Light Wintry Mix in Parts of Del., Jersey

More winter weather is heading for parts of our area Wednesday though not as much as we saw Monday.

A storm tracking well off-shore should bring a wintry mix to the southern half of Delaware as well as extreme South Jersey between 6 a.m. and 8 a.m. Wednesday. Snow and sleet are expected for that area. Only an inch of snow at the most is expected to accumulate however. Despite this, drivers in those areas should still be careful heading to work Wednesday morning due to the potential for icy spots.

As far as the Philadelphia area and the north and west suburbs, there is the possibility of some light snowflakes to fall in the area around 10 a.m. but little to no accumulation is expected.

Temperatures will rise to the mid-30s Wednesday. Thursday and Friday will be clear with a high of 38 while temperatures will rise into the 40’s over the weekend.

Guidance Counselor Fired for Threat

A suburban Philadelphia guidance counselor accused of writing social media posts threatening "die-in" protesters outside an Eagles game last year has lost her job.

Officials voted to fire Central Bucks West High School's MaryKate Blankenburg during a school board meeting Tuesday night.

Blankenburg, a guidance counselor at the school, had been placed on leave after she was accused of posting on social media about "die-in" protesters demonstrating outside the Eagles Dec. 7 Sunday Night Football game against the Seahawks.

"If my child cannot get to the Eagles game due to protesters, I will personally SHOOT every one of them. You've been warned idiots!!" is how the message allegedly posted by Blankenburg read.

The Central Bucks School District placed the Upper Gwynedd Township woman on leave with pay while prosecutors could investigate, district officials said. Officials ultimately voted to fire her during the Central Bucks School board meeting Tuesday night.

Although she was fired for the Facebook post, Blankenburg will not face any criminal charges.

"After investigation, the District Attorney has concluded that, while the posting was inappropriate and ill-advised, it was not made with the level of intent necessary to make the posting criminal in nature," read a message posted on Montgomery County District Attorney Risa Vetri Ferman's website.

The DA said that an "apologetic and remorseful" Blankenburg admitted to creating the controversial post that was shared across other social media platforms and acknowledged that it was inappropriate.

Investigators found that Blankenburg had no access to a gun and had no intentions of harming anyone.

"The posting created and published by MaryKate Blankenburg does not rise to the level of a crime. The totality of the circumstances reveals that the comment made by Blankenburg was shortsighted and inappropriate, but not made with the requisite criminal intent to terrorize, alarm, harass, annoy, or otherwise cause a serious public inconvenience."

The post was focused on the 200 or so demonstrators that sought to disrupt traffic coming from the Eagles game as they protested against racism in the wake of the police-involved deaths of unarmed black men Michael Brown and Eric Garner.

South Street Cheesesteak Legend Dies

Alzheimer’s disease claimed the life of the longtime owner of some of Philadelphia’s legendary cheesesteak shops.

Abner Silver, owner of Jim’s Steaks, died peacefully after a battle with Alzheimer’s, the iconic steak shop tweeted Tuesday.

Silver was 79.

The Overbrook High School and Temple University Law School graduate shared ownership of the steak shop along with William Proetto since the late 70s, reported Philly.com. The duo decided to expand from the 62nd and Noble streets shop, which opened in 1939, and decided to build a second location at the corner of 4th and South streets where it became a legendary icon famous with Philadelphians, celebrities and tourists.

Silver took over sole ownership of the steak shop after Proetto died in 2011 but shortly after, Proetto’s family took control of the shops — including locations in Delaware County and at the Roosevelt Mall — outside of the West Philly location as Silver’s condition deteriorated, reported Philly.com.

Besides Jim’s on South, Silver also owned the aptly named Abner’s at 38th and chestnut streets in University city — a popular eatery for college students.

Silver leaves behind his wife of 51 years, Joan; two children and four grandchildren. Relatives and friends are invited to his memorial service at 11 a.m. Friday at Main Line Reform Temple on Montgomery Avenue in Wynnewood, Pennsylvania.

Workers will disinfect a local elementary school Wednesday after dozens of students became sickened with flu-like symptoms.

Officials say 75 students in all at Nazareth Academy Grade School in Northeast Philly were absent Tuesday, up from 55 students who were absent Monday. A total of 200 students attend the school.

Officials said the sick students are suffering from flu-like symptoms. Sister Mary Ellen, the president of Nazareth Academy, sent a letter to parents alerting them of the situation. Workers will disinfect the entire school Wednesday and classes have been canceled for that day.

“We ask that all students, staff and teachers take one day at home while all rooms are aired out and all areas, disinfected,” Sister Ellen said in her letter to parents. “It will be up to the discretion of each student whether she wishes to assign (or not to assign) work for tomorrow.”

