Much of Area Dodges Major Snowfall

$
0

As snow continued to fall on some of the area Tuesday morning, Philadelphia and the immediate suburbs dodged major snow accumulation while parts of New Jersey still saw plenty of snow.

"The farther west you go, the less snow you will see," said NBC10 First Alert Weather meteorologist Bill Henley.

Snow moved in along the coastline overnight and spread inland. Strong, gusty winds struck parts of South Jersey — especially along the coast. Some coastal flooding as well as blowing and drifting snow in South Jersey made conditions tough.

Heavier snow came in from the north and led to accumulating snowfall in Ocean County and points northward. Ocean County is the part of the region expected to be hit the hardest.

"Snow totals inland are going to be much lower than originally expected," said Henley.

Weather models showed that snow totals in Philadelphia and the immediate suburbs won't be nearly as high as initially expected.

NBC10's Sheena Parveen explained the reasoning for the lowered totals.

The National Weather Service geared back a Winter Storm Warning — that initially covered most of the area as the early parts of the storm struck Monday — to a Winter Weather Advisory for only Bucks, Burlington, Camden, Montgomery, Northampton and Philadelphia counties. A Blizzard Warning for Ocean County, New Jersey was scaled down to a Winter Storm Warning early Tuesday.

Gary Szatkowski, meteorologist-in-charge with the NWS's office in Mount Holly, apologized on Twitter for missing the forecast.

TIMELINE

10 a.m. to Noon - Snow on and off

Noon to 2 p.m. - Snow tapers off

EXPECTED SNOW TOTALS

Ocean County -  5 to 10 inches

Philadelphia/I-95 Corridor - 1 to 3 inches

Northern and western suburbs - 1 to 2 inches

Lehigh Valley/Poconos - Coating to 1 inch

Delaware - about 1 inch

Atlantic County - 4 to 6 inches

All Philadelphia schools, agencies, offices and courts were closed Tuesday in anticipation of the storm. States of emergency were issued for Philadelphia and New Jersey. Gov. Chris Christie also implemented a travel ban for all of the Garden State that he later lifted Tuesday morning. Mayor Michael Nutter lifted Philly's emergency Tuesday morning meaning that residents could park along city streets as normal.

Hundreds of area schools announced closures in anticipation of possibly dangerous road conditions.

Despite lower snow totals, slick spots caused tough travel on area roads.

If you are flying in or out of Philadelphia International Airport, check your flight status before you go because many flights were canceled.

New Jersey Transit ceased operations during the storm but resumed trains and buses throughout Tuesday.

Parents Charged in Infant's Ferret Attack

The parents of a one-month-old Delaware County, Pennsylvania, girl have been charged with endangerment after the family's ferrets severely mauled the baby's face.

The baby's nose, upper lip and cheek were eaten away in the attack that took place in a Darby home last Thursday, police said.

Burnie Fraim, 42, and 24-year-old Jessica Benales were each charged with five counts of endangering the welfare of a child, court documents show. The couple has five children including the one-month-old girl.

According to police and the child's father, the girl was strapped into her car seat in the living room of the home along the 300 block of Poplar Road when as many as three ferrets mauled her. The animals had broken out of a mesh cage. The parents were upstairs at the time.

The girl underwent emergency surgery at the Children's Hospital of Philadelphia and had stents placed into her nose allowing her to breathe, police said. Fraim told NBC10 last week his daughter will need to undergo several more surgeries to repair the damage.

All three ferrets were euthanized.

Darby Police Chief Robert Smythe called the mauling the "most horrific thing" he's seen happen to a child in his 45 years in law enforcement.

The home was infested with insects and lacked food, according to the chief. Three social services agencies were monitoring the family when the mauling took place.

Smythe said the couple had developmental disabilities and he questioned their ability to care for the children.

Fraim and Bernales were arraigned in Delaware County Court on Monday.

A mushroom company’s payroll manager stole thousands of dollars by creating fictitious employee profile, said police in Chester County.

