Missing Boyfriend Found in Trunk of Own Car Was Strangled: Official

0
0

The death of a 24-year-old New Jersey man whose body was found in the trunk of his car after an apparent kidnapping has been ruled a homicide by way of strangulation.

The medical examiner's office says Jordan Johnson died from compression of the neck.

The NYPD released surveillance video of a man they say exited the 2013 BMW where Jordan Johnson's body was discovered on Thursday in the Bronx. The man can be seen on the video walking down the street, with the raised hood of his coat obscuring his face.

Johnson's girlfriend, Megan Faulkner, reported him missing earlier in the week when he didn't meet her in Harlem despite telling her to go to the neighborhood in a text.

Johnson's sister, Jacqueline Taylor, said something was off about the messages Faulkner got late that night from Johnson's phone.

She said Faulkner didn't feel like they were coming from her boyfriend, despite being sent from his cell, but Faulkner left the couple's Fort Lee apartment to meet him in Harlem anyway.

When Johnson didn't show or respond to her texts and calls, Faulkner told police he was missing. Then she returned to their apartment across the river and found it burglarized, authorities said. Cash and jewelry had been stolen.

Johnson’s body was found two days later in the trunk of his car on East 211th Street in Norwood.

Funeral for Newlywed Executed at SEPTA Stop

A Philadelphia woman gunned down by a masked man while she waited at a SEPTA bus stop was laid to rest Tuesday.

Funeral services were held Tuesday morning for Kim Jones — the newlywed mother of two shot and killed while she listened to gospel music one week earlier.

As friends and family remembered Jones as a loving mother and churchgoing woman taken too soon, police continued to look for her executioner.

"This was a very well planned execution," said Philadelphia Police Capt. James Clark.

Clark showed surveillance video last week in hopes of capturing Jones' killer, who remained calm while pulling the trigger.

"Investigation reveals that Ms. Jones was standing at the bus stop waiting to go to work when an unknown offender walked up behind her and killed her," said Clark.

Family members said Jones often walked about one block to the corner where she died to grab the Route 23 bus to Center City, where she had worked.

"She was a good person — she's college-educated, the mother of two sons and a hard worker," said nephew Steve Jones.

Medics pronounced the 56-year-old woman dead at the scene, about two blocks from Temple University's campus. Despite having jewelry, her cellphone and her purse on her, Jones wasn't robbed, said police.

Video captured the suspect, still covered head to toe in black, boarding SEPTA’s Broad Street Line Subway at the Cecil B Moore stop shortly after the shooting, said police. The suspect can be seen going five stops north, getting off at Hunting Park and walking out the Bristol Street exit.

"(The suspect) was dressed so that you could not make out if it was a male, a female or the ethnicity or anything about the individual," said Clark. " ... (The suspect) made a point of not looking up at the video cameras — almost knew where the cameras were going to be ... and made a point to never look up."

Clark described Jones' killer as a "heartless predator" standing about 5-feet, 10 inches to 6 feet, 1-inch tall with a stocky build. The suspect wore dark clothing, including an aviator hat with flaps on the side and fur lining, and white-colored Beats headphones.

"Our hope is that someone if they saw this individual Tuesday morning will contact us and tell us who he is," said Clark.

Police believed someone who knew Jones' routine targeted her. Anyone with information is asked to contact Philadelphia Police. A $20,000 reward is being offered for information leading to an arrest.

Friends Mourn Men Killed in I-476 Crash

Friends and family are mourning two men who were killed during a multi-vehicle accident on I-476 Sunday.

Thomas Brennan of Lansdale, Pennsylvania and Jason Anderson, 33, of Dover, Delaware were killed in a multi-vehicle accident on I-476 near Marple Road in Marple Township, police said.

A tractor trailer was traveling southbound on I-476 and lost control due to ice on the roads. The tractor trailer then jackknifed and became disabled in the left lane, blocking all lanes of travel.

Several vehicles were unable to avoid the tractor trailer in time. A man driving a Nissan Altima crashed into the trailer, suffering a head injury. Brennan and Anderson also drove under the trailer, becoming lodged underneath the vehicle.

Brennan and Anderson were both pronounced dead at the scene. Four other drivers also suffered non-life-threatening injuries in the crash.

"You just don't know what's going to happen in the next minute of your life," said Rich Hermann, Brennan's neighbor. "We're flabbergasted."

Hermann told NBC10 Brennan was heading to the airport for a business trip at the time of the crash.

"Tom was fairly outgoing," Hermann said. "When Tom walked into the room, you knew Tom was in the room."

Jason Anderson, who was the senior director of ticket sales and operations for Dover International Speedway, was driving back to his home in Dover with his wife and 1-year-old son at the time of the accident. Anderson's wife was injured in the crash. His son was not harmed however.

