A central Pennsylvania man has been sentenced to 4 to 10 years in prison in the shooting death of a longtime friend that authorities said followed a fight over food.

Fifty-nine-year-old James Buterbaugh of Marion Center apologized to the victim's family during Friday's sentencing in Indiana County Court.

Buterbaugh pleaded guilty last fall to voluntary manslaughter in the death of 51-year-old David Ackerson after an argument over two plates of food that the defendant's mother had given Ackerson on the Memorial Day weekend. Authorities said both had been drinking when Buterbaugh accused Ackerson of, in his words, "mooching."

Defense attorney Robert Bell said the two had been best friends for years, and his client is remorseful. He called it "a tragic example that sometimes good people do bad things."

A man convicted in a Halloween shooting death in a central Pennsylvania nightclub has been sentenced to 30 to 60 years in prison.

The (Altoona) Mirror reports that 21-year-old Hugo Baez wept in Blair County Court Friday as he listened to the sobbing mother of the victim speak about her loss.

Baez was convicted of third-degree murder in the October 2013 slaying of 24-year-old Willie Solomon at Choices Nightclub in Altoona after an argument with the victim's brother.

He read aloud an apology and said he wished he could take back that night.

Judge Elizabeth Doyle said she imposed the sentence because of the ``violent nature and senselessness of the crime'' but told Baez that "It's still possible for some good to come out of your life."

Funeral for Baby Who Died at Day Care

A funeral will be held next Saturday for a baby boy who died at a Delaware day care.

A viewing for 10-month-old Charles Laws III will be held from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Feb. 7 at the Crossroad Community Church on 20684 State Forest Road in Georgetown, Delaware. The viewing will be followed by a funeral service at 1 p.m.

Charles was found unresponsive Wednesday by a worker at Handy’s Little Disciples day care on Layton-Davis Road in Millsboro, Delaware. The worker tried to wake the child up but was unable to do so.

"The baby had stopped breathing," Bolarius Handy, husband of the day care's owner, told NBC10 on Thursday.

Police were called to the day care and the child was taken to Beebe Healthcare in Lewes, Delaware where he was later pronounced dead.

Handy called the death a tragedy. "Nobody did nothing, ya know, just she went to wake the baby up and [he] wasn't responsive," he said.

Police said there were no signs of injuries or trauma to the child. The state medical examiner performed an autopsy to determine the cause of death. There's no timetable for when those results may be released.

The home day care has been licensed by the state since 1998, records show. That license will now be suspended pending the outcome of the investigation into the baby's death. Officials said that's standard procedure.

All donations and cards for the child’s family should be sent to the Watch God Move Christian Center at 21173 Coverdale Rd, Bridgeville, DE 19933. You can also contact Yolanda Soto by phone at 302-430-3348 or email her at msyysoto@gmail.com for more information.

Dog Eats Women's Boots, Undergoes Surgery

A dog is recovering after veterinarians removed a pair of women’s boots from his stomach.

The dog, a 4-year-old mixed breed named Vince, ate a pair of calf-high women’s Frye boots Friday afternoon, according to his owners, who live in Philadelphia.

Vince was taken to the Veterinary Specialty and Emergency Center (VSEC) in Philadelphia where he underwent surgery Saturday afternoon.

“These X-rays are absolutely remarkable, especially given that you can see and count the number of eyelets on the boots,” said Dr. Laura Tseng, a board-certified specialist in critical care and emergency medicine with VSEC. “The sheer volume of what he ate is impressive and caused a very serious emergency situation.”

Doctors at VSEC said the volume of the leather material was so large that Vince’s stomach was unable to pass the material into his small intestines. The material was removed manually during his surgery.

“If your pet is experiencing vomiting, lethargy or a lack of appetite, these are all signs a foreign body may be present and they should see a veterinarian as soon as possible,” said Tseng.

Vince’s surgery was successful, according to a VSEC spokesman. He is expected to be released from the center Sunday.

NFL Awards Football Hall of Fame

Junior Seau, Jerome Bettis, Tim Brown, Charles Haley and Will Shields were elected Saturday to the Pro Football Hall of Fame.

The class of 2015, announced a day before the Super Bowl, also includes a pair of contributors, Bill Polian and Ron Wolf, along with senior selection Mick Tingelhoff.

Five nominees were eliminated in the final vote: Tony Dungy, Kevin Greene, Marvin Harrison, Orlando Pace and Kurt Warner.

Earlier Saturday, the selection committee reduced the list of 15 modern-day finalists by cutting Morten Andersen, Terrell Davis, John Lynch and coaches Don Coryell and Jimmy Johnson.

A candidate needs 80 percent of the vote from 46 media members to get in.

The induction ceremony is in August at Canton, Ohio.

Seau, elected posthumously, was the only first-time eligible candidate to get in this year. He committed suicide at age 43 in 2012, and researchers who studied his brain said it showed signs of chronic traumatic encephalopathy, a disease connected to repeated head injuries, including concussions.

His death, less than 2 1/2 years after the end of his playing career, resonated among players in the league, raising worry about the physical and emotional toll the sport takes.

A field-covering, hard-hitting linebacker, the charismatic Seau played in the NFL for 20 seasons, the first 13 with the San Diego Chargers, followed by three with Miami and four with New England. He was Defensive Player of the Year for San Diego in 1992, made six All-Pro teams, and was a member of the league's All-Decade team of the 1990s.

Patriots coach Bill Belichick said this week he "loved" having Seau on his roster.

"I can't imagine having a Professional Football Hall of Fame without Junior Seau in it," said Belichick, whose team plays the Seattle Seahawks in Sunday's Super Bowl.

"I'd say the one word that comes to me when I think about Junior and football is 'passion.' He was a very passionate guy. A lot of energy. Lot of enthusiasm. First guy in the building in the morning — watching film, lifting weights, ready for practice," Belichick said. "Energy before the game, on the sideline, during the game. An emotional player, but a smart player."

A man was arrested after he allegedly shot and killed his roommate inside their southern New Jersey apartment.

William Clark III, 50, is charged with first-degree murder for the death of 51-year-old Steven Johnston of Audubon, New Jersey.

Clark called 911 around 2:55 a.m. Saturday and told the operator he killed Johnston by shooting him in the head at an apartment on the 400 block of South White Horse Pike in Audubon, according to investigators.

Officers arrived minutes later and took Clark into custody without incident. They later found Johnston's body in a third-floor apartment. He was dead from a gunshot wound to the head.

Clark allegedly told police Johnston was his roommate and they were having a conversation inside their apartment. Clark said he became upset and then shot Johnston, according to investigators.

Clark is being held at the Camden County Jail on $500,000 bail.
