A New Jersey mother was arrested after she allegedly drove while drunk with her young daughter inside her car. Police told NBC10 the girl could have been hurt if not for the efforts of a local firefighter.

Rachel Lamanno, 26, of Red Bank, New Jersey was spotted by several witnesses driving erratically through several towns the afternoon of Christmas Day, according to investigators. Lamanno’s 3-year-old daughter was inside the car at the time, police said.

“Running cars off the road and almost causing accidents,” said Barnegat Township Police Lieutenant Keith Germain.

Lamanno eventually ended up on Route 72 East in Barnegat Township where she was spotted by Richard Warren Jr., of Howell, New Jersey.

“A bystander had basically flagged her down and gotten her to stop her vehicle,” Germain said.

Warren, a West Long Branch firefighter, told NBC10 he approached Lamanno’s car on the side of the road then intervened when she tried to drive off.

“The window was down,” Warren said. “I reached my hand in, put it into park and released the keys and grabbed and held the keys. She asked me why I was doing that.

Warren kept Lamanno there until officers arrived at the scene.

“We always caution people about the dangers of getting involved in a case like that but certainly when you have someone who’s repeatedly coming so close to causing accidents, it’s certainly a courageous thing to do,” Germain said.

Lamanno was arrested and charged with several offenses, including endangering the welfare of a child.

“I don’t think there’s anything that can be more concerning than risking the life of a child,” Germain said.

Lamanno remains in jail on $20,000 bail. Her daughter was placed into the care of a family member. State child welfare authorities were also notified.

Philadelphia Parking Authority officials are warning the public of phony emails asking for payment for unpaid tickets.

PPA Executive Director Vince Fenety issued a consumer fraud alert Monday.

“No one receiving these emails should make any payment whatsoever,” Fenety said. “These emails are a fraudulent attempt to scam the public. The PPA never asks for payment through emails. The only valid request for payment for outstanding parking tickets is conducted through the U.S. mail.”

The only online payment sites for Philadelphia parking tickets are Phila.gov and Philapark.org. If you’ve received an email payment notice, disregard it. If you have any questions regarding the authenticity of any notices, call the PPA Customer Service Department at 1-888-591-3636.

Armed Robbers Target Victims Near SEPTA Station

Police are on the hunt for armed robbers who are targeting local residents walking to and from the Frankford SEPTA Transportation center near Pratt and Penn streets in the Frankford section of the city.

The suspects have robbed nine victims since Dec. 22 with the most recent attack occurring around 6:30 a.m. Monday morning near the station.

“I didn’t take him serious until I saw the gun,” said the ninth victim, Jennifer Lewis.  “I didn’t take him serious at all until he hit me.”

Another victim, Regina Washington, told NBC10 she was on her way to church around 6:10 a.m. Sunday when one of the suspects attacked her.

“Somebody came up behind me and pulled my hair and hit me in the back of the head with a gun,” Washington said. “He had a white hoodie on and he had a gun. When I saw the gun I automatically dropped everything. He said, ‘Give it up,’ and I dropped everything and I ran.”

Investigators told NBC10 the gunmen strike their targets when they’re isolated.

“There was no SEPTA or anything there,” Lewis said. “There was nothing! I screamed and there was nobody there.”

Detectives are worried that the gunmen are getting bolder as the attacks continue.

“We don’t want it to escalate and that’s the problem,” said Philadelphia Police Lieutenant Dennis Rosenbaum. “They do have guns. We’re hoping people just give up what they have to give up but we’re working that area and we’re trying to end this situation but we want people to be on guard. “

The victims are warning people in the area to be cautious.

“Go in the parking lot, pay the extra three bucks,” Lewis said. “It ain’t worth it. Go with somebody else. I’ll never do it again.”

Police have increased their patrols in the area. If you have any information on the robberies, please call Philadelphia Police.

Speed, Alcohol Likely Play Role in Deadly Crash: Police

Investigators believe speed and alcohol played in a role in a crash where a woman died after her car slammed into a pole and into a ditch after exiting the Roosevelt Boulevard (Route 1) northbound overnight.

The crash at Wissahickon and Roberts avenue in Philadelphia’s Nicetown section around 10:30 p.m. Monday left three people — including a pregnant woman — hurt, said Philadelphia Police.