“Jason’s death is a tragic loss for all of us who considered him a close friend as well as a loss for Dover International Speedway,” said Dover International Speedway President Mike Tatoian. “He was an exemplary employee who always put customers and co-workers first. Our thoughts and prayers are with his friends and family during this very difficult time.”

A GoFundMe page was created to help Anderson's family. If you would like to donate, CLICK HERE.

In all, 11 vehicles were involved in the crash. Officials have not yet revealed the condition of the driver of the Nissan Altima. They continue to investigate the accident.

The fatal pileup is one of many accidents that happened across Delaware County Sunday as icy roads caused dangerous conditions for drivers. Authorities announced drivers should stay off the roads as the slippery conditions remain.

A robber was caught on camera holding a gun to a man’s head inside a Philadelphia grocery store, eventually leading to an employee inside the store pulling out his own weapon and opening fire.

On Jan. 13 at 7:11 p.m., two robbers walked inside Steven’s Grocery Store on the 2900 block of D Street. One suspect held a handgun to a customer’s head while another approached the 44-year-old store employee behind the counter.

The employee pulled out his own weapon, firing three times at the suspects, according to police.

During the shooting, the employee was struck at least once in his shoulder. Police have not yet revealed whether the employee shot himself accidentally or if one of the suspects shot him.
The suspects then fled the store on foot in separate directions.

The employee was taken to Temple University Hospital where he was placed in stable condition. Nothing was stolen from the store.

The first suspect is described as a man wearing a black coat, blue hooded sweatshirt and gray sweatpants armed with a handgun. The second suspect is described as a man wearing a gray hooded sweatshirt with a pocket on the left sleeve and blue jeans.

If you have any information on the robbery, please call the East Detective Division at 215-686-3243/3244.

Authorities in Delaware County, Pennsylvania say they've caught the man responsible for stealing the custom wheelchair of a 4-year-old boy with a developmental disorder.

The special, $2,200 wheelchair was stolen from the driveway of Nicholas Lovecchio's Brookhaven home on Monday afternoon. The boy suffers from epilepsy and the neurodevelopment disorder microcephaly and uses the chair to easily get around.

“If it shows up on our doorstep anonymously, that would be wonderful,” Vicki Lovecchio, the boy's mother, said last night. “We don’t want revenge or paybacks or punishment. We just want it back.”

Brookhaven Police Chief Randy McGoldrick tells NBC10 detectives tracked down the thief and arrested him on Tuesday.

Charges are pending so the man has not yet been identified, but McGoldrick said he did confess to the crime.

As for the chair, it's gone.

McGoldrick said the suspect told police he scrapped the chair for cash.

A number of people contacted NBC10 wishing to help the family get a new chair. Vicki Lovecchio has scheduled a doctor's appointment for her son.

This is a developing story. Check back for updates.

SEPTA 2015 Winter Storm Service Plan

0
0

SEPTA officials announced a new Winter Storm Service Plan in anticipation of future winter weather this year. The plan was created to better serve customers trying to leave Center City during the midday hours during a storm.

The plan identifies two possible weather-related situations, Severe Storm and Early Exit.

SEVERE STORM SCHEDULE

This schedule will go into effect in the event of high snow accumulations, high winds and icy conditions. The following modifications will go into effect:

  • Regional Rail trains will operate on a Saturday schedule
  • Wilmington/Newark Line service will be enhanced with service to Newark and Churchmans Crossing Stations, DETAILS HERE
  • Cynwyd Line service will not operate

SEPTA will notify customers by 4 p.m. the day before the storm if a Saturday schedule will be in effect. A Saturday schedule will not be reversed once it’s announced

EARLY EXIT SERVICE

This will go into effect when Philadelphia officials call for an early closure of the Central Business District. Under this scenario, SEPTA will shift resources and reschedule nine trains that normally operate during the peak evening rush. The nine trains will operate between the hours of 12 p.m. and 12:40 p.m. When the special operating schedule goes into effect and the nine designated trains don't operate at their regularly scheduled PM peak times, passengers who normally ride those trains will have to take other available trains home.

SEPTA will notify customers by 10 a.m. on the day of the storm if the Early Exit Schedule will be in effect.

Grandmother of Slain Burglary Suspect Speaks

The grandmother of a man who was shot and killed after he allegedly broke into a Lower Township, New Jersey home is speaking out, claiming she doesn't believe her grandson was trying to steal anything.

"Why would he break into the house?" asked Deborah Cianchetta. "He didn't look for money. I think he was hurt and was looking for help."

Cianchetta's grandson, 21-year-old James Weaver Jr., died after he was shot in the head during the alleged break-in.

The ordeal began Sunday around 2:25 a.m. when police were called to Route 109 in the Cold Springs section of Lower Township for a report of property damage to a vehicle.  When police arrived they spoke with Weaver's friend, who was driving the truck, as well as a passenger. The friend told police they were driving Weaver home when he broke the truck's two rear windows in a drunken rage.