New Garden Township Police took Deseon Eggleston into custody during a routine traffic after issuing an arrest warrant stop last week.

The 33-year-old Downingtown resident did payroll for Modern Mushroom, Inc. located on Newark Road in Toughkenamon, Pennsylvania. Over a period of time from August to December, Eggleston deposited more than $18,000 from the company into his personal bank account after he set up a false employee account along with supporting documents, said investigators.

The company discovered the alleged theft during an internal audit, said police.

Eggleston posted $25,000 bail as he awaited a preliminary hearing next month.

Marshals Nab Driver in 983 Bags of Heroin Bust: Police

About six weeks after police charged a woman who they said carried 983 bags of heroin in her purse, U.S. Marshals nabbed the man investigators said drove the car where the woman was found.

Marshals caught up to Joshua Smallwood along Holloway Terrace in New Castle, Delaware Monday.

Investigators charged Smallwood, 27, with failure to stop, resisting arrest, heroin possession, firearms possession and traffic charges.

Officers had searched for the Delaware man following a Dec. 10 traffic stop along W 11th Street, said New Castle Police.

Investigators said police pulled over Smallwood’s car after an officer witnessed an apparent drug deal nearby. During a search of the car, police found 14 grams of heroin in Smallwood’s passenger’s purse.

Police arrested the woman but Smallwood made a dash for it, running toward a nearby Domino’s Pizza where he jumped into a running car and led police on a pursuit. Officers called off the pursuit because they said Smallwood’s reckless driving put the public in danger.

Smallwood was sent to county jail in lieu of $60,000 bond.

Jamison, a rescued pup from Downingtown, Pennsylvania, will be one of the adorable doggies featured in Animal Planet’s Puppy Bowl Sunday.

“I don’t care about the Super Bowl, but we’ll be watching the Puppy Bowl,” Head of New Life Animal Rescue Kim Mangione said. “We watch it every year, but this year we’ll be watching Jamison. We know he’ll do great.”

The pit bull-terrier mix was rescued by Animal Care and Control Team in Philadelphia when he was less than three weeks old. Soon after, he was transferred to New Life Animal Rescue suffering from worms, seizures, cigarette burns and a variety of maladies.

The Evesham-based shelter took the three-pound pooch to Mount Laurel Animal Hospital, where he was promptly treated.

When Animal Planet contacted the shelter about any playful puppy candidates, Mangione recommended Jamison and submitted pictures and video.

The Puppy Bowl is taped in October, but airs every year on Super Bowl Sunday.

If you’re unfamiliar, here’s all you need to know -- it’s a small field filled with puppies and toys. The event is live-tweeted by a bird and features kittens during half-time. It’s the kind of adorable that makes hearts explode with joy.

Tune in this Sunday at 3 p.m.

Councilman Jim Kenney to Resign; Is Mayoral Run Next?

Philadelphia City Councilman Jim Kenney released a statement Tuesday indicating he will formally resign Thursday, fueling speculation that he will be running for Philly's mayor in the upcoming November election.

Kenney will deliver his farewell address Thursday at his final City Council session, according to a news release.

The life-long South Philly resident had made headlines recently for sponsoring legislation that relaxed punishments for marijuana possession and introducing a bill that closes a loophole in hate crime laws.

The 56-year-old Democrat, who joined City Council in 1992, has yet to announce his intention to run for mayor. But city regulations require any mayoral candidate to resign from their Council seat.

So far, three candidates have officially announced they will run for mayor: former Philadelphia district attorney Lynne Abraham, State Senator Anthony Williams and former Philly judge Nelson Diaz.

Several others indicated interest in taking over Mayor Michael Nutter's office, like Philadelphia's City Controller Alan Butkovitz, Terry Gillen and Ken Trujillo, a former Philadelphia City Solicitor, but have since dropped out of the race.

City Councilman Darrell Clarke, who many speculated would run, announced early this month he would be seeking a fifth term representing the 5th district in council.
