A fire tore through a West Chester home just after midnight Thursday, forcing a family of four to find another place to sleep shortly after they celebrated Thanksgiving.

Crews responded to the blaze on the 1000 block of Carolyn Drive around 12:15 a.m. Friday, officials said.

The smoke and flamed destroyed the house before firefighters were able to get it under control, authorities said.

The American Red Cross of Southeastern Pennsylvania is providing the displaced family with lodging, food, clothing and shoes.

A northeast Ohio teacher whose skull was crushed by a rock dropped onto her vehicle from a Pennsylvania overpass is recovering from her sixth surgery.

The Repository in Canton reports Sharon Budd of Lake Township had surgery about a week before Thanksgiving Day to remove plastic skull pieces that became contaminated.

Her husband says she was walking, talking and in good spirits days later. And she had an extra reason to celebrate on the holiday: It was also her 53rd birthday.

Budd was riding with her husband and daughter when the 4.6-pound rock crashed through the front window and struck her head July 10. She lost her right eye, suffered brain damage and went through rehabilitation at a Danville, Pennsylvania, hospital.

Four teenagers have been charged in the case.

Cowboys' Fan Eats Words; Free Cheesesteaks at S. Philly Shop

The Eagles crushed the Dallas Cowboys on Thanksgiving -- a big win for Birds fans and cheesesteak lovers as the owner of a South Philly steak shop promised to give away free grub if his favorite team -- the Cowboys -- lost Thursday.

Anthony Renzulli, the owner of Atney's Grub, gave away free food from 1 to 3 p.m. Friday. Word of the gratis grub surfaced earlier this week during a sports talk show on 94.1 WYSP.

Located on Oregon Avenue between Broad and 13th streets, Atney's Grub gave the free cheesesteaks to any walk-up customers. The free sandwiches are not available through delivery.

Workers anticipated giving away about 500 free cheesesteaks during the two-hour stint.

As for Atney's owner -- Renzulli remains a Cowboys fan despite the team's Thanksgiving Day whooping.

Student Goes Missing During Night Out in Manayunk

Hundreds of people handed out fliers Black Friday in hopes of finding a Philadelphia area college student who has not been seen since spending the night before Thanksgiving out with friends.

Twenty-one-year-old Shane Montgomery was last seen at Kildare’s Irish Pub on Main Street in Manayunk around 1:45 a.m. Thursday.

The West Chester University senior had spent the night of Thanksgiving Eve -- an evening many friends reunite while home for the holiday -- barhopping with a few friends, said his mother Karen Montgomery.

"He told me he was going to Main Street with a few friends and my nephew," Montgomery said.

Montgomery filed a police report after the Roxborough native didn’t return home. Philadelphia Police considered the disappearance suspicious, but suspected no foul play. The investigation has included the use of K-9s and helicopters.

Montgomery said her son’s friends told her he didn’t appear inebriated when he left the bar. Before Shane left Kildare's, he bumped into the DJ table prompting a bouncer to ask him to leave, she said. The bouncer spotted Shane make a right and head towards Green Lane, Montgomery said.

Friends tried to contact him, but had no luck, she said.

“They tried to text message Shane that they were getting ready to leave,” Montgomery said. “Of course being Shane, it died — he never charges his phone.”

Officers could be seen searching for Shane in Manayunk Friday afternoon. Police also sought surveillance video from local businesses in hopes of retracing Shane’s steps after he left Kildare’s. Some of the video appeared very grainy.

More than 300 people volunteered Friday -- gathering at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church on Rector Street, which Shane's friends and family used as a staging area for the search. After wrapping up the search Friday, Montgomery said they will resume their search at 10 a.m. Saturday.

Shane, who weighs about 140 pounds and stands 5-foot-11-inches tall, was wearing a buttoned- down gray shirt, gray hoodie and jeans when he left the bar. He also has a unique Celtic cross tattoo on his shoulder, according to police.

A $10,000 reward was being offered for reliable information leading to Shane’s safe return. Montgomery asked that anyone who sees him call her at 215-920-2569. Anyone with information is also urged to contact Philadelphia Police Det. Valentino at 215-686-3353/54.

Carjackers Visited 3 Stores in Paramus: Police

A pair of carjackers got away with a brand-new Mercedes in New Jersey after forcing the owner out of his car outside a Paramus store Friday, police say.

Authorities believe it's connected to two earlier attempted carjackings along Route 17, the first of which happened at a Mercedes dealership as an employee was trying to check in a leased car.

Alex Carlo said he was crouched over the front of the vehicle and taking off the plate when he heard the door open.

"The gentleman's right here, sitting down, and I notice it's not the customer I was helping out," he said. "I got into the car, about to put it in park, and as I got out, he was already going that way in the pickup truck."

Police believe the thieves also visited the Jaguar/Land Rover dealership a mile down the street, where employees also spotted a suspicious vehicle in their lot, though nothing came of that.

Later, a 50-year-old man was leaving the PGA Superstore down the road when two men approached and threatened him with a gun, according to Paramus police. He handed over his Mercedes and his cellphone, and the carjackers took off.

Police pursued the driver down the Garden State Parkway, but the vehicle got away. Detectives are working on pulling surveillance video and assembling a description of the suspects.

A parking facility provider said payment systems at two parking garages near popular Philadelphia attractions were hacked to capture credit card information.

Chicago-based SP Plus issued a statement Friday that 17 of their garages around the country were hacked including garages at 1700 Market Street in Center City and the National Constitution Center at 525 Arch Street in Old City.

People who swiped their cards at the Philly garages from Oct. 8 to Oct. 22 are at risk, said the company.

The company said it has fixed the problem and it regrets the inconvenience to its customers. The company said it has taken steps so banks issuing the credit cards can monitor for unauthorized charges. Customers who see suspicious charges should contact the banks issuing their credit cards.

Most of the hacked SP Plus garages are in the Chicago area. SP Plus said a garage in Cleveland and one in Seattle also were affected.

SP Plus said concerned customers can call 1-877-717-0004 to get their questions answered.

An older driver became confused Friday evening and wound up smashing her sport utility vehicle into the front of a Northeast Philadelphia pharmacy.

Philadelphia Police Chief Inspector Joe Sullivan captured the scene of the red SUV smashed into Delaire Pharmacy along State Road in the city’s Torresdale section around 5:30 p.m.

Sullivan said the unidentified driver was in the SUV with her adult son when she became confused, drove up onto the curb and into the front of the pharmacy. The crash sent glass and metal crashing down before the vehicle finally stopped after gong halfway inside the closed store.

No one was inside the store at the time and neither person in the car was hurt, said Sullivan.