"I picked up my friend from a bar and he grabbed the wheel and tried to get into an accident," the friend said in a 911 call obtained by NBC10. "He flipped out and punched out the windows of my truck."

The friend told police he then asked Weaver to leave. As he walked away, Weaver allegedly damaged the front windshield of the truck.

Cianchetta told NBC10 Weaver then called her on the phone in tears, asking her to pick him up. Before she could however, Weaver made his way to a home on the 700 block of Route 109 in Lower Township, according to investigators. Officers received a call from a husband and wife inside the home around 3:15 a.m.

"There's someone trying to get into our house," the wife said, in another 911 call obtained by NBC10. "Oh my God! Oh my God! Oh my God!"

As the wife stayed on the phone with police, her husband, who has limited mobility, grabbed a handgun and got into his wheelchair. Weaver allegedly smashed the glass door and tried to force his way inside.

"They're breaking in the door!" the wife screamed in the 911 call. "They're screaming at him! He has a gun! My husband...and he's told them that he has it but they're trying to get in! Oh my God! I don't know how many people there are but there's at least one man down there and he's yelling at my husband!"

The homeowner told Weaver not to come inside and warned him that he was armed with a gun, according to investigators.

As Weaver continued to move into the house, the homeowner opened fire, striking Weaver once in the head, police said. Weaver was taken to a hospital where he was pronounced dead a short time later. The homeowner has not been charged but the investigation is ongoing.

"It appears the homeowner warned the decedent about coming in," said Cape May County Prosecutor Robert Taylor. "I'm not talking about any charges at this time. The investigation is not complete."

Cianchetta told NBC10 she believes Weaver was actually looking for help and that he didn't deserve to die.

"Do you have to shoot somebody in the head?" she asked. "Can you shoot him in the knee?"

Prosecutors told NBC10's Ted Greenberg there won't be any conclusions made until investigators receive the results of the toxicology tests, which should shed more light regarding whether Weaver was under the influence of alcohol or drugs at the time.

In the state of New Jersey, the use of force is justifiable when a person believes immediate force is necessary for protection. A person cannot use force if he is resisting arrest or involved in any sort of crime.

Fire Engulfs NJ Apartment Complex

UPDATE: Luxury Apartment Complex Inferno Determined to Be Accidental

A massive fire that swept through a luxury New Jersey apartment complex Wednesday afternoon continued to burn 12 hours after it began, causing nearby schools and roads to close Thursday.

Firefighters struggled for hours to quench the flames at Avalon on the Hudson on Russell Avenue in Edgewater, 15 years after an earlier blaze burned the same complex to the ground as it was being built.

"We left in what we had," displaced resident Tamara Talbott said. "We got the kids and the dogs. Our cars are all underneath. There's nothing left.”

The New York Post reports Yankees announcer John Sterling was among those displaced by the fire.

The fire was mostly contained by Wednesday night, with no loss of life or major injuries reported, according to Edgewater Mayor Michael McPartland.

McPartland declared a local state of emergency Wednesday night, announcing schools will be closed Thursday and roads will be restricted.

The fire broke out around 4:30 p.m., and the 408-unit building was quickly evacuated. After firefighters first responded, the fire appeared under control for some time, but it escalated in the back part of the complex, which responders had a hard time accessing.

The blaze then spread to the northern section of the building, engulfing multiple units. Flames and smoke could be seen from the top of Rockefeller Center, across the Hudson River. Thick plumes of smoke from the fire sent Chopper 4 over the scene to double its normal altitude -- from about 1,500 feet to 3,000 feet.

The fire drew massive emergency response, with departments from Hudson, Bergen and Union counties working the fire. The FDNY and Jersey City's fire department also responded with fireboats, helping to draw water from the Hudson River, officials said.

Tankers and engines attempted to fight the blaze from the exterior, and collapse zones were set up around the complex as the blaze tore down roofs.

The hillside communities surrounding Edgewater were also being watched, as embers from the blaze were whipped into the air.

Around 160 people are being sheltered at a local community center with the help of the Office of Emergency Management and Red Cross, according to the mayor.

Residents walked around River Road in shock as they wondered how a fire could spread so quickly.

"For all the fire doors and things we have in the building, I'm shocked that it would go from something small to something like this," resident Talbott said.

One responding fire chief told NBC 4 New York he thought lightweight wood construction was a factor in how quickly the fire spread.

"It collapses very easily, and the fire spreads very easily throughout," he said.

The large Avalon on the Hudson apartment complex, located by the Hudson River across from Manhattan, is across the street from the Edgewater post office, and is located across a shopping complex that contains a Trader Joe's supermarket.

The same apartment complex burned to the ground while under constructed in 2000. It was rebuilt featuring one-, two- and three-bedroom units designed to appeal to New York City commuters.

McPartland said the building had sprinklers inside.

Power and gas were shut off to the area as firefighters responded; some streets and buildings were still without power Wednesday night, and officials were expected to assess safety before allowing utilities to restore electricity.
