Mummers Parade in Center City

0

Philadelphia will begin the new year with the annual Mummers Parade in Center City.

The parade, which was shortened significantly due to cost, will start at 10 a.m. New Year's Day at City Hall with judging taking place at 15th Street and JFK Boulevard.

The parade will then go south on Broad Street from noon to 5 p.m. and end on Broad Street and Washington Avenue.

The overall participation in the parade has decreased from 12,000 to 8,000 mummers since 2001. For the first time in more than a century, the parade’s oldest troupe will not be strutting down the street.

Funding deficiencies forced the group to reconsider their regular route. The new route does not cross into South Philadelphia, where the mummers historically live and perform. Instead, the event will take over a one mile stretch of Broad Street south of City Hall.

During the parade, a family viewing area will be held at the Creative and Performing Arts School on 901 South Broad Street.

You can find more information on the Mummers Parade including the list of participants on the official Mummers website.

The year ended with a close call for a mother and her two children after they were rescued by police officers during a house fire in Camden.

The blaze broke out shortly after 4 p.m. Wednesday at a home on 8th and Atlantic streets. Two Camden Metro police officers who were the first to arrive ran into the burning house where they found a mother and her two children on the second floor. The officers then managed to get the family through a window and onto the roof of the home.

“The kids exited the window along with the mother and a couple of the assistant officers were able to help them down off the roof and bring them over to EMS,” said Camden County Police Officer Sean McMahon.

Medics checked the family as well as one of the officers for smoke inhalation but no one was seriously hurt.

Officials continue to investigate the cause of the fire.

Circumstances surrounding the Anderson's death are unclear.

Rally to Protest Mummers Parade Changes

0

Nearly two dozen people gathered at Broad and Oregon streets -- an intersection that was part of the Mummers Parade until this year -- to protest the route changes that cut out 1.5 miles of strut-seeing for South Philly residents.

The peaceful demonstration, which began at 11 a.m.,  aimed to "send a message to those in charge that the parade which started in South Philadelphia ...should stay in South Philadelphia," according to a Facebook post that has been shared more than 270 times.

Mummers began their march from Philadelphia's City Hall around 10 a.m. on Jan. 1, heading south along Broad Street before traveling east on Washington Avenue.

In years past, the parasol-toting Mummers strutted north on Broad Street from Oregon Avenue, ending the celebration at City Hall.

The new route, which was part of the annual celebration for the first time on New Year's Day 2015, removed a 1.5 mile South Philly stretch -- Broad Street between Washington and Oregon avenues -- from the brigades' and string bands' colorful path.

"We plan to peacefully protest the changes that were made to the parade that benefit the Center City section of the city only, without regard to tradition and the effect on the South Philadelphia citizens and business owners," the Facebook post reads.

NJ Church Usher Admits Stealing $67,000

A man has admitted stealing more than $67,000 from a northwestern New Jersey church where he served as an usher.

Sussex County prosecutors say 50-year-old Cody MacMillian, of Wantage, faces a possible prison term when he's sentenced March 27. He recently pleaded guilty to a theft charge.

Prosecutors say MacMillian took checks that were put into the collection basket by congregants of the Lafayette Federated Church in Lafayette Township and deposited them into his personal bank account.

Church leaders did not realize something was amiss until they reviewed financial records and found a "substantial amount of money" was missing.

Authorities were contacted and connected MacMillian with the theft.

YOUR PHOTOS: Mummers Strut New Route

The Mummers strutted down Broad Street this year in a new route for the 114-year-old folk parade, breaking tradition by skipping South Philadelphia all together.

The elaborately-costumed performers marched on a shortened route from City Hall down to Washington Avenue, where South Philly begins. The new course was put in place amid declining participation from members and increased costs.

Parade participation has declined from 12,000 performers in 2001 to about 8,000 this year, according to organizers. Some brigades were forced to step aside because of a lack of funds.

Some two dozen residents protested the route change by demonstrating at Broad and Oregon streets, one of the intersections that was removed from the parade route.

Still, the Philadelphia tradition dazzled spectators for another year with lots of people lining up to cheer on the Mummers donning 'dem golden slippers.

Murray took home first place in the Comic Division. Riverfront was top of the Wenches.

In the Fancy Division, which now only consists of one club, Golden Sunrise won by default.

Fralinger played their way into first place among the String Bands in that division. Quaker City and Woodland came in second and third respectively.

And among the Fancy Brigades, the South Philly Vikings bested the Bill McIntyre's Shooting Stars for first place.

Firefighters Get Pup Lost at the Mummers Parade Home

It wasn't the happiest start to the new year for one small pup.

Snowball, a white Terrier, was found wandering alone at Thursday's Mummers Parade along Broad Street.

A spectator brought him to the Philadelphia Fire Department's Ladder 5 and the department put out a message to its Twitter followers asking for help in getting him home.

Well, it only took a few hours to get the little guy back to his owners. By 8 p.m., Snowball's parents had contacted the department and by 9 p.m. he was back in their arms.

Snowball left quite the impression on the men and women that took care of him. They named him an honorary firefighter.
