New Test Gets NJ Parents' Attention

The latest educational battleground in New Jersey is a standardized test that is to be administered for the first time next month.

Some teachers groups and parents are railing against the test developed by the Partnership for Assessment of Readiness for College and Careers. It is to be given to students in grades three through 11.

The test's critics say the stakes are too high and the test is unproven.

Supporters say it's better than previous tests because it tries to gauge critical thinking skills. They also say the test will give more useful information to parents and schools.

Lawmakers are considering a bill that would let parents have their students opt out of standardized testing.

Police have arrested one of two suspects accused of robbing a Temple University student as he left a home near the school's North Philadelphia campus.

The man, whose identity still hasn't been confirmed, was nabbed shortly after committing the crime around 2:30 a.m. Saturday, police said.

The 22-year-old student was leaving a home along the 1800 block of W. Berks Street when he was approached by the suspects. According to police, one man was armed with a silver semi-automatic pistol and both demanded the student hand over his iPhone 6.

He complied and the suspects ran away.

Officers on patrol in the area later spotted one man that matched the offender's description. Once stopped, police found the victim's iPhone, police said. He was then placed under arrest.

The second suspect remains at large. Police did not release a description of him.

A woman has pleaded guilty in a murder-for-hire plot that prosecutors said targeted witnesses against her husband in a shooting death at an eastern Pennsylvania social club.

Thirty-eight-year-old Sonia Panell entered the plea Friday in federal court in Philadelphia to soliciting the murder of three witnesses in the December 2012 gun battle outside a Puerto Rican social club in south Bethlehem that killed a woman and injured five other people.

Federal prosecutors said Panell tried to hire an Ohio man to commit the murders, but he went to federal authorities instead.

Northampton County jurors last fall convicted her husband, 34-year-old Rene Figueroa of Easton, of involuntary manslaughter and aggravated assault, rejecting the first-degree murder conviction sought by prosecutors. He was sentenced last month to 15½ to 31 years in prison.

Hundreds of Tax Returns Found in Street

Tax returns for hundreds of people were found in the middle of a Philadelphia street.

Yvette Santiago told NBC10 her husband spotted hundreds of papers in the street outside their home on the 1900 block of East Cheltenham Avenue Saturday morning.

“He thought it was garbage,” Santiago said. “But then he said, ‘Oh my God, look!’”

What he initially believed was trash was actually tax documents full of personal information.

“You have the name, social security and date of birth,” Santiago said.

Santiago showed the documents to NBC10’s Christine Maddela who took them to local accountant Michael Falco. Falco told NBC10 the documents were actual tax returns, showing where people work, their income and even information about their children.

“For the people who have documents here this could turn into a nightmare,” he said. “I’ve never seen anything like this before. This is unbelievable. Just terrible. Credit card theft you can stop. You’re only limited to a certain liability. This goes way beyond that because you can actually file a false tax return and get a refund. IRS paid out over $5 billion last year in false refunds from information that was stolen.”

Falco says the next step is figuring out how the documents ended up on the street.

“Who’s responsible for this getting out there because as a preparer, you’ve got a responsibility to make sure this information doesn’t get out,” he said.

Christine Maddela reached out to the Philadelphia Police Department who told her to notify the IRS once the office opens Monday. She is also tracking down the agency that prepared the tax returns.

Police searched for three masked men who broke into a northeast Philadelphia home early Sunday Morning, looking for luxury goods posted on the victims’ social media account.

The armed gunmen kicked open the front door and stormed the second floor of the Brookshire Terrace residence around 2:30 a.m., according to police.

The suspects made off with a Rolex watch, two gold chains and cell phones.

Police immediately arrived on scene after one of the victims managed to call authorities from the bathroom. They arrived while the suspects were still in the home.

After hearing glass break, neighbor Anthony Montico rushed outside with his own gun where he said he witnessed the suspects jumping from a second floor window.

All three suspects successfully escaped. No one inside the home was injured.

Two handguns believed to belong to the suspects were found in the upstairs floor, police say.

Police also found a bandana and footprints leading to nearby bushes and what they believed to be one of the fleeing suspect’s hats.

A man first believed to be involved in the home invasion and robbery was questioned by police on the scene, but released, authorities reported.

The investigation was ongoing.
