A pregnant woman was among three people hospitalized after a head-on crash in central New Jersey.

Freehold police tell the Asbury Park Press that the crash occurred around 7:50 p.m. Wednesday on Jackson Mills Road in the Monmouth County community.

They say a southbound car driven by 22-year-old Shabbir Abbas, of Woodbridge, crossed the center line and struck a northbound vehicle driven by 29-year-old Wook Kim, of West Windsor.

Abbas, Kim and his pregnant passenger, 30-year-old Nancy Karroum of Jackson, were all taken to hospitals for treatment of undisclosed injuries that were not considered life-threatening.

Abbas was cited for careless driving.

Widow of Man Shot by Police Looks for Answers

The widow of a South Jersey man shot and killed during a traffic stop wants to know what led to her husband's death.

"We just want answers why this happened," Lawanda Reid said in a news release from the law firm of Conrad J. Benedetto. "No one deserves to die like that."

Reid hired the law firm in hopes of finding out exactly what transpired around 9:20 p.m. Tuesday when police officers in Bridgeton, New Jersey opened fire on her husband Jarame Reid after they pulled over a Jaguar at South Avenue and Henry Street around 9:20 p.m. Tuesday.

The 36-year-old died after being rushed to the hospital.

Cumberland County Prosecutor Jennifer Webb-McRae said Bridgeton police officers Braheme Days and Roger Worley both shot one of two people who were in stopped Jaguar.

Webb-McRae said a handgun "was revealed and later recovered." Her office did not return a call or email seeking more details on what led to the shooting.

Reid's attorney identified the car's driver as Leroy Tutt.

Investigators have revealed few details about what led to the shooting or the initial traffic stop. New Jersey State Police and county prosecutors investigated the deadly incident.

Witnesses said the scene was chaotic after the shooting and Jarame Reid was shot after he was ordered to get out of the car.

Denzel Mosley, 17, said he watched the scene unfold from the attic of his house, which is on the corner of the street in front of where the shooting happened. He said both of Reid's hands were in "plain sight" and he didn't see a gun.

"They were telling him, 'Get out the car,'" he said. "They (police) was like 'Stop!' and they started shooting."

A bullet hole was visible in the windshield of the vehicle.

Tahli Dawkins, who was taking out his recycling at the time of the shooting, told NBC10 he witnessed the incident.

"He had nothing in his hands," Dawkins said. "He had his hands up trying to get out of the car, one on the door was getting out like this and he just started shooting him."

Reid called for an independent investigation and said he planned her own autopsy of her husband's body.

Jarame Reid had a three-month-old son, according to his cousin Keesha Springs.

"He was a good kid," Springs said. "He had a troubled past but after that he became a good person. I love my cousin. Everybody has their bad times and he had his bad times. But he was very lovable."

Funeral services were planned for Saturday morning at Chestnut Assembly of God on E Chestnut Avenue in Vineland, New Jersey.

Salon Sanitized, Fitness Centers Warn About Hep. A

A Mercer County, New Jersey hair salon has been sanitized and two health clubs are warning their patrons they could have been exposed to Hepatitis A after women contracted the virus at a restaurant.

The Hair Port Salon in Hamilton Township underwent a thorough cleaning on Friday after a 53-year-old stylist tested positive for the virus, township health officials said.

The woman and a 60-year-old fitness instructor came down with the virus after eating at Rosa's Restaurant and Catering more than a month ago, officials said. An infected food prep worker is the source of the outbreak and was hospitalized last month because of it.

The Hamilton Area YMCA 's JKR branch sent out notices to its nearly 14,000 members via email and social media notifying them about the possible exposure.

"I can't tell you how many people were exposed because any contact is contact," Jim Fell, the YMCA's CEO told NBC10.

The fitness instructor worked part-time at the YMCA teaching a 5:45 a.m. group exercise class three days a week, Fell said. She also worked at the New Jersey Athletic Club in Lawrenceville and they too informed members.

While they're warning unvaccinated people to take note, health officials say they're more concerned with exposure at the hair salon because it's a much smaller business.

"I fell very, very strongly that the Y is a minimal contact location," township health officer Jeff Plunkett said Friday.

Plunkett said the exposure period runs from Dec. 4 through the end of the month. He suggests anyone that has not been vaccinated against Hepatitis A who visited these locations to get a shot right away.

"If you do get the vaccination and you are incubating and have the infection, it will reduce your symptoms," he said. "If you are not incubating it will offer lifelong immunity."

Hepatitis A symptoms include mild fever, loss of appetite, nausea, fatigue, vomiting, diarrhea, abdominal pain and dark urine and jaundice. It is primarily transmitted when a person ingests food or water that has been contaminated by the infected person's feces.

Along with the new year, comes new prices. Pennsylvania Turnpike drivers should expect to see an increase in toll fares this week.

The toll rates are set to increase by 5 percent for both cash and E-ZPass customers at 12:01 a.m. Sunday.

"It is important our customers understand that we continue to work hard to hold down costs as we ask motorists to pay more at the tollbooth," said Pa. Turnpike Commission CEO Mark Compton. "We will continue to improve business practices and work to keep toll increases to a minimum."

Although the change affects cash and E-ZPass rates equally, E-ZPass customers will continue to save as much as 35 percent on the turnpike's tolls in 2015.

The increase is needed to fulfill the Pa. Turnpike Commission's obligation to the state to address a transportation-funding shortfall, according to a news release.