Sister Ellen told NBC10 any surface in the school where hands come into contact will be disinfected.

"They're cleaned everyday but tomorrow we're giving them another going over just to make sure," she said.

Sister Ellen also urged parents of sick children to keep their kids home.

Heather Tereshko told NBC10 her two daughters who are in fourth and seventh grade, are among the sick students.

"Coughing, sore throat, fever," Tereshko said. "Fever was the consistent thing with both of them."

So far there are no confirmed cases of the flu and only one confirmed case of strep throat. Classes at the school will resume Thursday.

Delco Fire Victim May Have Been Smoking: Nephew

The family of an elderly woman who was found dead near the front door of her burning home in Delaware County overnight Tuesday believes a cigarette may have been to blame for her death.

"I would assume that she fell asleep while having a cigarette and didn't wake up," the 76-year-old victim's nephew, Keith Jackson, said

The victim was discovered on the front porch -- close to the door -- by firefighters working to extinguish the blaze in a duplex on the corner of Elberon Ave. and Providence Rd. in Yeadon.

Jackson's mom, dad and twin sister were also inside the home at the time of the blaze.

"They were able to escape out the back door," he said.

No one else was injured.

An investigation into the fatal fire is underway.

"We look for a lot of things -- where the fire originated, if there was any mechanical issues or a material started it," said Delaware County Assistant Fire Marshal Rufus Stokes. "There's a lot we look at."

This was the first fatal fire in the county so far this year.

Attorney Accused of Paying for Teen Sex in Court

$

A Center City attorney accused of paying for and having sex with a 14-year-old girl, repeatedly, in his office is scheduled to be in a Philadelphia court room Wednesday.

Brian Meehan will be in court for his preliminary hearing on charges of involuntary deviate sexual intercourse, unlawful contact with a minor, indecent assault, promoting prostitution of a minor and related offenses.

He was arrested in Nov. 2014 following an investigation by a Philadelphia grand jury that revealed the sex trafficking story of a Germantown teen. She was lured by a couple in her own neighborhood and sold for sex to more than 20 men a week, including Meehan, according to District Attorney Seth Williams..

"I believe there's a special place in hell for men like Brian Meehan," said Williams.

In March of 2012, the victim was recruited by the couple, a man and woman who admitted to investigators they were running a prostitution ring out of their home on W. Harvey Street with five girls. During the first week, the teen was given some money by the couple but the relationship quickly turned violent and threatening. According to the teen's grand jury testimony, the couple sexually assaulted, beat and threatened to kill her if she tried to leave.

The victim testified she was taken on "out-calls" to Meehan's office in One Penn Center at 16th and JFK Boulevard on numerous occasions. She said they had sex in a conference room with a couch and that Meehan often offered her alcohol, which he drank but she didn't.

According to the grand jury documents, during her visits, "Meehan often talked about his wife and three daughters and the trips they'd taken, even suggesting that she might accompany him for travel."

When investigators searched Meehan's office in October, they cut out portions of the couch and a chair where investigators said they used ultraviolent light to detect bodily fluids. He was fired from Bishop, Dorfman, Lazaroff & Meehan last month. The firm issued a statement Tuesday saying they were shocked, appalled and moved swiftly in terminating Meehan. "Our thoughts are with the victim. We will continue to do everything we can to cooperate with the investigation."

Court documents show hundreds of pornographic websites were found in the history on Meehan's cellphone. Close to three dozen included pornographic videos with "teen" in the title.

According to the victim, Meehan, 56, told her "he liked young girls and the youngest girl he had sex with for money was 12-years-old."

"Nothing is as devastating to a family or as destructive to a life in development of a child as being a victim of sex abuse," Williams said.

Detectives began investigating the victim's case in 2012 after the Germantown couple sold her to a Camden couple for $300. When she arrived at a Camden hospital complaining of severe vaginal pain and discomfort, she told a nurse she was being forced into prostitution. Before police arrived to question her, she left the hospital. When they tried to track her down, they realized hospital staff had been given a fake name.

After that, the 14-year-old was sent back to the Germantown couple, recruited by another pimp and taken to Georgia. She was there for approximately a year before Federal authorities identified her as a victim of sex trafficking and eventually contacted police in Philadelphia.

The Germantown couple has also been arrested and charged  with human trafficking, involuntary deviate sexual intercourse, statutory sexual assault, unlawful contact with a minor, corrupting the morals of a minor, indecent assault and promoting prostitution of a minor. Their names are not being released until the grand jury completes its investigation.
