Motorists are getting a holiday gift at the pumps in New Jersey.

AAA Mid-Atlantic says the average price of a gallon of regular gas in the state on Friday was $2.43. That's down another 12 cents from last week, when prices were down 10 cents from the week before.

Motorists were paying $3.28 a year ago and this marks the 14th straight week that gas prices have fallen in New Jersey.

The national average price on Friday was $2.45, down 15 cents from last week and down from $3.21 from last year.

AAA spokeswoman Tracy Noble says that this is the lowest Americans are paying at the pump since 2009.

Prices are expected to remain relatively low into 2015, barring any unexpected spikes in global prices or declines in domestic production.

A lighting ceremony was held Saturday for the infamous “Charlie Brown” Christmas tree in Reading, Pennsylvania.

The 50-foot spruce tree was lit during a rededication ceremony in Penn Square around 5:30 p.m. Mayor Vaughn D. Spencer, City Council President Francis G. Acosta and Reading residents attended the ceremony.

The city was at the center of controversy in November after many residents called it “ugly” and even compared it to the sad-looking tree in “A Charlie Brown Christmas.” Acosta initially led a group of citizens interested in having the spruce replaced by a fuller tree.

Acosta later changed his mind however and instead decided to have residents redecorate the tree.
Another tree, which was meant to serve as the replacement, instead went up in Reading’s City Park.

After Saturday’s rededication ceremony, several public showings of “A Charlie Brown Christmas” were held at a nearby movie theater.

Mayor, Philly Police Speak on NYC Officer Deaths

The fatal shootings of two New York Police Department officers prompted reactions from officials nationwide, including some from our area. On Saturday a gunman shot and killed two NYPD officers sitting in their squad car in Brooklyn before running to a nearby subway station and turning the gun on himself, officials said.

A Philadelphia Police spokeswoman called the shootings a “horrible act of terror.”

"Intentionally murdering a police officer is not the way to solve anything," she said in a statement to NBC10. "In fact it destroyed the lives of two families (those of these officers) that had absolutely nothing to do with the events taking place across this country. Our thoughts and prayers are with New York Police Department and the families of these officers. All of us in this country must really take a look at ourselves and our actions and get this right, because the loss of human lives surely isn't the answer."

Philadelphia Mayor Michael Nutter took to Twitter to address the shooting.

Officials with the Gloucester Township Police Department also announced their support for the NYPD.

“The men and women of the Gloucester Township Police Department stand in solidarity with our brother and sisters of the New York City Police Department and mourn the loss of their two assassinated officers,” they wrote in a released statement. “By the order of Chief Harry Earle, all Gloucester Township Police Officers shall be wearing mourning bands over their badges for 7 days.  Please keep the murdered Officers, their families, the NYPD, and all law enforcement your thoughts and prayers.”

The deadly Brooklyn shootings occurred in the wake of nationwide protests against police in relation to the recent grand jury decisions not to indict the officers involved in the deaths of Mike Brown and Eric Garner. The decisions prompted several protests in our area, including one demonstration at the King of Prussia Mall Saturday.

Anti-police graffiti which read, “Cop Lives Don’t Matter” was also discovered earlier this week in West Philadelphia.

Communities Still Spooked by Killing Spree

Nearly a week after a Marine reservist went on a deadly shooting spree in Montgomery County, several communities are working to rebuild a sense of safety while continuing to pull for the  full recovery for the only survivor, Anthony Flick.

"Our hearts are broken, our communities are broken," said Melissa Tarantino, a friend of the six family members killed by Bradley Stone last Monday.

Stone, 35, began his deadly rampage at 3:30 a.m. Dec. 15 when he barged into the home of his ex-wife's sister, Trish Flick, and shot and killer her, her husband Aaron and their 14-year-old daughter, Nina.

Their 17-year-old son, Anthony, who tried to defend his sister during the attack,  He suffered a "gaping skull fracture" and lacerations to his arms and fingers, according to court documents. He remains in stable yet serious condition at Thomas Jefferson University Hospital, officials said.

Along with Anthony's family, Stone killed his ex-wife and the mother of their two children, Nicole Hill Stone, her mother and her grandmother, according to investigators.

A vigil is being held Monday night at Souderton Area High School to draw attention to Anthony's fight and honor the memory of Nina, according to the Flick's Fighters, a group of the teenagers' friends and classmates who organized an online campaign that has already raised more than $25,000 for the orphaned teen.

"We are going to be here for him," said Sarah Sewell, Anthony's friend. "We are his family now because that's all he has left... us."

The 45-minute event will begin at 6:30 p.m. in the school's gymnasium.

Authorities found Stone's body Tuesday in the woods near his Pennsburg home after an intense manhunt that struck fear among his Montgomery County neighbors who were told to shelter in place and led schools to cancel classes.

Authorities have yet to release a motive in the killings, but fellow marines, who served with Stone, described the man as odd and described his relationship with his ex-wife as tumultuous.