“When she exited the Roberts Avenue Exit she was driving at a high-rate of speed, lost control during the turn, jumped up on the curb, crashed into a telephone pole — breaking that telephone pole in half — then she went down about a 20-foot embankment,” Philadelphia Police Chief Inspector Scott Small.

Medics pronounced the 23-year-old driver dead at the scene from head trauma, said Small.

Medics rushed the woman’s front seat passenger — a 24-year-old man — to Einstein Medical Center with severe head trauma and a broken arm.

A 24-year-old man and a 24-year-old pregnant woman who were in the back seat were both taken to Temple University Hospital where they were expected to be OK.

After the wreck, the badly-damaged 2013 Ford sedan sat in the ditch with its alarm blaring and lights flashing.

Accident investigators found several bottles of booze in the car, said Small.

“They believe speed and alcohol were contributing factors to the fatal auto accident.”

Crews remained on the scene for hours as they cleared the crash and repaired the utility pole.

Suburban 'Cheer Mom' Accused of Sex With Teen Due in Court

0

A Suburban Philadelphia mom who police say had sex with a teen in a public park is set to appear in court Tuesday to face charges that she sexted and corrupted the 17-year-old soccer player.

The inappropriate relationship was uncovered when an Upper Pottsgrove Police officer allegedly found 42-year-old Iris Gibney and the teen naked, having sex inside a parked car. The car was illegally parked in Hollenbach Park in Pottstown, Pennsylvania, after closing around 10:30 p.m. Nov. 15.

As the officer approached the car, he saw Gibney performing a sex act on the teen, according to an affidavit of probable cause obtained from police.

The 17-year-old Pottsgrove High School student said he met Gibney at a high school football game earlier this year, police said. She had been volunteering as a "cheer mom" for the cheerleading team that her daughter is a part of.

Confronted about the alleged affair, the teen told the officer he couldn't lie and admitted he was having sex with Gibney, according to police records.

Gibney, who works as an associate at Victoria's Secret in King of Prussia, told the officer, "I’ve never been in trouble before. I can't believe I did this. I have three children of my own — I am so, so sorry," according to the arrest report.

Further investigation revealed Gibney and the teen communicated through Twitter and a public chat room. The mother of three then sent the boy several partially nude photos from her cellphone to his, police said.

As part of their investigation, police confiscated the boy's phone and found the sexts from the Pottstown woman, investigators said.

Gibney turned herself in last week to be arraigned on charges including corruption of a minor, dissemination of explicit materials to a minor and trespass by auto.

She posted $50,000 unsecured bail and left custody without making comment as she walked to her car.

She faces a preliminary hearing Tuesday morning, according to court records. The hearing could, however, be continued.

Caught-on-Cam Hotel Robber Strikes Again: Police

0
0

Police in two Pennsylvania counties warned of a robber targeting hotels and motels near Philadelphia International Airport and other area hotels over the past couple of weeks.

The latest possible heist occurred Monday night at the Quality Inn motel along Governor Printz Boulevard in Tinicum Township.

The man’s actions match those of earlier heists — two at that same Delaware County motel just last week (Dec. 21 & Dec. 23).

In surveillance video released from earlier cases, you can see the masked man jumping the counter, grabbing employees at gunpoint and forcing the employees to open the register.

In other heists — happening at different times of day — the suspect, believed to be between 25 to 35 years old, standing around 6-foot-2-inches and weighing around 185 pounds, held up men outside a Philadelphia hotel, tried to get into the back door of another Philly hotel and held up employees at a City Avenue motor lodge before firing at a person who chased him away.

Here is a list of when each heist, or attempted theft, occurred:

Dec. 20 - Extended Stay America on Bartram Avenue in Philadelphia
Dec. 20 - Marriot on Bartram Avenue in Philadelphia
Dec. 21 & Dec. 23 - Microtel on Bartram Avenue in Philadelphia
Dec. 23 - North American Motor Lodge on City Avenue in Philadelphia

During the City Avenue heist, someone walked in during the theft and the man opened fire as the witness gave chase, according to police. Luckily no one was injured.

Police asked that anyone with information on the heists to contact Philadelphia Police.
