow will fall quickly at times -- as fast as one to two inches per hour, according to the National Weather Service.

Warmer air moves into the area around dinnertime, causing the precipitation to turn into a wintry mix.

Philly will see a mix of snow, sleet and freezing rain beginning around 9 p.m. before shifting completely to rain overnight.

About 2 to 4 inches will fall in Philly and along the I-95 corridor, 3 to 6 inches in suburbs north and west of the city, 5 to 8 inches in the Poconos, and no more than an inch will accumulate in South Jersey and Delaware.

The impending storm led the NWS to issue a Winter Storm Warning for much of the region, including Berks and Lehigh counties, and parts of Chester, Bucks and Montgomery counties in Pennsylvania from noon Saturday to 6 a.m. Sunday, as well as a Winter Weather Advisory for Philadelphia, Delaware County and parts of Montgomery and Bucks counties in Pennsylvania, and Mercer and Somerset counties in New Jersey from noon Saturday to 1 a.m. Sunday.

The snow followed dangerously cold temperatures Saturday as the region woke up to single digits.

Saturday's high temperature will hit 29 degrees. The region will dry out Sunday as we warm up to temps in the mid-40s. But the break from the bitter cold will be brief -- more frigid air brings the temps back down into the teens and low 20s for the work week.

Icy Conditions Disrupt Cape-May Lewes Ferry

For the third day in a row, icy conditions on the Delaware Bay caused officials to cancel the Cape May-Lewes Ferry.

The first roundtrip run of Saturday morning, which normally departs Cape May at 7:30 a.m. and the leaves Lewes at 9.15 a.m., was canceled Friday. Authorities canceled the remaining day's trips -- including the 11 a.m. and 6 p.m. from Cape May and the 12:45 p.m. and 7:45 p.m. from Lewes -- early Saturday morning.

The ferry line, which shuttles pedestrians and vehicles 17 miles across the bay between Cape May, New Jersey and Lewes, Delaware, can't ship off because of an ice jams in the Cape May Canal and Lewes dock.

Thursday and Friday ferry runs were canceled after tug boats were unable to break up the ice, according to the Delaware River and Bay Authority.

Arctic air and strong winds produced ice buildup along small canals and narrow sections of rivers like the Delaware and Schuylkill farther north.

Travelers are urged to check the Sunday schedule by calling 1-800-64-FERRY or visiting the website.

The break happened along the 3000 block of Tulip Street, between Ann and Clearfiled streets, around 9 a.m. Saturday.

Water poured into homes on both sides of the street forcing authorities to evacuate 27 residents.

Water was cut off as crews worked to repair the break, and electric and gas lines were shut off as a precautionary measure.

It is unclear how long it will take to fix the situation.
