Buildings Freeze Over After West Philly Fire

Flames shot from the roof of a three-story building in West Philadelphia for hours early Monday as firefighters battled freezing temperatures to bring the blaze under control.

The fire broke out around 4:45 a.m. inside the Locust Medical Center building at 52nd and Locust Streets, fire officials tell NBC10. Fire crews struck a second alarm shortly after arriving on scene.

The building houses doctor's offices and other medical facilities. Officials on scene originally said the building was abandoned, but that was determined not to be true.

The fire was placed under control just before 6:30 a.m., officials said. 52nd Street remained closed  between Chestnut and Spruce Streets because of the fire activity.

No one was hurt, but a combination of gusty winds and extreme cold made knocking down the blaze difficult.

Water being used to fight the fire froze to about an inch thick on sidewalks, cars and trees nearby, crews on scene tell NBC10. On the building, which was constantly doused with water, an even thicker coating of ice blanketed walls and power lines.

Philadelphia Fire Department Deputy Chief James Bonner said firefighters were slipping and falling "all over the place."

Some crews were forced to smash ice off of their trucks before they could leave the scene and not all of the equipment is ready to be put back into service.

"We don't shut down hose lines because you have to keep the water moving," Bonner said. "You'll literally have a hose line that's a log of water and we have many companies leaving this fire ground today with just logs on top of their trucks and they have to go back and thaw everything out."

Officials contacted fire departments in Canada looking for advice on thawing out equipment. They also asked for tips to keep hoses and other equipment from freezing at fire scenes as the Arctic cold is expected to linger for the rest of this week.

Wedding Proposal Under the Rainbow

A Philadelphia couple has a marriage proposal to remember, after San Diego-based artist Dan McGeorge inadvertently captured the special moment off the California coast.

While vacationing in California on Jan. 31, Robert Treml got down on one knee and popped the question to his girlfriend Meghan Peart. During the proposal, McGeorge was photographing stunning views of Hotel De Coronado. The photo featured a full rainbow and a pink flushed sky while revealing the exact moment of the couple’s engagement.

McGeorge coincidentally took a photo of the couple using their cell phone camera as he was walking back to his gallery, but didn’t realize he captured the Kodak moment with his personal camera until the following day.

“Only the next day I zoomed in and there they were, right at the moment of the proposal,” McGeorge said.

Upon his discovery, McGeorge set up an online campaign to find the couple and gift them a framed canvas print of their proposal.

“I posted the photograph on my Facebook page and a close-up of the couple during the proposal under that rainbow with the message for people to help me find them,” McGeorge said.

On the eve of Valentine’s Day, the couple had been identified.

“I was so surprised. Rob and I are typically pretty private, so we didn’t share that picture or the moment with too many people,” Peart said. “It was a great way to celebrate Valentine’s Day,” she continued.

The couple had first been notified that McGeorge was searching for them after Treml’s brother spotted a post on the Internet, Peart recalls. Treml then contacted the local news station and contacted McGeorge.

“It’s really nice of the photographer to seek out and find us,” Peart said. “It was a beautiful moment, it’s so hard to describe to people because it was a full blown rainbow, and that beach area in general is a beautiful setting.”

The newly-engaged couple is currently in the process of planning their special day to officially tie the knot.

A pickup truck plowing snow in the parking lot of a Bucks County, Pennsylvania Wawa caught fire Tuesday morning.

The incident happened around 10 a.m. at the convenience store along Doylestown Road in New Britain Township, police and fire officials said.

The driver, who works for a landscaping company, tells NBC10's Deanna Durante he was clearing snow when passers-by began yelling the plow attached to the front of the pickup truck had caught fire.

He tried to put out the flames on his own, but couldn't. Fire eventually engulfed the entire truck, destroying it.

Fire crews from Montgomery Township and Chalfont rushed to the Wawa to put of the blaze.

While the truck was a total loss, no one was hurt.

NBC10 to Broadcast Blue Cross Broad Street Run

$

The Blue Cross Broad Street Run will be broadcast in its entirety for the first time in its 36 year history, race organizers announced Tuesday.

The uber popular 10-mile race has been a staple among the Philadelphia running community since the first trek down Broad Street took place more than three decades ago.

This year, NBC10 and Telemundo62 have taken over as the broadcast homes for the venerable run and will broadcast the annual event on television, online and on viewers' mobile devices.

"Philadelphia will finally get the chance to root for their friends from their couch," said Chris Cashman, Executive Vice President and President for Commercial Markets at Independence Blue Cross. The company has been the title sponsor for the past 19 years.

"This race encourages people from all walks of life to participate," Cashman said.

The Philadelphia Department of Parks and Recreation, which organizes and manages the race, launched the run in 1980 with 1,500 runners. It has grown every year since.

“The Blue Cross Broad Street Run is a Philadelphia tradition proudly managed by the men and women of the Philadelphia Parks and Recreation Department,” said Michael DiBerardinis, Deputy Mayor for Environmental and Community Resources and Commissioner of Parks & Recreation. “The race signifies the beginning of spring in Philadelphia and its route highlights many of our city's wonderful neighborhoods.”

Called the most popular 10 miler in the United States, 40,000 runners -- with varying skill levels -- will pound the slightly downhill course from Central High School in Olney to the finish line at The Navy Yard in South Philadelphia on May 3.

In the 2014 race, more than 32,000 people crossed the finish line to receive a metal and bragging rights that they conquered Broad Street. Seven years earlier, runner Patrick Cheruiyot recorded the best 10-mile time ever in the United States having completed the course in 45 minutes and 14 seconds.

The race benefits four local organizations: The American Cancer Society in the Philadelphia region, Students Run Philly Style, Back on My Feet, and The Fairmount Park Conservancy.

A lottery is held to determine who will get the chance to run. Lottery results were announced Tuesday and some 6,600 people will be left out of the 2015 race because of space constraints.

Two race hopefuls who weren't lucky enough to win the lottery could still have a chance to run with the NBC10 and Telemundo62 team. Make sure you have the NBC10 app to find out how to get a chance to earn a spot on the team in the coming weeks.

The race day telecast will be broadcast in English and Spanish. It will run two and a half hours starting at 8 a.m. and will include reports from the course, from SkyForce10 above Broad Street as well as pre-race coverage.

A special half-hour broadcast will be shown race eve on NBC10 at 7 p.m. This will highlight some of the run's most interesting features and profiles of runners. Both stations will showcase race participants and race information over the 10 weeks leading up to race day.

“The impact the Blue Cross Broad Street Run has on our community is immense. We are proud to join our partners, Independence Blue Cross to increase the visibility of the race by adding important elements like the live simulcast. We also have some exciting plans for our digital and social media platforms,” said Eric Lerner, President and General Manager, NBC10 and Telemundo62.

Both stations have also committed to hosting a special section on their digital platforms -- websites and apps -- that will showcase the broadcast content as well as exclusive and unique race-related stories, video and more.