The Commission makes an annual contribution of $450 million to Penn DOT for projects on off-Turnpike infrastructure, like bridges.

Pa. Turnpike customers can view both old and new rates online at http://www.paturnpike.com/toll.

A man and woman jumped from their homes to escape the intense flames of a blaze that tore down a Southwest Philadelphia street Friday night.

The fire that started around 9 p.m. spread to three houses along the 2200 block of S. 68th Street, fire officials tell NBC10.

Fire shot into the night sky from the front and back windows of one rowhome as firefighters worked to break ventilation holes in the roof and knock back the flames.

A 70-year-old man and 32-year-old woman leapt from a second floor window to escape the fire, officials said.

Both were taken to the the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania.  He broke his femur and she had leg pain, fire officials said.

A third person was also hospitalized after suffering unknown injuries in the fire.

Police and firefighters first to arrive on the scene rescued residents from at least one home, officials said.

All three homes were gutted by the blaze and 20 people, including families with children, have been displaced. Fifteen homes were left without power.

The American Red Cross is responding to the scene to help the residents.

$10M Lawsuit Filed in US Airways Crash at Philly Int'l

A New York man has filed a $10 million lawsuit against US Airways after he says he was injured following a crash landing at Philadelphia International Airport last year.

Frank Gabbamonte, of Hawthorne, N.Y., suffered permanent damage to his shoulder after jumping down the emergency slide of US Airways flight 1702 after it crash landed following an aborted takeoff last March, according to the federal lawsuit.

"In the process of going down the chute himself, he struck his left shoulder on the ground and caused a rather severe injury," Jonathan Reiter, the man's attorney, told NBC10.

Gabbamonte damaged his rotator cuff and tore cartridge and ligaments in his shoulder and biceps, the lawsuit said. He had to undergo surgery months after the crash and has not been able to return to his job hauling heavy auto parts, the attorney added.

He was one of 149 passengers and five crew members evacuated from the Airbus A320 on March 13, 2014. Officials initially said a blown tire and wind shear contributed to the crash, but an internal Federal Aviation Administration report obtained by the NBC10 Investigators points to pilot error.

The report concluded the pilots failed to input departure speeds into the jet's onboard computer and ignored audible and written warnings during takeoff. The airliner was 70 feet off the ground when the captain aborted the flight. The plane's tail smashed into the runway forcing the nose down and causing the landing gear to collapse, the report said. The jet skidded 2,000 feet across a field before coming to a rest.

Officials also said the captain shouldn't have been flying. He had narcotics in his system from a medical procedure he underwent two days prior, the report said.

A spokeswoman for US Airways said the airline could not comment citing the pending case. The National Transportation Safety Board is expected release a final report this spring.

Surveillance Released in Hit & Run That Killed Woman

Philadelphia Police are hoping new surveillance video of a hit and run that took the life of a 33-year-old woman days before Christmas will lead them to her killer.

The video released Friday night shows a dark colored, older model Ford pickup or tow truck driving away from the crash along the 8100 block of State Road in Northeast Philadelphia on Dec. 23, 2014.

The truck suffered damage to its left front end after hitting Theresa Pozzi as she crossed the road, police said. Witnesses said she was thrown as far as 100 feet after being hit. She later died at the hospital.

"It hurts me to the point that not only did they kill my daughter, but they killed me," Pozzi's mother, Anna, told NBC10 as she sobbed. "They took a part of me that I can never get back again."

Police did recover a headlight lens that allowed them to narrow down the make and and age of the truck. But they are still asking for the public's help in finding the driver.

"How could you be so cold and so heartless that you can do that and drive away," the mother asked angrily. "Obviously you didn't have a guilty conscious because you didn't come forward."

Anyone with information is asked to call the Philadelphia Police tipline at 215.686.TIPS.

Deadly Threats Prompt Standoff in Levittown

Police took a man into custody early Saturday morning, hours after the gun owner allegedly threatened to kill one of his Bucks County neighbors and family members.

Authorities, including a SWAT team, surrounded a home along Ice Pond Road in Levittown -- part of Bristol Township -- around 9:30 p.m. after a woman called police and said her uncle, 58-year-old Lawrence Rouse, was making deadly threats, officials said.

Rouse, who was taken into custody without incident around 5:30 a.m. Saturday, said he would kill a neighbor and his relatives once his 90-year-old mother passed away, according to Bristol Township's Acting Chief of Police Sgt. Ralph Johnson.

The elderly woman is on hospice in the Ice Pond Road home where the standoff took place.

Police initially responded to the house shortly after 7:30 p.m., but there was no answer at the door, Johnson said.

Officials told Ice Pond Road residents, as well as others who live in the Indian Creek section of Levittown, to remain inside their homes while they investigated.

Eventually authorities made contact with Rouse, speaking with him for about three hours before taking him into custody, Johnson said.

Officials said they transported Rouse, who may be suffering from a mental health issue, to Lower Bucks Hospital. His mother was taken to Aria Torresdale Hospital.

Detectives searched Rouse's home and seized around 30 loaded weapons from several gun safes found throughout the residence, according to investigators.

Rouse was arraigned 4 p.m. Saturday and charged with felony terroristic threats, recklessly endangering another person, resisting arrest, disorderly conduct and harassment. His bail was set at 10% of 500,000 and he was transported to the Bucks County Correctional Facility.
