'Cheer Mom,' Accused of Sex With Teen, in Court

A suburban Philadelphia mother, who police say had sex with a teenage boy at a public park, is set to be formally arraigned Wednesday.

Upper Pottsgrove, Montgomery County police accused Iris Gibney of sexting and corrupting a 17-year-old soccer player last year.

Police uncovered the alleged inappropriate relationship when a township officer said he found the 42-year-old Pottstown woman and the teen naked inside a parked car. The car was illegally parked in Hollenbach Park in Pottstown, Pennsylvania, after closing late on Nov. 15.

As the officer approached the car, he saw Gibney performing a sex act on the teen, according to an affidavit of probable cause obtained from police.

The Pottsgrove High School student said he met Gibney at a high school football game earlier this school year, police said. She had been volunteering as a "cheer mom" for the cheerleading team that her daughter is a part of.

Confronted about the alleged affair, the teen told the officer he couldn't lie and admitted he was having sex with Gibney, according to police records.

Gibney, who works as an associate at Victoria's Secret in King of Prussia, told the officer, "I’ve never been in trouble before. I can't believe I did this. I have three children of my own — I am so, so sorry," according to the arrest report.

Further investigation revealed Gibney and the teen communicated through Twitter and a public chat room. The mother of three then sent the boy several partially nude photos from her cellphone to his, police said.

As part of their investigation, police confiscated the boy's phone and found the sexts from Gibney, investigators said.

Gibney faces corruption of a minor, dissemination of explicit materials to a minor and trespass by auto. Wednesday's arraignment is set for 9:30 a.m.

While free on $50,000 unsecured bail, Gibney hasn't spoken about the case, however her lawyer spoke on her behalf.

After an earlier hearing, attorney Furtunato Perri Jr. called his client a “devoted and loving mother and wife” who is trying to move on with her life.

“She is heartbroken at the decision that she made under these circumstances,” said Perri.

Casey: Fix Up 30th Street Before Pope, DNC

0
0

The senior U.S. senator from Pennsylvania is asking Amtrak to speed up its plans to fix up 30th Street Station before the masses arrive to see Pope Francis and take part in the Democratic National Convention.

Senator Bob Casey, D-Pa., made a public push for quick improvements during a speech inside the station's historic arrivals hall on Wednesday morning.

The senator said the 82-year-old station should have better dining and retail options for the 11 million  visitors it handles each year. It also needs upgrades to basic services like bathrooms, he said.

"I've been to the restrooms. I know what they're like. There are a lot of good things about them, [but] just like you have to upgrade a house, you need basic changes," he said.

City officials are expecting some 2 million visitors to descend on Philadelphia in September when Pope Francis visits to take part in the World Meeting of Families conference and celebrate mass on the Benjamin Franklin Parkway.

The following summer, in July 2016, thousands of Democrats will come to the city to choose their next candidate for President of the United States during the 2016 Democratic National Convention.

In addition to the public plea, Casey sent a letter outlining his ask to Amtrak's CEO.

"This historic facility provides for many visitors the first introduction to Philadelphia, or Pennsylvania as a whole, and we need to ensure it presents the best picture of what the Commonwealth has to offer for the millions of visitors that come to Philadelphia each year," Casey wrote in the letter.

An external renovation of the station, which is Amtrak's third busiest, has been ongoing. A new western plaza is under construction, new signage is being installed and the infrastructure below the station is being renovated.

Casey said Amtrak has already drawn up plans to revitalize the station's interior and he urged them to move forward quickly. He said the station could offer similar dining and shopping options to Union Station in Washington, D.C., which has fast food and full-service restaurants as well as a shopping center.

"I want it to be the best place that it can be," he said.

Amtrak spokesman Craig Schultz said the publicly-funded corporation appreciates Casey's support.

"We support the Senator’s call for both long- and near-term improvements to this nearly 100-year-old historic building and will work closely with all the stakeholders involved to identify funding and support for priority projects that are consistent with the vision we are now developing under the 30th Street Station District Plan with our various partners," Schultz said.

Casey said the interior renovation would most likely need a lot of private financial support before it could come to fruition. He said there doesn't appear to be additional federal funds available.

Thomas Glennon, principal of Linden Hill Elementary School in Wilmington, announced a snow day Tuesday by filming a selfie and singing a song.

Rewriting “Ho Hey” by The Lumineers to notify students and parents that school was closed, he sang through the entire song replacing “Ho Hey” with “Snow Day.”

The YouTube video opens at 5 a.m. with Glennon surrounded by Curious George and other stuffed animals inside his home.

Glennon sang, “I belong at school. You belong at school. But not today. I belong at school. You belong at school. It’s a snow day.”

Most of the comments claim that Glennon is "the funniest principal ever." That sense of humor comes out for sure at the end as Glennon makes a snow angel outside his home.

Petition for College Suicide Prevention Nears Goal

A petition aimed at preventing college suicides is rapidly approaching its goal of 10,000 signatures.

The petition was originally put into circulation following the death of Madison Holleran, a freshman and track and field athlete at the University of Pennsylvania. Holleran jumped off of a parking garage in Philadelphia while suffering from depression at Penn.

Holleran was a former track star at Northern Highlands Regional High School, where she was taught by Ed Modica, the now-retired Allendale teacher who started the petition.

"As long as something is passed in her honor to help other young adults, then I'm pleased," Modica told nj.com.

As of Wednesday afternoon, the petition had topped 8,700 signatures.

Concern After Fires Sparked While Thawing Pipes

0
0

Fire officials in Bensalem, Pennsylvania are warning residents to take extra care while trying to thaw frozen pipes. The reminder comes after two serious fires were sparked in the past week from people using a heat gun to warm up the pipes during the recent Arctic blast.

"If you have to use a hair dryer or a heat gun, don’t use it for an extended period of time," Bensalem Township Fire Rescue Battalion Chief Robert Sponheimer said.

Last Friday, a homeowner on the 400 block of Wicker Avenue trained a heat gun on a pipe for more than an hour and a half trying to thaw it out, Sponheimer said.  The constant heat caused the wood and insulation in the house's outer wall to ignite.

The homeowner used a fire extinguisher to put the fire out and didn't think he needed to call 911, Sponheimer said. Unbeknownst to him, however, the fire continued to smolder.

"Within 45 minutes, the fire had grown and burned through the wall," the battalion chief said.

Bensalem Fire Rescue was then called to put out the blaze which left the home seriously damaged. A firefighter suffered a minor hand injury while putting out the fire.

Four days later, on Tuesday, two maintenance workers used a heat gun to thaw out a pipe in the attic of Building 25 at the Franklin Commons Apartments at 1400 Cardinal Drive.

Again, these workers left the gun on for a long time and it sparked a small fire which they put out with a fire extinguisher, according to Sponheimer. Just like the other fire, it smoldered and reignited destroying the building's electrical service. As a result, 35 people remain displaced.

"If you’re using them and you have a small fire, call for help," Sponheimer said. "Firefighters can use a thermal imaging camera to see if it is actually safe."

Sponheimer said the town sees a few fires like this every year, but not so close together and so similar.

With temperatures expected to drop near or below zero degrees later this week, officials want to remind homeowners be safe.

"Keep your faucet dripping at night. It's harder for pipes to freeze if there's moving water," Sponheimer said.

If you have to use heat to try and thaw the pipes, Sponheimer said to only do it in short increments like 15 minute spans and allow the area to cool.

An even worse idea than a heat gun? A blow torch.

"What we really don’t people using is any type of open flames," Sponheimer said.
